Hello! New guy here. I was looking for some lower gears for my 1980 hatchback with the 2.3, problem is I not sure what rearend I have. It has bolt in axles, and a rear cover and the spiders all enased in the housing. I'm sure you guys can tell me what it is, but is there any way to find some lower gears for it like 4:11's or so?
Tad
With the bolt in axles, does the "pumpkin" bolt into the front of the housing.....ie no bolts on the back of the axle housing? If there's no bolts on the back of the housing you have an 8", and gear ratios are plentiful. For 8" ratios, check out Jegs or Summit.
By bolt in axles, I meant the axles are held in place by the for bolts out on the end of the tubes. The differential itself comes out the back of the housing. I take it from your explanation that the 8 inch is like a 9 inch where the ring, pinion, spiders and all are on the carrier which comes out the front? Mine all come out cover on the rear, I guess that means a 6 3/4?
You do have the 6 3/4, you're correct in that the 8 inch is like the 9 inch with the carrier dropping out of the front of the housing. An 8 inch out of a Mustang II is a direct bolt in, and depending on your location easy to find. I converted my 8 inch to five lug using Moser axles, the stock Pinto rear brakes, and mid-90's Ford Ranger brake drums.
Where are you located? I have a complete 6 3/4 (unknown ratio) I'll give away, and also have an extra 8 inch housing and 4 lug axles I'll sell for $100. I don't have the ability to ship these, so it would need to be a local pickup. I'm located in Marysville, WA, approx. 50 miles north of Seattle.

Thanks for the info! Unfortunatly I'm in Kansas so it would be quite a haul to get parts from you. Now that I know what I'm looking for, I'll see what I can wrangle up in the scrap yards a little closer to home.
But it's a nice drive this time of year! ;D Glad I could help.
