I'm using a Pinto engine in a sand rail and I'm trying to find out the year and confirm the engine size? Can someone please Help? The Codes on the casting don't match up with any of the standard ford part numbering guides. Here is what is on the engine. 70HM-6015-BA There is also a 12M70 and a big 20. I'm guessing that it's a 2.0 but not sure. Thanks for the help.
12M70 is the date code the engine block was cast. Broken down, 12 is the 12th day,M is the month of December and 70 is 1970. Your block was cast Dec. 12, 1970. It originally is out of a 1971 Pinto and therefore considered a '71. It is a 2.0L made in Germany.
Bipper,
Is a 2.0 engine on a '74 also made in Germany?
Ya Vo!
Pintony,
I take Ya Vo to mean yes?
Is this the engine from the Ford Capri, which was sold here as a Mercury?
Hello oldcarpierre,
Actually the 2.0 was introduced in 1971 as optional engine for the Ford MK3 Cortinafor the european market.
Think back....
On September 11 1970... Yes the Pinto was ofically introduced on 9-11.
Ford had not made a 4 cylinder engine since the Model A.
So really... Ford borrowed the German engines for 3 years while they made the Lima 2.3 which was introduced as an optional engine in 1974
I say ENGINES because the 1.6 was in the Ford MK2 Cortina which was sold here untill the introduction of the Mercury Capri in 71.
Which was a good thing too because the MK3 was an UGLY UGLY car.

9-11, WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooo!
