My 71 has drum front brakes... what kind of kit or car can I get to convert it to disk?
Thanks
Bob
My stock '72 has original front disk brakes. It is quite drivable and the stopping sure.
I was actually lookin into the same thing about a day ago for my 71. I got this in an email from the Wilwood sales dept-
"Take a look at kit 140-2129-BD ( drilled rotors ). You will need to change to at least a 15" rim recommended."
again, thats a Wilwood kit. $550 if i'm not mistaken. I think i have seen other kits in summit for a bit cheaper, but the wilwood kit has 4 piston calipers, you can get rilled rotors, and it looks pretty and shiney. Hope this helps.
Disc brakes from newer model Pintos will work, as will Mustang II parts. You'll need the whole spindle, but that should be dirt cheap. If you want, you can get upgraded stuff from various street rod vendors that put larger GM disc brakes and calipers on the Pinto/Mustang II spindles, and it costs way less than that Wilwood stuff.
And stay away from crossdrilled rotors. It does nothing for you except cause more locations for the rotors to crack from. It doesn't help reduce the gassing of pads, as brake pads haven't outgassed since the '60s.
