Title: Heater box cover removal
Post by: www.lovefords.org on May 06, 2004, 02:10:45 PM
I am trying to remove the heater box cover from my '80 Pinto - the core is bad - I got about 9 or 10 clips that were holding the cover in place, but there is still something holding it on the outboard side behind the dash air vent. Is this a clip, a screw....?  Or maybe I have all of the clips off, and I just need advice on how to remove the cover..... down and out, out and down, or both at once?

Thanks
John Rotella

After a couple of very frustrating hours I was able to determine that there is a clip holding the heater box cover that only someone who is double-jointed with 9" toothpick-like fingers can reach. I don't know how it will go back on but since there are 10 other clips it should hold firm.

Removing the heater box cover is quite complicated, requiring the removal of the glove box door and liner, the air duct to the dash and its damper assembly, and if you want to bathe the cover, there is the wiring harness that holds it in place, too.

The core itself is way bigger than I expected!

I removed the whole heater box and it was challenging. I bought an A/C heater box so I can keep the heat and defoggers in my turbo Pinto project. Installing that is going to be a blast.  ;D

awww c'mon Jeff where's your sense of adventure?

I changed out the blower motor on my Pinto after much fighting & cursing of the engineers i got it changed. Then I modified the firewall so I can get the bugger out from the front next time!!!

If you REALLY want fun change the heater core on a '95 taurus! the ENTIRE dash has to come out!!

  GEEZ LOUISE!!!!
I just finished taking out my ac/heater box last night.I had to remove everthing including the bolts on the bottom of the dash dropped the steering column. Finally got it out ;D Im getting rid of the ac so im going to modify the box to make it smaller. The kicker is it was Thought it was plugged"Water going in ,no water coming out" 6 hours later i checked it out with a hose on the inlet still clogged, just to justify my pain and suffering. When i pressurized the outlet it blew out all kinds of junk .If i would have thought about that before i became hell bent on removing it i would saved alot of heart ache as well as what is left of my hair.I hope someone reads this and back flushes the core before assuming that it is clogged.
