Title: 73 Pinto leaking in front footwells
Post by: Whoosh on August 06, 2007, 03:44:15 AM
Ive run silicon around windscreen but it hasnt made much diff, tried putting tape over the cowl vents & that slowed it a fair bit but still got in somehow. What is the common problem?, how to fix? & approx how much??

Hello Whoosh,

How rusty is your 1973 Pinto??
Will your 1973 Pinto leak while sitting or only when moving??

I have read on this forum that people have had leak problems with the windshield gasket and body seams.  The leak problem I have had on several Pintos has been with the vent stand pipe located inside the cowl rusting through (usually gets the passenger side floor wet).

Here's where mine leaked. As you may see, I need to add some bondo or silicone to finish the job.

Most likely best addressed from the top but you would have to cut the topside sheetmetal to get to it than weld afterwards.

This on a 72 Runabout that sat for a long time outside next to Long Island Sound.

I had a leak on my 80 Wagon into the Drivers side footwell. My problem was (unfortunately I didn't take any pics before I scrapped the car) the Drain hole in the Cowl was plugged from sitting outside under a Tree and then the Cancer just got worse and worse, it was so bad that if I was driving the car in the rain and had Sandals on, my feet got wet! I didn't realize WHERE it was leaking from until I pulled the dash and wiper motor.  :(
Well the car is it's final resting place R.I.P., it was a great car and learning experience.

thanks guys, my pinto isnt that rusty & is in pretty good nick, it is showing some signs around boot (trunk) lid & doors but generally shes sound. it leaks more on the drivers side & seems worse when sitting rather than moving. Seeing as Pintos are uncommon in New Zealand most people compare them to English or Aussie Cortinas which had the same 'blocked vents causing water traps & cancer' in the same area.
