does anyone know if anyone has done a rwd import swap in a smog exempt pinto?
Not that I know of. The bigger question is, what are you thinking of? Surely not an RB26DETT (Skyline motor) I'd think the Toyota AE (Corolla GT-S) series would be a good fit.
That being said....The 2.0 Ford motor has TONS of aftermarket support, as does the '86 up 2.3 turbo. You can build the SNOT out of either of these motors & have a package that's just as reliable & makes as much HP as any Japaneese engine.
No need in going to the time/trouble/expense of swapping in a "Jap" motor. when there's a viable, not to mention cheaper alternative.
Any motor can be put into any car, IF you have the cash, paitence, & skill.
One thing that I wondered about is all the work to swap a Volvo DOHC head on a Ford 2.3. Wouldn;t it be easier to just swap the whole engine?
The bottom end on the Volvo 2.3 is not as strong as the turbo Ford variant. Although there is a guy over in Europe that made almost 580hp with a turbocharger & supercharger on the Volvo motor.

This is the neat one, on the engine dyno:

I was thinking the rb26dett as one of my choices or the jdm 2jz twin turbo vvti from the type rz supra. Or a 13b rew or f20c 1gen s2k, or 02 nissan s15 sr20dett red top. I had a pinto back in 00 and it was ok. I preffer dohc over sohc. I have been playing with hondas for a while and the power from a sohc and a dohc are different. And I don't want to drop a v8 or v6 in it cause that is normal. I want to be a odd ball. The only ford motor I would test and look up on that is dohc is the 92 or 93 and up escort gt. It is a 1.8 dohc. I will see. Fabing stuff up is not a issue.
If you're looking into going DOHC You MAY want to look into The Ford ZTEC from the Focus. There's quite a bit of aftermarket for that, & it HAS been used in RWD apps. (IE: midget racers) I'm not too sure the Pinto engine bay will actually hold a straight 6, even a small import 6.
The Rotary option sounds intruiging tho. The 13b block isn't much bigger than a beer keg. Personally I'd look into the current RX-8 motor, 225 hp WITHOUT a turbo. You can likely get 90% of the engine behind the front axle centerline for AWESOME weight balance & handling.
Dadgummit, now you're giving me ideas!!
It would be cool if you could do the all wheel drive. if yo do the import transplant!
Last but certaintly not least you look up the Ford Cosworth DOHC motor to get some more ideas ;)
I think the idea of an import engine in a pinto is twisted. Kinda makes me sick.
:wow: Why even entertain the idea? If you want the power go for the 2.3T. Put a Ford in your Ford.
PLEASE I'm out there to beat em not join em.
I like the idea of odd swaps, I always have. Dabbled a little while with the idea of swapping a GM 60 degree V6 into Laura's Kia Rio, as well as the idea of swapping in a gen1 DSM AWD setup into the extra Mustang II shell I have and having some off road rally fun. I wonder if I can find an AWD Fusion with rollover damage...hmmm... :surprised:
AWD can be had in these chassis without resorting to import stuff. The Aerostar vans had AWD. Granted it was the 2.9V6 and AOD trans. It COULD, with enough time, skill & cash, br swapped into a Pinto, or Stang II. I've thought SERIOUSLY about this very swap. :hypno:
I have looked into a 4G63 DSM swap into a pinto... those engines are wicked.

How about a turbo flat 4 from a subaru?

How about a 3800 Supercharged Series II V6. 90 degree V6 with a 60 degree bellhousing bolt pattern on the FWD models. :D As bad as it may sound and as disgracefull as it is and no matter how much i hate mixing brands, id consider it in maybe a pinto wagon for a toy. Something new and fun to try. The camaro and firebird version are RWD so it wouldnt be a problem. I like ford over GM, but that 3.8 GM is one of my all-time favorite engines.

I doubt the flat 4 would fit between the rails. Beyond that the Subies put the WHOLE engine ahead of the front axle. There just isn't room for that in the Pinto's engine bay.
Personally if a Subie swap was feasible, I'd go with an EG33 6cyl. 230Hp 245ft/lb torque!!
not that anyone cares but i have been playing around with a 2.3 ford turbo into an opel gt..it is at least sort of american
