Title: Fuel Level Sensor for '73
Post by: TheMayor73 on July 31, 2007, 08:40:50 AM
Hi Folks,

I recently got a '73 2L Automatic with 26K mi.  The fuel gauge doesn't register, and as it turns out, it's the level sensor.  The part that keeps popping up online is this one: SPLITFIRE FUEL LEVEL SENDING UNIT -- For Use With Splitfire Fuel Gauge Part # 25816A.  My question is, will this only work with that gauge, or is there something else I can use that will work with the gauge that's there?

Thanks!

From what I understand, the 71-73 Mustang sending unit is the same as the Pinto one.  I DO NOT KNOW THIS AS A FACT.  If you get one, check it visually to the Pinto one.  All older (pre-digital) Ford sending units should have the same resistance levels.

Hello TheMayor73,
Most likely a bad float.
The Pinto fuel sending unit has a BRASS float and they go bad and leak and subquently sink to to botom of the tank.
NOW read closely!!!!
Sit inside your Pinto and stare directly at the fuel guage needle.
turn the key forward to the run position..NOT START!!!!
See if it will move just a bit.
If so? It is the float.
Most early Pintos also have a plug in the rear cargo pannel.
I am positive 1971 and 72 do, it is hit and miss on the 73 as there was a changeover in the harness in 73.
If the needle does not move at all check this first B4 buying a new sender.
Hope this helps...
