Post by: mattch on July 25, 2007, 09:40:29 AM
I have 77 hatchback pinto and the dang thing died yesterday driving about 55. I heard a LOUD POP! and lost power. Oil leaked slowly out and i could see a trail leading to where i pulled over. ALL POWER WAS LOST. battery dead and wouldnt even try to turn over..

Anyone have any ideas?  All input is greatly apprecaited.

Sorry to give you the bad news but from what you described it sounds like you threw a rod! Look on both sides of the block and also at the oil pan for a hole or large crack. If oil came out that bad there's a hole somewhere! If so time for another bottom end! Sorry. >:(

Mattch,
Well, I hope you are going to fix that Pinto.

well yesterday we went out and found that a wire running out of the solenoid disconnected and touched the hood or something else metal (hence the noise and loss of power) the battery actually even still works. We even put a new ignition coil in for good measure.
Now it will crank, but still wont start. No spark.

any ideas?

Oh I forgot to say that there was still oil in the motor yesterday when we checked.  So not all the oil leaked out...there was still enough oil to register on the stick.

Mattch,
I thought you said there was a trail of oil when you pulled on to the burm. Of course a POP does not go along with a rod cap seperation that would be a KA-BOOM. If you car is a 77 then it is an electronic ignition which means you fried the distributor as well as the coil. That would sound like a muffled BI-ZZZITTT but you wouldn't hear that because of the POP which you are lucky you herd with that 2500 lb. radio playing. Get some new guts for your distributor. And while you are at the parts store get a new main seal.
