I figured that I should post some pictures of my project. It was going to be a race car by somebody else but I just couldn't considering the shape of the car and all the new parts.
New parts: radiator, rack & pinion, front brakes, fully blueprinted motor, clutch, tires & rims, traction bars and Mustang II 8" rear. Has a 6 point roll bar with swing out door bars along with weld in frame connectors. Makes you feel a bit more safe.
This car was an arizonia car and has only surface rust from the few years in Illinois. Interesting enough the car was found 4 miles from my house. Outside it is yellow and inside it is avacodo green. :lost: That will be changed to gray/black with the outside done in white.
This is the plan.
first is to get it running needs exhaust, battery and some wiring work.
second is to get all systems operational. This is an A/C car and it has everything from the firewall back.
third is EFI most probably MS.
fourth is a 5 spd and 4:10 gears that came with the car [in a box new].
fifth is a turbo. Have holset on the shelf.
All this will be done as time and money allow, mostly the last....
Thanks to some people here for their help already. Bill, 77turbopinto and Mike, map351.

Just added another set of pictures to post. It takes forever when you don't have the proper tools. Oh well at least I am doing it and that is all that matters... : )

Here is another installment. I have finished the fabrication and got the WB bung and the stub pipe welded up to my fabricated flange. All that is let is some finishing and then painting.
If you follow the series it will show you pretty much what it takes to mount up the ranger header. Some work but worth it.
I would be remiss if I didn't make mention of Bill [77turbopinto]. It was his FAQ on the header that got me going on it. The only difference is mine came out at 2.50 " pipe instead of 2.25". Didn't plan it that way just did.
I am not going to install it until I get the wiring done as leaving the header off will allow access to the starter and solinoid which I will rewire.

These will come after the pictures in the post above to give the whole series of what it took.

And this is how I spemt my holiday weekend. My battery is behind the passenger seat and I wanted to run the power and ground cables forward but without making new holes in the body. From the pictures you can see I found some factory holes behind the front kick panel. I had to take off the front fender to do this but I got it done. All the cabeling is now new.
Next is continue to run it to the back, locate it and do the rear battery mounting deal.
Here is the link for some pictures:
http://s93.photobucket.com/albums/l66/hellfirejim/battery%20wiring%201/
Slow but sure. My goal is to get it running before the end of summer.... Oh yeah that was this weekend........oops. :surprised:
jim
Today is a good day. This weekend I finished the engine compartment part of the new battery wiring, cleaned and treated the rust, made another bracket [this one actually works], primered the inner fender panel and remounted the fender. ;D
I had planned to buy a new battery for it but the other car had to get a new water pump and alternator. : (
So my next step is to un-engineer all the "neat" things that was done in the engine compartment. Such as other wiring, vacum hoses, heater hoses and all the little stuff. Oh yeah I almost forgot, since the wiring is done I will finish off the header and get it installed permentantly.
Here are some pictures of the wiring job. Hope this isn't too boring just being able to share with other pinto people is really cool.
thanks
jim

Well I managed to get some more work done. I started with the exhaust. The stub pipe I had was ok but it wasn't right. So I had a 12" section of 2 1/2 pipe bent to about 20 degrees. I thne shortened it to fit. Not rewelded yet and when it gets welded I will post a picture.
The other work was trying to correct previous work. There were a couple of toggle switches just hanging up by the tach. They were for the electric fan and the electric fuel pump. Neither had a relay. Since I also have a line lock installed I needed a place to mount all three switches and relays.
I got the 20 amp switches from radio shack for about $5.00 each but they only had two. Will get the other next week. So I made this panel to go where the ashtray was. I don't smoke so no big deal. I have one 30amp relay and will need one more. The line lock won't need one.
Actually this is the second one. The curved panel made me mess up the bottom bolt holes.
BTW: Anybody need an ashtray and the mounting frame???
jim

Here is your next report on the wiring rework. First off i must say i hate yellow wire as that is the color of the wire this person used for everything.... :surprised:
Anyway the pictures show the lit toggle safety switches, the two relays and the fuse panel to power the toggle switches. The fuse panel will be velcrowed to the heater box. Except for the final switch it turned out not too bad and it is all hidden.
jim
More pictures: http://s93.photobucket.com/albums/l66/hellfirejim/Inside%20Wiring%202/
Hey Jim, that Fuse Block an location look very familiar for me!!!!!
If I may say though, all of the wiring for the relays and switches being the same color could get confusing down the road when or if you need to make "Improvemnts".
turbowagonman
It doesn't show up real well but there is specific colors for certain circuits.... I think the beauty in this is that I can carry a spare switch, relay and fuses and have it covered for less than $15. A lot of os slow work but in the end very satisfying.
jim
Just a small update. I finished the heater hoses and the engine compartment is starting to look a lot better or at least one side of it.
I have some vacum lines questions but I will post in the question section.
Gettiing closer all the time. Should fire up in the next couple of weeks.... I hope
jim
(http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l66/hellfirejim/update/set11-23-06035.jpg)
Another update
I finished the dash wiring and got it all tucked up out of site which also includes the tach and wiring.
I finished the vacuum lines and the breather hose from my new breather upto a foam filter inside the air cleaner. So I am down to Spark plugs and battery. I just have to wait until my budget catches up. :surprised:
I made a pact with myself when I started this that I would do any repairs or modifications the "right" way so i would only do it once. Takes more time and money but worth it. Getting closer.

Just a short update. The battery I was supposed to get got lifted by some kid so I use the battery Pak type jump starter to test the circuits. Everything works ok except the starter which drags sometimes and cranks fine sometimes so it is coming out. What I would like to know is who would design a car where you had to disassemble the front half of the car just to get the starter out?
Did I mention stupid?????

be carefull using a jumpbox. Some boxes have up to 18v and 1600CCA. we have cooked a few thing around work using the jump box for test.
Thanks for the heads up. I only used it to flick on a few switches to see if it all worked and they did...After I fixed a few.... :amazed:
Still have to finish pulling off that starter.... : (
just a short update. The "missing" battery found it's way home yesterday and i got my 3 pod from Map351 yesterday and I love it. Raining so no work on the car...
jim
It has been a while since I posted. I am almost done with the battery box install. Got the new cover made and I have to finish mounting the box and vent to the floor as it is a totally sealed unit.
I also sent the starter out to get rebuilt. I still need to do a do small things like move the power wire for the switches to a switched 12v sorce but I am damn close to firing it up.
As soon as doc's give me clearnce I will be back at until it gets to cold or it snows. [open air garage]
jim
Don't feel bad Jim, I've got an "Open Air Garage Also", and it Snows here in Ohio!!!
turbowagonman
Well good new today. I got the starter back from my local shop. They put in a new armatuer with new bushings and bearings and stuff. They also upgraded the brush holder and brushes. The put in a bolt in stainless steel holder for the brushes that allows a new style of brush and all for $55. ; )
Now if the doc oks it I can get it re-installed this weeked.... I hope.
jim
It's is alive!
After all the issues and problems I got the starter in, spun it for oil pressure, re-connected everything and fired it up. Damn what a great feeling.... Even better this means that this winter on some weekends when my buddy has an open bay in his shop I can move the car up there to work on it.
It is a good day to be alive.
jim
Congradulations Jim
Yes, Congrats!
Nothing like that feeling.....
Bill
i forgot to add my buddy up the street with the shop has already started with improvments now that it runs. We are going to add bigger wire for the fuel pump and electric fans with fuses at the power source to protect the rest of the wiring.
We are also going to wire in a fuel pump cut off based on oil pressure. No oil pressure no electric fuel pump. good safety feature.
Just thought I had better post it before I forgot. : )
jim
Congratulations Jim! Considering the health issues you have had to deal with and the outside, open air garage you have come a long way. I'm really happy for you. Now, GET BACK TO WORK! :drunk:
Time for another update. First I got the slow leak in the right front tire taken care off so i can move it this winter....
I also completed the battery box. It is not finished as the holddown and the top are in primer and this spring I may just redo them but for now it is sealed and works just fine.
Here are the pictures.
http://s93.photobucket.com/albums/l66/hellfirejim/battery%20box/
jim
Well reality rears it's ugly head. My plan was to move the Pinto to a shop at times to work on it but I have found that due to my last health issue the cold weather is hitting really hard. So I am going to leave it up on jackstands and car cover for the winter. If it can't be inside then this is probably the next best thing.
HOWEVER, work is not stopping. My carb i bought has arrived and i found the manifold that came with the car. It is an old Offy 4 brl carb manifold. I will get all this together this winter and this spring i will pull off the old carb and manifold. and mount the new one. Oh I almost forgot, there will a total enclosure around the carb because down the road it will be turbo charged. :surprised: BTW: The enclosure will be of 1/4 polycarbonate or lexan....
These are the new pictures. http://s93.photobucket.com/albums/l66/hellfirejim/carb%20and%20manifold/
jim
Just a quick note that I am sending my carb out to be prepared for blowthrough. An old friend of mine is doing it. Won't be much work as this blowthrough will be a total enclosure that I am building.
jim
Small update but I am moving on it. I got the air horn done and is ready for installation. I will post a link for the pictures but first I need to remind people that the tube part goes toward the outside and the bell will be facing inward. Why? Because that way it will act like a diffuser and not cause issues with the carb.
http://s93.photobucket.com/albums/l66/hellfirejim/inlet%20tube/
Sometimes the best layed plans........ I was going to use a polycarbonate [lexan] to make the box and it would have held the pressure ok but I forgot that it was not resistant to gasoline. Around the top of the carb is always a fog of gas and the fumes and such would have eaten it. :embarassed: :rolleye: Oh well it will now be made of aluminum.
I got another accellerator cable, thanks tigger, and as soon as the carb gets back from getting modified I can start the actual layout of the box.
More later as it happens.
jim
Todays post has nothing to do with My Pinto but to say that I am totally blown away that there are over 1000 views of my project. :hypno:
Hopefully it has provided some help or inspiration or direction on how not to do it or at least some entertainment... ;D
I am just going to keep plugging along and doing what I can.
later
jim
For those that question on why all the work has stopped on my Pinto, I would like to present a picture of my Garage.
jim
(http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l66/hellfirejim/12-15-07%20snow/Snow12-15-07.jpg)
Hello world!!!
It gives me great pleasure to announce that I am back to work on my Pinto stuff. Last night my carb came in the mail. It was my christmas present to myself. It is a 450CFM 4brl holley Modified for blow thru.
Here is a single picture:
There are more here:
http://s93.photobucket.com/albums/l66/hellfirejim/Blow%20through%20carb/
So now I can start the mods on my intake manifold and then start making my enclosure box for the turbo. That should work out fine for me as I only plan to run about 10lbs or so of boost.
In case you have forgotten this is the manifold I will be starting with:
So with any luck I can get some work done and start posting again. Ahhh life is good.
jim
I have started the modification of the intake manifold. To make the throttle linkage work I have to mount the carb "backwards". This will have the primaries over the secondary part of the manifold and the secondaries over the primaries. This really shouldn't make a difference in the flow. I am opening up the plenium on the secondary side of the manifold because when I am in the secondaries most likely the turbo will be in boost. As a side note, no mill here just hand tools. Slow and steady but then again I have at least two months before i can even begin to think about working on the car.
I am starting to have concerns about clearance about the "box" and the cylinder head. Might get interesting.
jim

Due to a about a foot od snow outside, I am posting something different but really important down the road. My income check came in and I bought a air compressor. Basically it is 110volt unit that pumps 6.6cfm at 90 psi.
http://s93.photobucket.com/albums/l66/hellfirejim/Air%20compressor/
jim
Well the sun will be shining and it is supposed to get up to the mid 60s this weekend. I plant to start the dig out and get back and start working. It has been waaay to long. Hopefully I will have some more pictures to post.
jim
Well I actually have something to post. I pulled the radio and opened up the plastic panel. I then made an aluminum front plate to house two mechanical gauges. Water and oil. The pictures show the panel and fasteners. I will paint the panel black before it gets bolted back in the car. When that is done I will take a picture if anybody is interested or I might just post it anyway. : )

Looks good, glad to see your back at it again, it has been a long winter! I know I am sooo ready to get back to working on my cars
Oh Yeah, I was slowly loosing it. Rain on Sat but sunny and 65 Sunday so you know where I will be.
jim
Something worth posting about. I now have the dash panel and the 3 pod all pre-assembled and ready for install tomorrow.
The dash panel first.
And now the 3 pod from Mike.
and
(http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l66/hellfirejim/gauges/3pod001.jpg)
The top hole is empty awaiting the A/F gauge. Then it is a voltmeter and a boost/vacumm gauge. Yeah i know it is a silver ring but I will take care of that later. First i need to get it up and running. I will do that when i start on the interior.
The only part that bothers me is drilling two blind holes to mount the A pillar pod. I guess i should have mounted it empty first and then put the gauges in it. DUH!!!! Oh well might just do that anyway.
I will post the finished deal when i am done. Next is the rest of the engine compartment on the drivers side.
jim
Well I got the dash and 3 pod installed. They are not wired up yet as that will come when I have better access in the engine compartment. Here is a picture.
and
(http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l66/hellfirejim/gauges/gauges001.jpg)
And since I was on a roll I also installed the oil breather tank. I just have to add a hose barb and then run the hoses.
Good weekend, 73 degrees.
jim
Morning all. Well it was a good Sunday as I got to work on the car for about 4 hours and made some real progress and all of it was in the engine compartment.
I took off the carb and intake manifold. That was interesting when you get to the bottom 2 inner bolts..... :amazed: I cleaned up the left front inner panel and relocated the voltage regulator. Yeah I know but I will get an internal reg alt later when I have money. Next started to clean up the wiring and got my brackets painted to mount the new coil hopefully next weekend. As you all know this just take time but it does feel good to be out there working and getting it done. Oh, did I mention I feel old???? Not used to leaning over a fender for about 4 hours.... But it is a good hurt.
jim

I have made some more small steps.
This picture shows the voltage regulator up front. This will be gone when I get an internal Alt. It also shows the Accel coil mounted and the fuel reg with a pressure gauge next to it. The fuel comes in the bottom and then over to the carb.
This is a better picture of the air breather tank.
Still have a ways to go to sort it all out. Wires and stuff everywhere.. : )
jim
To all of you who have been following the project [ over 2000+ views :surprised:] thank you. This is just to let you know that the project is coming to a halt or barely moving as the cancer is back and I am going to be busy for a while.
Not to worry as I will be back at it as soon as I can....
jim
Sorry to hear that, but hang in there man! You have been doing an awesome job with the car, and if you apply that kind of determination to everything in life, you will be back on your feet in no time! Take care, and keep us updated on how things are going, both with you and the car, as I am sure you will be in lots of peoples thoughts.
Get well soon!
Our thoughts and prayers are with you fellow Pinto lover! :)
Thanks for the kind words.
It was so perfect outside roday that I had to go work on the car. I installed the oil and water sending units through the firewall.
In the oil sending unit the top plug will be for the oil pressure cut off for my electric fuel pump.
Not a lot of work as i had to stop and rest a lot but it is one less thing to do.
jim
Amazing enough I actually got to go outside and work somemore on the Pinto.

Just one more thing done.
jim
This is more of a heads up from my experience. I had a sunpro mechanical oil pressure gauge and i decided that if that feed line for the car was coming inside I did not want plastic or copper. I found a braided hose at a decent price. I went to connect it to the gauge after running it through the firewall and found it would not fit the gauge. It seems that gauge only had compression threads on it and there was no adapter available. So I bit the bullet and bought a VDO gauge.
On another board I read of a number of people that have had problems with this sunpro gauge leaking or filling up with oil, I was spared on shear blind luck which is ok and appreciated. The real deal here is don't short cut on things like gauges and such as it will come back and bite you in the butt.
jim
Hey Jim, thanks for the heads up, and glad to see you are up and around fiddling with the car!
I am down to finish wiring the gauges for dash light power. [see question in help section] That plus a ground and the gauge part is done. Then I get to the fun stuff, the intake. I get to finish modifying it and get it installed.
jim
Well I have finished the wiring on the car and i thought I would be happier... This Scot K death thing has hit me pretty hard. As a racer I understand why he does it but if you have never raced at that level, you simply cannot comprehend the height of the dangers involved.... Only by the grace of God have there only been a few. :'(
maybe some pictures if anybody wants to see the finished work.
jim
today, sat, is a good news day. I was out working on the car and just came in before a big storm hit...
First thing I did was clean up the mess and tools from all the wiring work. What a mess. Then I painted my new claipers and NO I didn't pain them red.... :nocool:
i finished porting the intake manifold and took it over to my buddies to bead blast it. Came out a funky aluminum color but with faint blue stripes. hard to describe, I will get pictures tomorrow. Speaking of tomorrow i start with an oil and filter change and then I actually start puting things back together. It is posible that by the July 4th weekend this may be running.... we shall see. it would be really cool to have this running before the surgury....
jim
Yesterday was a good day. Between dodging rain showers I managed to first get the oil and filter changed. That oil filter sure is easy to get at with no intake manifold. :amazed:
Most importantly I got the intake manifold installed and plumbed. Here is a picture:
I am hoping that with the three day weekend coming up I can get it running....
I also wanted to express my amazment that almost 2700 views of my project, I am humbled.
jim
Glad to see you hanging in there and getting some progress. I hope you can make a full recovery. Best wishes...
-beegle55
Today is an important day. Today it is alive for real!!!!! This is with the new coil and new intake manifold and new carb. i fired it today and my, my, my..... It was responsive. In the sense of fairness it does have a few issues but I can fix that. it idled clean and responded very well.
There is a whole lot to the story so it will take a number post to fit it all in...
Here is a teaser.
PS: I know the carb looks huge but it is only 450cfm and is progressive.
jim
Today is a very good day. The Pinto came down off the jack stands and i drove it. Not real far as straight pipes and draggging rear brakes discourage this. neverthe less it was great and a good payoff for the two years i have been working on this.
Here are the "beauty' shots. http://s93.photobucket.com/albums/l66/hellfirejim/Running%20Free/
jim
Almost 2900 reads...!! Your perserverance is a testament to the dedication of Pinto enthusiasts everywhere. Great job - can't wait to see the turbo version!
Thanks for the good words and i am truly humbled by 2900 reads of my little car.... ;D
I am going to try and explain what i did to get the carb, manifold and linkage to all work together. if it gets too long I will stop and I will do another post.
Ok first is the manifold. stock it is an offy 360 that I have modifed the plenium area. Next is the holley carb and it is a 450cfm that was gone through by a friend Walt Bainey out of Ohio and he did an excellent job. I ended up using a stock accel cable holder but modified. That word seems to come up a lot.
The carb is mounted backwords so the linkage is facing the fire wall. The linkage post is at the bottom of the linkage and yes it does open all the way.
Mounting the accel cable holder i first had to make a plate to move the holder to the right about 1 1/2" just used a flat plate. I also used button head bolts to hold the plate to the manifold for clearance. With the cable popped on that carb I set the cable holder down and realized the angle was way off. So i did the first thing that came to mind and grabed the whizzer and made two cuts so I could bend the piece flatter to improve the angle. Don't know what angle it ended up at but it works. I took the piece over to the guy who does my welding and he cut two fill pieces and tigged it for $7. i gave him $10.
looks to be agood place to split the post. be back in a minute. here are the pictures to compare to what I have written.
http://s93.photobucket.com/albums/l66/hellfirejim/Its%20ALIVE/
Part 2:
I then placed the carb on on the manifold and realized that I need to get 1/2 " of height to make it all work. So I first went and got longer carb studs. Then i went looking for a 1/2" carb spacer. Nope ain't going o happen so i then remembered the guy i bought the Pinto from had a shelf full of ..stuff. Iswung by there and got a free 2" spacer that he didn't need. Well lo and behold each end had a 1/2" flat plate cast to a 1" spacer to get 2". I simply cut off the plate and with the longer studes bolted it in.
It is an open spacer and i really need a 4 hole 1/2" spacer to make it right. Anyway i fired it up and happy days. it ran but wasn't "right". Sunday i raised the fuel pressure from 4 to 6 lbs. i then took it down off the jackstand after 2 years and set it on the ground. I hit the key and it fired like it was fuel injection. I ended up driving it for a 2 block trip but straight pipes and dragging rear brakes created an issue. I did learn something though and that is i am fooling myself to think I can manually operate a switch for an electric fan. i am going to get a temp controller unit.
So that's about it for now. if you have any questions please ask.
jim
I am going to try this again. the last time the site just freaked out on me.
Been busy today. I am mounting my master cutoff switch to the side of the battery
box so only the switch handle will be visable. When i turn off the car i can reach
back and flip the switch to isolate the battery from the car.
Since the battery box is plastic i felt it neccessary to make up mounting plates
both inside and out to support the mass of the switch. It is amazing that small
parts such as these take as much time as the big parts. I had to design the shape
of the plates, then drill a hole where i think the switch will poke through. I put
a punch through the hole to keep the two plates centered and one at a time drilled
the connecting mounting bolt hole in each of the 4 corners. The challenge was to
keep it all aligned. After opening up the center hole to allow the switch to pokethrough
I then clamped onto the battery box and started the drilling and mounting of the
plate all over again. Because the box was not a flat piece i also had to make spacers
to keep the mounting plates flate. With the mounting plates secure I then cut out
the hole in the center using the plates as a guide. Did I mention I LOVE uni-bits??????
So now we are to the point in the pictures. The outer plate is painted black and
the plate where the cables go into the box is also painted black.... now that I
am thinking about it I might just paint the outside of the switch and handle black
as to maintain the stealth look. No wonder I am tired. I also made multiple
trips to the hardware store to gets the necessary bolts. why is it that you might
have the bolt but it is the wrong length?????
Tomorrow, I am going to finish the install of the switch and the cable entry plate.
Wire it all up and see if it works. Depending on what happens and how long it
will take I might startup on mounting the muffler.
Brakes get done next week if the wiring goes well. The goal is to get it on the
street drivable before surgury. Now that would be good medicene.

I am going to post twice tonight. This one and one more.
this post is about finishing the batttery box w/cutoff switch. The pictures tell apretty good story. i just simply finished the wiring and closed it up. It works just fine.
When you look at the pictures of the battery box remember that the only stock part is the lower plastic bottom. Everything else in the picture is custom made in my shop.
I will post two pictures and the links for two more if you are interested.

Now on to the second post................
jim
This second post is going to be a little different. There have been over 3000 views of my project over the last couple of years. The people viewing may think that I have a big garage and a machine shop to get all this done. Well here is a picture of my garage:
and here are a couple of pictures of my machine shop:

and
(http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l66/hellfirejim/garage%20and%20shop/shop07-13009.jpg)
The point of this is NOT sympathy for me but to point out that you don't need all the fancy stuff to get your Pinto the way you want it. People just starting out and people who are burned out on their projects take heart, it can be done. It just takes creative thinking and determination. Take your projects and break them down into singular projects and tackle one at a time and before you know it it is where you want it to be, I still have two more steps before my Pinto is drivable, exhaust and brakes. But i couldn't be happer with the results because I built it my way and the best that I can do with what I have to work with. I am very glad I have the car as it helps keep me sane of course if you own a Pinto that part is questioned anyway.
So keep on working on your project and soon enough it will get done.
jim
It was a pretty good weekend as i got some stuff done between the rain showers. The first is the phenolic spacer. If you remember I had an open 1/2 spacer which was ok but not what i really needed. So i got the 4 hole spacer and modified it to work.. there's that word again.... :read:
The next thing I did was install a Hurst t-handle with a button for the line lock and wired it in. To work it requires you to manually flip the toggle switch and then press the button. the toggle switch is to protect me from myself... One shot is of the shifter itself and the other is how it fits in the interior. personally I like it which is good because it is my car.

and
(http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l66/hellfirejim/hurst%20shifter/Thandle07-20002.jpg)
So what's next??? Well if things go right I will get the brakes done during the week, I hope and then next weekend I plan on making the carb air cleaner. I will also tell you about the fuel pressure gauge.
jim
I have not gotten the brakes done yet as it appears it is just one of those things that will get done when it gets done. Something more important and something I want to pass along.
Do NOT use regular teflon tape when taping fuel connetions. Gas will eventually eat the teflon tape. The is a special pink color teflon tape that is specifically for gas lines and such.
Got a good start on the air cleaner but don't expect much as this is just temporary until I get the fuel injection installed.
jim
Well Jim, I gotta say, this is the first time I have read through your thread in entirety. Impressive! Certainly you are an ambitious man, and congratulations on all you have done. You have taught me several things:
1) Perseverance is a good thing
2) (I need to) quit complaining about not having a work space and just DO it
3) (I need to) remember that I too am blessed every day.
Thanks for your insights, thoughts and prayers with you.
Chris
My goal of doing this was to share what I have learned and show it can be done without fancy stuff. I have spent my whole life doing things this way so naturally i just jumped in and did it.
Chris, if I haven't missed it start your own project thread. It keeps me going to do something even very small each weekend that I can.
I am honored by how many views there are on this little project pinto... I hope people can learn at least one thing from it.
jim
Jim:
I have had a few threads started, most of mine is under the title "Rust loves to hide" in the general section. I suppose like the rest of you I need to move my project to a thread here.
HEY - where did you get the battery box? Is it all self-fabricated? Are there "kits" available for doing this (relocating the battery)? I would like to do the same.
Chris
chris:
Go ahead and start your own project thread. you will be glad you did so. Beside it will give me an opportunity to check out your progress.
I don't remember what type of Pinto you have but it does cause you to be careful on the kit that you buy. If it is a sedan then a batterry kit from Summit or Jegs will probably work. Make sure it is totally sealed and has a vent to the out side. Or is at least adaptable to do so as you have to vent it outside the box and trunk area.
If it is a fast back and you want to go to the track then you have to isolate it from the pass compartment by some sheet metal, However if you are like me and I figure i probably wont ever make it to thetrack then put it where ever you want.
To answer your question the only part of mine that is commercially available is the box, all else is custom made.
jim
HI Jim:
Sorry, should have said my car is a wagon (1976 model). If you can make a suggestion, please do.

Hello hellfirejim,
I must admit that I have never looked at this thread???
Not sure why???
The Shur'tug'al thing totally threw me off!!!!
Now that I have looked, I'll go back to the beginning and read all the posts...
I give you a 1-UP for your effort and for your garage post about "NOT GIVING UP" on your project.
From Pintony
Welcome to the thread. Shur'tug'al is a word from an ancient language that means Dragon Rider. This is in reference to my adding turbos to the mix when I get the car to where I want it.
I am truley amazed at all the views of my little car. I am so far from where I want to be with it but at the same time I have come a really long way so for that I am greatful. If life would stop getting in the way I would be further along... Oh well ;D

Jim:
NO track for me....
1) I have never raced
2) I don't want to build a racer
3) I'm chicken ;)
No, seriously, building as a driver, nothing overly powered or modified, just a nice, clean example with tasteful mods.
Chris
Chris,
This is what i would do if I was in your place. A totally sealed and vented metal battery box. I would put it in the right rear corner in the back. I have added a main shut off switch on mine but it doesn't appear to have room in this box. If you want to go in that direction let me know and we can talk about it.
You can buy them cheaper but not better. This is no place to scrimp.

This is how i spent my weekend. Since i was not in a position to do any mechanical work on it I decided to clean up the engine compartment. I have always hated the chrome valve cleaner.
and
(http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l66/hellfirejim/engine%20compartment/Enginecompartment08-03-08003.jpg)
yeah i know the air cleaner lid is too big, what I need is a 6 " air cleaner top. Anybody got one?????????????????????
Tonight there will be two posts. The first post will deal with a goodbye to the engine compartment. I have decided that since the plan for next year is to move to EFI, I am going to accept the engine compatment as is and finished for now. Here are a final couple of pictures.
and
(http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l66/hellfirejim/engine%20compartment/Enginecompartment08-09-08007.jpg)
And that is it for the engine compartment.
This second post is the start of working on the interior. Since life is getting in the way of the brakes and exhaust, what I can do is start the work on the interior. I cleaned out the car and brushed down all the surface rust. Since this was an Arizona car there is no rot to deal with. I first applied a chemical that stops the rust. I covered that with a sealer and then some primer. Here is a couple of pictures:
The first picture is what I started with....
The second is what I ended up with. Notice that the trim panel is gone. The Arizona sun ate them up and they were turning to dust. Sooo i will be needing a set.. anybody got any???
There are more pictures but I will just leave a link if you are interested.

Well another busy weekend. This weekends project was to paint the floor and rollbar. I first pulled the seats out and found a few surprises. I cleaned out the rust and chemically treated it. I then sealed it and primed it.
The painting was done with one [actually three] of those sponge brushes. They were neccessary because of all the cracks and creavases...... The paint i used was tractor paint which is a heavy duty enamal to which I added a shot of hardener. The color was black. The first picture is the before,
(http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l66/hellfirejim/Painted%20Interior/PaintedInterior08-16-17-08003.jpg)
And the second picture was the after.
The entire picture series is available here. http://s93.photobucket.com/albums/l66/hellfirejim/Painted%20Interior/
A lot of work to be covered up by insulation and carpeting.....oh well you gotta do it right.
All this was not without some cost. Saturday night my body was pissed off and Sunday night it wouldn't even talk to me. It appears that I forgot that this old body simply doesn't turn like it used to........... :surprised:
jim
Keep the pics coming, Jim, I enjoy seeing the progress. I know the pain of disintegrated panels - my wagons rear panels sat in Texas sun for years, and are now crumbling quite a bit. You are doing some great things, though, nice work to date!
Enjoying your progress....as per your post a few weeks back, I'm sure you noticed I started my own project thread. Have fun!!
Chris
Glad to see you making some headway Jim. I takes a lot of time and dedication when you are a one man show. Keep it up and it will be on the road before you know it.
Thanks guys, I just do what I can. I would love to do more but you can drive yourself crazy with this if you let it get to you. I will get there.
jim
It's me again. Tonight I am going to post twice again. I will explain in the second post.
Now the first set of pictures show that i got my muffler hung. I used the stock location for the rear hanger and a custom hanger for the front. Now I have to do is the pipe between the header and muffler and of course the money.
and
(http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l66/hellfirejim/muffler/Muffler108-31-08001.jpg)
I also have added another picture of the interior as I have painted some more panels and it doesn't look that bad but I will look a lot better once it is all black.
Ok enough of this, go on to the next post..... ;D
This post is about the immediate future and next year. First next year. These pictures show the parts that I will be using on the Pinto. EFI, yes EFI. I plan on changing it over as i already have about 85% of the parts already. I am going to try and record all the steps required to do this conversion. So here are the pictures....
and the wiring harness.
And now about the short term. I am going to be offline for 2 or maybe 3 weeks or even maybe more before anymore work on the Pinto gets done. I just got to get some surgury done.
So thank you to all who view these posts (4100 :hypno:) and I will be back.
jim
Best wishes Jim, Godspeed on your surgery. We look forward to more progress reports!!
Chris
Get well soon Jim. Vicky and I will keep you in our thoughts and prayers. We will have a cup of coffee for you on the back porch.
good luck jim, donna and i have you in our prayers. and as for curtis..... dont you think you could at least send him the coffee? he aint gonna want to come down right after surgery>>>>>> :showback:
He's had coffee on my back porch, so he knows what I mean. SO :showback:back at ya.
Hi all. I know it has been a while but this one has been a rough one. The good news is that I am healing and the out come from the surgury was as good as one could want.
Even though this is a bit early for me I have decided to put my pinto up on plates and jackstands for the winter. If you factor in the healing time and the fact that i have one more surgury in november plus my financial situation it just makes sense to get it ready for spring when i can get back to it.
Here is a picture...
So it is time for me to hibernate,,,,,,see you in the spring.
jim
Well I am back to bring everybody up to date on what is happening. The september surgery went very well but the nov surgery had some surprises. This last surguery was supposed to clean out all of the cancer but when they moved the liver to cut it they found the cancer had leaked to an area under my diaphram. it was hidden and nobay knew. So we start chemo in january.
But no sense in letting this get in the way. i all ready have people lined up for the work neccessary to ge my pinto on the road this spring. All i am waitng for is the income tax refund money.... :lost:
I was jusr re-reading my posts from this project thread and i realize how many times I thought I was going in one direction with the car and found out I was goingin another direction. Actually that is one of the things that makes it fun.
See you all in a couple of monthes or so when the money gets here.
jim
Welcome back Jim, I do hope all goes well with your Chemotherapy, as im sure we all hope to see you well and safe upon your return to us here.
Man, Jim, great to hear from you. I will certainly keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Thanks for checking in, always good to hear from you.
All the best, Happy New Year!
Chris
Prayers for remission Jim. Keep the faith brother, be it holy or automotive based ;D
Happy new year to you and yours
Sounds like you're still kickin', Jim! You never let off, do you? lol
I hope everything goes well with your chemo treatment. Keep us updated, I'm sure we all will keep you in our prayers. God bless and happy holidays!
Happy new year Jim. Vicky and I have you in our hearts and prayers. As we discussed earlier, when spring gets here, I'm coming up there and we're getting that Pinto on the road. Keep the faith, stay the course and Godspeed.
thank you all for your kind wrods and Curtis i am planning on it.
Santa brought some new parts. First is a thermostatic control for the electric fan and a new set of Lug nuts.
The little stuff helps get you through the winter....
Hi all, I am back from hibernation. First things first, I am doing well. We have found a new regiment of pills that help the side effects of chemo a lot.
I got the money from the income tax refund and we are just waiting for some better weather to move the car to the shop. Next weekend I will prep, primer and paint the spoiler so it will be ready. Perhaps within two weeks after that we can start, I hope so.
The reason for the posting is I will be showing the parts that I have collected. The first thing is the SPAL thermostate control of my electric fan. VEry nice piece and I highly reccomend it.
Now to the next post and more pictures.
Finally I am able toget this next piece. It is the final gauge for the three pod. It is the XD-16 Wide Band Air/fuel gauge. It gives me a digital reading in the center of the gauge and a color sweep around the outside edge of the gauge to catch your eye. If you have read all this you know i have a carb and this will help me tune it. When the turbo goes on it will be an absolute requirement so i don't burn it up.
This next picture might seem a bit strange but take a look at the gauge of wire. I will be re-wiring my electric fuel pump with the proper size wire. Too small a wire can make a difference. I will also be wiring in an enertia switch so if i get hit it will shut off the electric fuel pump. It goes in the 12v signal circuit for the fuel pump relay.
The package in the center is the body kit tape to mount the spoiler for now. Later when I am doing the body work i will be pulling the spoiler and mounting it permanently.
One more post and I am done for now.
This post is about seat belts. My passenger seat belt is gone and the drivers 3 point should be. Besides it is that god awful green..... So I went out and purchased 2 sets of 5 point cam lock seat belts. All it will require is to drill some holes and weld two tabs to the roll bar. Incidentely the roll bar will be padded. The cam locks are so new that they are still a little stiff. I go both for 1/3 the price since they were out dated. I don't ever plan to go to the track so it doesn't matter.
Finally it is just a picture of my new lug nuts.
Ok this is really it. I have found that I really like the look of the 70s Pinto Pro Stocks. Though this won't be a clone, it will be of that look. Well at least that is the plan for now.
Glad to hear you're doing well, Jim!
Keep us posted on your progress.
Your Pinto reminds me of the 75 hatch I had in 1998 (before this Pinto.
Chuck
Good to see you back Jim! I've been looking for updates of your project and the time is finally here! Good luck and I hope all is well. :)
-beegle55
:welcome: back Jim!
Looks like you're ready to hit the ground running! Glad to hear you're doing better.
Dwayne
Thanks for the good words. I am really excited because i know that this year will be a driving year. I want to make it reliable as I have a feeling I am going to take it on a 15 hour trip this spring or summer.
Just hard to wait with all the snow around here........
Hi all I am back with just a little bit more done on the Pinto. This is the duckbill spoiler that Mike makes. NOTE: Very clean and well made. I just had to scuff it before priming it.
This is the scuff and clean shot.
And this is the primer shot. I used a high fill flexable primer and works out sweet.
on to the next post. I hate more than two pictures in a post.
Where did you get yours, from the ebay auction or did you PM him for a request? I would like to get one to have around for when I have my car repainted.
This is the final color. I wanted to look like primer. This mount and paint is temporary. The big part is I don't know for how long "temporary" will be so I painted it instead of leaving it in primer.
I have included this shot for a couple of reasons. First if you look you can see the same spoiler on the back of this car. The second reason is this is the look i will be going for minus the stripes and such and the hood scoop. I happen to love that era of Pro Stock and in particular the Pro Stock Pintos. The first question that comes up is how can you drive with the front that close to the ground? Well believe it or not there are 2 companys selling air bag kits for my Pinto. Three settings. 1st is regular drive height. 2nd will be semi low for parades or cruising through parking lots. The third is dumped to just off the ground. Of course that is for display only.
My Pinto should be in the shop within 2 weeks if all goes well. I will do my best to take pictures.

My spoiler comes from Mike or MAP351. Lookk in the classifieds and he is posted there. I also have the three gauge pod for the A pillar and that is a good piece too.
jim
Just a short note to let you know the Pinto is IN the shop as I write this. The complete front brakes are new and the rear brakes are 90% new excluding drum and whel cyl. Interesting they found a partically closed metal brake line in the rear.
When it comes out I will try to get some pictures and then it goes to the exhaust shop to get the 2 1/2" exhaust pipe custom made.
Then I have to install the inertia switch for the fuel pump and my wide band but I can garantee you that I will be driving this car all over hell and creation........
so,,, will that driving to hell and back include another trip back down south here? enjoyed havin you down for the meet last year..steve
Absolutly ;D I will be down there. The schedule is not worked out but we (pinto and me) will find a way to get there. Right now I have to solve my brake proportioning problem. My leaks at the electrical connections. You know having an "orphan"" car is not like owning a mustang where you can just car anybody for parts. Got to search and depend on each other. But then again that is part of the fun.....
cool, keep us updated when you are gonna be in the area. im sure you are going to head towards curtis when you come down. he's only 2 hrs from me.
Yeah i will head on down to curtis place as soon as he gets my room ready...... I am sure that seeing you will be part of the deal. If nothing else but to show off my Pinto finally.....
Well boys and girls today was cool and sucks at the same time. The cool part was we got all the brake work done and a few other items. The sucks part is it blew a rod out the side of the block on the testing drive. The motor was supposed to be "blueprinted" and "good" parts but I saw a piece of the piston and it was cheap cast. So anyway I guess I will be looking for a turbo short block or possible a long block. Don't know yet as I haven't pulled the valve cover to see if I sucked a valve.
The good news is the money I set aside for the the custom exhaust will help me buy a new motor. I am sure I won't need the exhaust for a while. ;D
Remember at least it blew up here rather on the road somewhere.

Well, there is a bright side then. When you get the motor back together, it will stop! :accident:
And at least it happened close to home. Keep the faith. ;D
Chuck :afro:
Ok it is the next day, I am better. Life happens but there is no quit. I didn't come this far and work this hard to quit now. I will get another motor and keep going with the porject.
Jim,
I feel your pain. I had my 351W performance built by DISGRUNTLED employees that knew the shop was closing. That part got left out when I contracted them to do the work AND after paying them ALL the money, they handed me a basket case that was not even machined correctly >:( with a GEZ...sorry your timing sucked... :hangover: I focused not on the bad but focused on what I wanted to do better for the first rebuild but passed at the time because of the $$$ or otherwise. Thinking like that has kept me sane (some would argue this ;D) during some difficult times I have been through and going through right now, as we all do. Roll up your sleeves and start dreaming of the potential....

jim
Jim:
I assume the proportioning valve I sent worked for you then?
Chris
Chris,
it worked great. Sorry i didn't post as I only put it in on Friday and then it sort of gotover run... Thank you very much, I do appreciate it. So got a turbo motor laying around...
Glad to hear!! Of course, if I had a turbo motor laying around, I'd be using it.... :P
Best wishes! I am still plugging away at my own project.
Chris
Just a brief update. It appears that i may have found a turbo motor and to top it off it is my state. We have agreed on price and we are working out the details. More to come.
Today is a good day to post. Yeterday I took a 12 hour round road trip to get my new [to me] motor. As far as we can tell it is a 85 TC motor. Looks to be in good shape. The people I bought it from are genuine nice people. I have a good feeling about this. now i know it will probsbly have less power than my old motor but when i add boost I won't have to worry about it.
This is the plan. My buddy is swapping the motor for me and then i will then install the electric fan regulator and my wide band gauge. We will start to tune it and cure all the little problems that always show up. At that point I am hoping to try and find the money for the exhaust. With that I will be street legal and drivable. Life is good.
All you with projects, setbacks are only that if you allow it to be.... I now have a better base so when i go with boost everthing is going to be all right.
Almost forgot, here is the link for the pictures.

The motor looks good Jim. How many miles are on it?
That is an unknown. Here is the stor about the mtor. There is a guy who lives in St Louis who had a TC and then had a full blown motor made for the car. When it was ready he pulled out the stock motor and put in the hopped up motor. Then he got tiresd of it and sold the hopped motor and put in the stock motor. He had 4 cars and three garage spaces so he sold it to the guy I bought it from. No I don't know the milage but remember all I am asking for it to do is just run cleanly in a non-boosed foremate while i sort out the rest of the car. I am also picking up a turbo short block shortly that supposidly still has a crosshatch on the walls. That will be my security blanket and the basis for "the" motr that I might be able to start next year.
But first things first, get it in and running, sort out the car, tune it, add exhaust and then just drive it. All else is a bonus.
jim
First off i want to apologise for the last post but i was really tired. Here is the update. The old motor is already out of the car and of course we are running into a few small problems. My biggest so far is the turbo motor came with a rear sump and oil pickup. My Pinto uses a front sump and pickup. The oil pan got torn up with the departure of the rod so i am looking for a front sump and oil pickup. Got a few feelers out and I am waiting to hear a return. Hope it pans out.....so to speak.
This is all part of it when working with orphan cars. We will get through it like we have gotten through everything else.
jim
I have to admit that I am surprised that with all the people on here that nobody has an oil pan and pickup............................ :amazed:

thank you I am waiting to hear back from Curtis but if that falls through i will definately give them a call.
thanks
again.
jim
Jim, missed your post about needing a pan, I have one laying behind the barn, probably a little rusty from being outside but if you need it it's yours. I don't think I have a pick up tube but I will look. Let me know.
Could you take a look and let me know please.
thanks
jim
Jim, I found a pick-up tube and another oil pan in the trunk of my '80 Pinto. This pan is not rusty at all but it has a fair sized dent across the front of the sump. The other one is a bit rusty but not dented. Let me know which one you want and I'll get the tube and pan boxed up and shipped ASAP. If you want to see some pics first I can do that too. You can PM your address if you don't want to post it here. :)
PM sent.
jim
Here are the pics. Top one is the rusty one, it's not too bad, a little sand blasting would have it looking like new. The other two are the dented pan, a block of wood and a BFH would straighten it out. :)
Wow,
So many people have stepped up to offer help with an oil pan and pickup, i am really greatful. i made a decison based on my needs and have contacted that person. To all the other people thank you for your kind offers i really appreciate it.
jim
tonight I went and picked up my factory turbo shortblock from a friend local to me. i also got a bonus of a cylinder head thrown in too.
Tomorrow i will put up some pictures of the Pinto as it sits waiting for the new motor and if it is not raining tomorrow i will also have some pictures of the short block.
jim
As promised, here is a link to the pictures of the pinto without the motor.... The new oil pan and pickup should be here by tuesday. I don't have any pictures of the new shortblock yet because it was raining all day and is supposed to continue un till Wed so maybe some pictures then..
That's about it for now, take care

I forgot to tell you about the oil pan. It came from a friend of mine on the delayed payment plan until i learn it I have a job or not by the end of the month. It is the real deal and you can see the rest of the pictures at the above link. It will go back into the box until i can build "the" motor.
jim
The oil pan and pickup came today. looks real good. here is picture:

Until more happens or this weekend when i take the short block out of the truck and pack it away in the shed.
jim
No pictures today just some good news. I still have a job and they started back in working on the motor to stick back in the Pinto. Also the latest results for the cancer tests show a very little activity. So life is good.
glad to hear jim, keep on truckin, errr pintoin.... you know what i mean!! ;D
Well more good news. I stopped back at the shop and they fired up the Pinto. It fired at the touch of the key, idled smooth, had good oil pressure and almost 20 inches of vacuum. So the thermostatic controller for the fan gets installed and then off to get the exhaust done when i can come up with the money. When that is done I am going to install my wideband that I have and then drive the hell out of it to sort out any bugs.
jim
Glad to hear things are going well all the way around Jim! Sounds like you will be crusin' in the Pinto very soon. :fastcar: ;D ;D ;D
It's defective! No paint! :o :P ;D
Jim:
Good to hear from you, Godspeed on your project >and< your health! Thanks for keeping us up to date!!
Chris
Damn these little cars, if it is not one thing it is another. On the last test run of the new motor the trans is not able to select first gear. I saw that the adjuster ring had backed off and the shifter was just wobbling around. Now I need to find out about that.
Also working on installing the temp controlled on/off for the radiator electric fan.
Well I am back at it again. Yes the tranny is shot but I have a line on at least 3 maybe 4 boxes to put in. I have decided that right now i need to just get it up and ruinning and worry about it later. Down the road i am going to swap out to an automatic for health reasons and to hold the power when i boost the motor as this little trans may take one or two shots at the higher lever and scatter itself.
So what do i have for you today???? Well I installed my SPAL Thermostatic radiator electric fan controller. First i would recommend the SPAL kit as very high quality. i got it all wired and here is a picture of it. Most of the wiring is hidden but you can make out the relay in the pass corner by the hood hinge.
Here is the link to some more pictures of it.
http://s93.photobucket.com/albums/l66/hellfirejim/new%20motor/
So what is next? I just ordered the Ford inertia shut off switch for an Escort that i am going to wire in for my electric fuel pump. Depending on how that goes I am also planning to re-wire my fuel pump with a bigger gauge wire like it should have. The idiots put in 18 gauge wire and I know that won't last.
PS: I almost forgot, that is the new motor a 85 Factory turbo long block.
Hellfire, what is that setup going from the valve cover cap to the fender????
Not to jump on anyone's post, it is an oil overflow or catch tank that is required by race rules. HIGH RPM engines can and do burp oil on to the track just in front of YOUR own rear wheels 1st!!! FUN :hypno: :accident: Pictured is what I bought on Evil-Bay for under $20 delivered about a month ago for my Hanto Pinto race project...
Actually that is pretty close to the truth. what it is is an oil / air filtration unit for a dry sump oil system. It lets the oil drop out of suspension [if there is any] and the excess air breathes out the filter which keeps all the mess [oil] inside.
The system lets the engine breath which will be important when the boost is added.
Dang...I missed it by ][ that much ;D But you gave me an idea :amazed: I'm staying wet sump but I'm going to install a petcock valve on the bottom of the catch tank with a high pressure return hose feeding into a fitting that I'll install in near the top of the oil pan or feed back into the oil cooler return line (more likely). Then I can let captured oil back into the engine when I'm back at the Paddock cooling it down. You just saved me A LOT of messy hassle between races ;D :drunk: My Lotus engine was burping about 1/2 of one of these tanks each race (regularly hit 8000 rpm). I slightly overfilled it with oil for safety before each race (Paranoia). I am not using my AccuSump because it messed with me one time and cost me $$$. I don't trust it anymore and it's heavy >:(
71HANTO
You know that is why I created this thread that seems to have taken on a life of its own. If somebody sees something that they can use then so much the better.
This is another reason for working on my pinto is I can exchange ideas and thoughts for $$$$ which are in short supply. I really enjoy trying new things and simply doing it my to make me happy and it does.
Glad it was of some help.
jim
PS: Next is the install of the fuel shut off switch for my electric fuel pump.
Back in my dirt track racing days I had a 2300 that was set up just a little too loose (they turn up better when they're loose!) It had so much blow-by that oil blew out of the valve cover breather and caught on fire! I solved that by putting a Ford anti-backfire valve in the exhaust at a 45 degree angle and hooking a silicone hose from the valve to the valve cover. The exhaust flow created a vacuum that relieved the crankcase pressure. As long as I kept it around 7800 RPM everything was fine. At 8000+ I would get a tad bit of ring flutter and when I came off the corner the oil had gotten sucked into the exhaust and the smoke would roll for a few seconds!  I told people it was just an old worn out junk engine and it didn't run good until it started smoking! I won a lot of races with that ol' worn out engine!
Great story! I am working on something for the Pinto that is not quite far enough along just yet to say anything but I think it will be cool. More when the time is right.
This weekend if it doesn't rain is installing the inertia switch for the fuel pump and maybe a re-wire of the fuel pump harness.
Just a quick note before i head back out and work on my Pinto. I just heard that i am getting a complete autotrans out of a pinto that was on a 2.3. I don't know more than that and until weds when it is supposeed to arive.
Why is this important? Down the road i was going to swap to an auto for health reasons and strength this fell into my lap for $100. As i said i don'r know idf it is a C3 or C4 but either for now will work just fine. more info as it comes it.
Ok back to your regular warm weather posts. Today is pictures of my new inertia fuel pump shut off safety switch. A mouthfull. The first picture shows the parts required to put this together. It is amazing the amount of time it took to do this right. Basically I put the switch into a plastic box and mounted it next to the battery behind the pass seat within easy reach from the drivers seat.
The switch is from an escort and is relatively cheap $20. The pigtail for the wiring which you will need is over $30+ dollars. :hypno: Nuts and bolts about $10 and the aluminum was some scrap I had left over from another project. It just takes a lot of time to sort it out but worth it. The second picture is is installed.

Depending on the trans and such I may rewire the fuel pump next weekend.
Short update. The trans came in and it is a C3 which is just fine for my needs right now. Decided on a new flex plate [chewed teeth $24]. I ordered my new shifter and install kit of the trans cooler. Speaking of the trans cooler it is on its way too. With parts coming i will finish the saftey switch wiring and begine the fuel pump re-wire this weekend if the weather cooperates.
More pictures later.
Enough of this foolishness. When we gonna ride in this thing? I'm not going to put the 4.10, posi together until you drive it down here. It's coming along nicely considering all the setbacks you have had with the motor and trans lately. Git er dun. :showback:
hell i am paddling as fast as i can. i got the rest of the wiring for the safety switch done and it works. i also got the the ground strap from the engine block to the body.
my shifter arrived along with the trans cooler install kit. just waiting on the trans cooler and the package goes in the car......
got the fuel pump rewired. Now just waiting for the trans cooler to get here.... :read:
First is the trans cooler is here and it is so cool. This is one made at least 10 to 15 years ago and is it sweet. Not one plastic piece in the whole damn thing.. Absolutly first class fabrication.
This weekend i installed my spoiler. At first I was going to use double sided tape but after talking with someone who has done it before, it doesn't really work all that well. So what to do? Silicon Adhesive. Oh yes and make sure it is clear.
I first laid the spoiler up on the rear deck and it fit well. I then laid tape around the spoiler to give me a layout area. Oppss forgot, I carefully pryed up the Pinto emblem and the Ford letters.
Ok back to work. Since I knew the deck under the spoiler was going to be under there for about 2 years I took the time to prep the deck under the spoiler. I sanded and spreaded with a primer/sealer. When that dried I layed out a beed of silicon around the inside edge of the tape. I then laid on the spoiler and clamped the bottom and across the top I took a bowed piece of wood and put the bow down on the center of the spoiler to hold it down while it set.
After it had set, I cleaned up the extra silicon with a razor blade and it was done. Alright i can't leave well enough alone. Remember the Pinto emblem i took Off? look at the picture of the spoiler.

Looks great!
No the trans swap has not started yet..... :rolleye: However I did do a little something. I got a set of front coil springs used from Chris (POPbumper) and i cleaned them by hand. The first thing was to spray them with PB blaster tolossen the rust. I then rubbed them down with a grey scrub pad. yes by hand. After that i then took to some sandpaper and went over the coils springs. i cleaned them and degreased them to spary with flex primer.
After that I sprayed them with a flexable bumper cover paint. Better than nothing while i wait for the trans swap....[did i mention that the wait is driving me crazy.......

More when it happens.
I said more when it happens and it is happening. On the way home i got a call from my buddy to stop by the shop. Since i am not using a stock shifter there were issues to solve. Some good fabrication should solve it. I also had to locate where i wanted the shifter to go. by the time i get home tomorrow from work they should be pretty far along.... I hope.
PS: I didn't say it out loud but the car is in the shop for the tranny swap and the front coil spring swap. when it comes out it should be a different car..... ;D
Progress report on the tranny swap. They had to fabricate a new shfter cable mount to fit but with that done the trans is in the car. Additionally the 4 spd driveshaft fit perfectly behind the C3. More good news is the trans hole is covered by a plate which doubles as a shifter mount point. The shifter is installed and adjusted.
Next come the mounting of trans cooler and the lines. A few other items like the removal of the clutch pedal and cable. After the trans part is done we still have to put in the new front springs.
To tell the trutch I am going crazy waiting to get it all done. here are few shots. the bracket is hard to see, sorry.

PS: The white ball is going aay to be replaced with my T handle with lineloc button sitting in the tray in front of the shifter.. ;D

The pictures are of the tranny cooler and lines. Yes i have already made some changes but no pictures yet. Here is just one of them.

Evening all. Been a long day. I quoted the picture above so you can see what i did. The electric radiator fan was not coming on properly [poor ground] so i figured the easiest solution was a ground ring and spacer. Here is the picture, mostly self explanatory.

 Just finishing up odds and ends before saturday and the exhaust.
i did realize that my fuel gauge doesn't work so i will need some ideas on that.
jim
Just a note that if all goes well the car goes to get it's exhaust made and installed tonight. They are going to do it first thing in the morning tomorrow.. yeah I am excited about it as this is the last piece that is keeping me from driving it on a regular basis and without looking over my shoulder. Yes I have other things to do but this is major.
To follow up on what I was posting, I went and picked up the Pinto and got a pleasent surprise. The bill was half of the estimate. i had to ask and he said that after the front part the rest just sort of fell into place. I used 2 1/2 inch pipe but not mandral bent so at the tightest it is probably a 2inch which is perfect for my needs. Maybe one day it will be mandral.
They did a very good job, all nice and tucked up out of sight. As for the exhaust tone, it is really nice and mellow at cruising speeds but when you step on it, it really starts to bark. OH Yeah!!!!
After all the work and time on this car [about 9 pages worth] it is finally at a stage where I can drive it anytime I want. :fastcar:
So was all the time and effort worth it???? After that first drive the answer is a resounding yes.... :drunk:
I also wanted to take a second to thank all of you reading this stuff. If you look there are over 10,000 views. There were times that I didn't have the ambition to go out there and work on the car but then I thought about all the people reading this that i didn't want to disappoint.
This is just stage one completed. [almost ] Next stage is working on all the little stuff to make sure all systens around the car are working right and are dependable. Next spring will come some more work to make the drivetrain bullet proof and then we work on adding boost. And did I mention body work and interior work and, and, and......
:rolleye:
So now it is off to start on the little stuff... :read:
Sounds like it's all gonna be nice for ya. Lookin forward to more updates as you go along
today's work was chasing down electrical gremlins. I got the front parking lights to work. In the rear I had to pull the tailight to get to a completly rusted outside bulb holder. Sure would explain why it is so dim. Anyway went to autozone and got a 2 wire bulb holder and it fit well. I also added a little sealer around the the holder and the body. I also used di-eletric rease on the bulbs.
So i got that fixed. Don't know why only the left front turn signal won't work..Got to work on that too.
The eletric radiator fan is not working properly. I can jumper it at the sensor and it works fine but for some reason the sensor doesn't work right so I need to get that right.
Also going to install some new [to me] front springs to try and get some front end travel and lower the front 2to3 inches. I will take the opportunity to look at the front suspension while we are there.
jim
PS: still smiling.........
Jim:
It's great to see such progress. I can understand where you have been, because I am there myself. There are just some days when I want to "throw in the towel", because the effort is so overwhelming. Your effort is inspiring, I am driving towards getting everything done myself, and it's a LONG process. Congrats on your success, I have enjoyed watching this unfold over the last year.
Chris
Jim, it's times like this that I get inspired to work on my car. I wish there were more stories like this so I could get more motivated to work on my own.
John? I thought he was Jim.... :P
Chris
Oops.. I fixed lol. I was thinking Jim but for some reason John came out & I didn't even see it
;D ;D ;D ;D
Matt's probably thinking of my John Lennon tattoos... ::) :P
Becky's got tatoos? Sweet. You must be the little rebel lmao
I is! ;D ;D ;D
Thanks for the kind words and............the tattoos. ;D
The only thing I can tell you is what I do. When I am getting burned out or frustrated or out of money for the next fix, I go find something small to work on and get fixed and then with a sense of accomplishment it keeps me going and of course you the people that read this. If I can help or inspire just one person to complete their car then this has all been worth it. Remember I don't refer to this car as "That damn little car" for nothing.... ::)
Right now my major frustration is the temp sensor for the electric radiator fan. I tested the sensor last night and it works just like it should. So if I jumper the ground wire off the sensor the electric fan comes on and works great. It really cools the car down right away. If the sensor is good and the wiring is good then it has to be in the installation of the sensor which I did not do. It has an adapter and then the sensor. I am thinking there is something on the threads. The plan is since the sensor is already out I will clean it's threads and then pull the adapter out and clean it's threads and the manifold. I am also going to look at the flow of the water and make sure the sensor placement is in the best place. Might move it, don't know.
I will post what I found. Almost forgot. With my combination I have a holley fuel pump that sounds like I am re-fueling the space shuttle. While I was out driving I shut off the pump for a second and man did it get real quiet inside. Got to fix that. My buddy says he has a thick rubber isolator from an a/c unit that just might work. We will see.
ok enough for now.
jim
jim have you checked the relay for the fan? sometimes they can be bad. just a thought.
That is a good point but I have done that by manually grounding the the ground wire at the end of the sensor and the system works perfectly.
I reassembled everything last night so i will take it out for a test drive tonight to see if it works. I am beginning to believe it is a flow problem or having the sensor in the right place. If it gets warm and the fan does not come on, I will turn on the heater to get the water flowing through the area and if the fan kicks on then I will know it is a flow problem. Since the car has a 85 t-bird turbo motor in it i will get another thermostate housing and set it up of the sensor and just be done with it. In the mean time i still have the manual switch and wiring in place so i can bypasss the sensor system and just return it to manual until i get the thermostate housing setup for the sensor.
Does anybody have a thermostate housing for the t-bird?
jim
Well the sensor in it's current location doesn't work. I am betting it is a location problem and not getting a reading or flow to trigger the fan. Luckely I retained the manual switch setup. I re-wired the fan to manual and when i tested it last night it was 90degrees and high humidity and the highest i could get it to was 190 degrees on a manual guage. So now I am looking for another location for the sensor as i really would like it to be an automatic function. So if you can come with a suggestion?????????
Next step is the front end and new [to me] front springs.
Just a note to bring you up todate. The car will go in the shop today or tomorrow for the front spring swap and check out of the front suspension. Fix the gas gauge [I hope} and service the rear end.
This holiday weekend will be spent driving and working on the body.....
I got up the nerve to send in my registration to the local car show for july 26th. I hope they have an under construction class. They have between 800 - 1000 cars every year.
Sounds like a blast! Either way you will pobably get quite a few looks since there might not be another Pinto there. Have fun & good luck on the repairs
Well not much of anything goes smooth. When they started to tear into the front end they found a bad ball joint but also the shocks were frozen inro place. I had to pick the shocks i wanted so the old one are gettuing cut out.
BTW: I have 98 ranger 3.0 that just turned 250,000 miles today. Runs just as good today as it did 11 years ago.
Since we are waiting on parts {sound familar?} and my buddy who owns the shop up the street is goen for all three days AND I have the key to the shop I am going to do some body work. i am taking off those clips and springs for the trim. They are all have rivets so I am going to grind the heads off the rviets to pull off the cips. they are really ugly and dangerous. Since i am entering my first car show on the 26th I need to get this done.
I am going to be so spoiled, 3 days in a SHOP. that's right inside!!!!
heading out
jim
I was not even going to start body work until the mechanical part of this deal was done. However the oprtunity to use the shop for three days and the need to remove all the chrome trim studs and mounting wires because of the hazard they would be at the car show.
Here is what the studes look like:

I used a cutting wheel to grind them all down and remove all the clips. Here is a shot of the paint prep.
I just could have primered every spot but I thought that would look stupid and pokadot so I figured I might as well have some fun so i made the stripe. The black is the primer. I also primered around the windows.
When i pulled the tape off i realized just what an impact that stripe had on the car. Since I don't need the attention I thought I would go get some matching yellow paint and just paint over. naturally nobody had anything close so i just got some yellow as that would be a lot better than the black. Here is a shot of it while still taped.
By the way I am really starting to like the darkern window frame at the bottom and considering blacking out the door frame. might just try it while everything doesn't count.....
More to come tomorrow and a lkink to all the pictures. Yes it has been fun and great. Damn i wish i had a garage as it sure would have been a lot easier.. Oh well such is life........
later

As promised here is the last picture after the paint. Not the best but way better than black. also this is just temporary [can you say that knowing full well it might be another year or two?]
anyway here is the picture.

I also painted the back inside body work black.

next post the front spring replacement
This is about replacing the front springs. The car originally had A/C and all of that is gone but still had the extra strong springs which jacked the front end up almost solid. We put in new [to me] front springs along with a ball joint and shocks and now it is lowered just a bit and rides really well.
Here it is before.....
and here it is after. Not too much different but later plans are to rememdy that. it rides really well and i just need the front end aligned. the Camber is off.
here is the link to the whole set...

next... On to the gas gauge.
have you given any thought to looking for the 77 aluminum bumpers for it? i got a set for mine and then tucked them up close like the early small bumper pintos and it looks great and dropped a good 100 lbs off the car. nice progress by the way.
Actually I have my eye on a 77 Rallye Pinto that does indeed have the aluminum bumpers. I plan to make new bumper brackets and do what you did by tucking them up close. I am also toying with the idea of have the bumpers look like brushed aluminum. I too like the idea of losing 100lbs.
At this point I have to give credit to my friend Glen up the street who has a repair shop/used car lot. Typical little town deal. Without his help I could have never gotten this far as there are somethings i just can't do any more.
It appears that my dash piece for the speedo and gauges is broken as it just rattles around in there. I am going to leave itfor now and just make sure the tank is full. I need this running because i need to get to joliet/RT66 July for the meet to see all the other Pinto owners.

Thanks Phil. As i said befoe Fred was already planing on stopping here as he has some hood bumpers for me. Maybe it will work out, thanks for the effort.
jim
i just have to get the front and fred say he can deliver
phil
Cool, life is good. ;D
jim
Glad to see you're still at it, Jim!
:)
Chuck :afro:
Thanks Chuck, still kicking. How about you? Still working on the Pinto?
Hey Jim:
Down to tying up loose ends, looks like this one is sold and going to a new home this weekend. Will be replacing (hopefully) with a 79 wagon.
Chuck :afro:
It appears you are like me and that even though I really enjoy driving mine I really enjoy the building and creating one of these little monsters. ou really have to be creative on these cars as parts are not available at your local store to buy and just bolt on..... bolt on, what is that??? :read:
I thought about if somebody offers me money for this car. I don't know the answer, probably depends on the amount.... It would have to be a lot.
jim
I have sold a few cars because they were 'finished' or I got so-called writer's block (what do I do next?) I tried driving new cars, but got bored cuz there was nothing to fix. No soul in a 95 Metro. Not a bad car, was just hard to justify tearing apart a one-year old car with 8,000 miles on it. My Pinto is still for sale, the deal fell thru, so I may get some more done before she goes. I had a 78 wagon a few years ago that I changed to the 79 front end, I ground all the studs for the chrome trim off that car. What a PITA! I agree though, not something you want to snag yourself on.
Chuck :afro:
just a short note as i have a ton of things to do. I got the front end aligned and what a difference. it really brings the confidence back into driving it. Got more stuff going on, will post later.
jim
A couple of neat things. First while i was running some erands i was driving the Pinto. Out on the road I got a couple of thumbs up from a harley guy and a pro street style duster. That was really cool.
If you have been reading this you know that the noisy fuel pump is driving me crazy. when i am driving and i turn off the fuel pump the car is as quiet as any new car. Well i may have found a soulution. An inline fuel pump that puts out 5.5 to 9 lbs of pressure. Since my car right now is carbed this should work out well. I will know this week.
This Saturday i am going to the track for sure now and I will report back on any pinto's i see. i will try and remember my camera and extra batteries....
ok this is just too cool, i am so jacked.... We replaced that holley POS fuel pump with an inlne fuel pump from CarQuest. It was one of their generic ones. They have two. One is 2.5 to 4 lbs and the second was 5.5 to 9 lbs which is the one I got. It comes with a prefilter and mount brackets for $55.
I took it out and I could barely hear it. And this is with almost no interior so once i get some padding and interior in it i won't be able to hear it at all... Life is really, really good. This makes the car a pleasure to drive and takes a way a really big problem.
this is not a post about what I am doing to the car but what i am doing with the car. The car is finally to a stage that i feel comfortable in it and because of that Saturday i am taking the car to the superbowl drags at Rt66 in chicago. it is about an hours ride from my house. As i understand there are going to be a number of other pintos and turbo 4 cyl cars there from all over the midwest. A lot of these people I have "talked" with over the internet but now is an opportunity to actually meet them.
To say the I am excited is an understatement.I am just so jacked at being about to finally drive this car like it is supposed to be driven. are there still some issues??? You betcha, BUT i am not letting this opportunity go by.
All of you out there, drive your cars and enjoy them. that is what they do best.
jim
Have a GREAT time, Jim!!! Don't forget to come back and tell us all about it!
Dwayne
Sorry guys to disappoint you but the Pinto is going no where. I went out to prep it for the trip, checking fluids and such and fired it up. It started to chug and not clear up. it did that one other time. so i figured new plugs. helped but not the answer....Was going to put in new cap and rotor but it won't be there untill tomorrow.
Soooo here are the possibilities:
1. Coil going bad
2. Fuel regulator allowing too much fuel to go in the carb, flooding
3. possible ford ign box going bad.
4. possible wiring problems..
anyway i am still going but I am taking my ranger as it is just too far to go with a possible problem.
Sorry, i am disappointed but better to happen at the house and not on the road or in chicago.
jim :(
Too bad :( and I know you're disappointed, but as you said: it's a lot better to have happened at home. I'm sure you'll have the problem resolved soon! Have fun at the show!
Dwayne
Well i went to the show anyway and only saw one pinto which was a V8. when i went back to get pictures of it i couldn't find it. I got some shots of Turbo 2.3s. I met some people that I had know on the internet but never met in person. that was cool as they are good guys. here is the link to the pictures:
http://s93.photobucket.com/albums/l66/hellfirejim/nmranmca%20rt66/ (http://s93.photobucket.com/albums/l66/hellfirejim/nmranmca%20rt66/)
heading out to find out what happened to the pinto. later
Well I have fund out what was causing the problem or i should say the problems. I first reset the fuel pressure which was a little bit high. I think that was the result of a better pump and a POS holley regulator.
Then I started searching for the ignition problem. I replaced the cap and rotor and the plugs which did help some but not the whole problem. I went over to my buddys and borrowed a coil to check mine. When i switched them it got a lot better. So I thought I had found my problem, bad or dying coil. Not so as when I went to pull the coil wire out of the spare coil the wire came off and left the metal piece on the coil. That was the source of my ignition problems. It is true, it usually is the simplest things.
it was so much better at this point but still not right. The idle was low so I was going to raised it a bit and took off the aircleaner. When i was looking down the throat of the carb I could see that gas was coming out the back two barrels. I will have to pull it another day as right now i am tired. tomoorrow is another day.
jim
Hey Jim!
Sorry to hear about your car trouble! It's good to know that you're making effort to correct it, though. :)
Glad to hear you had fun at the show. It would have been nice if you could have taken the Pinto, but at least you had problems at home, and not half-way there.
I'm sending you prayers of health, energy, and motivation.
I hope you don't mind my plagiarizing your signature, but you've really been a big inspiration to me over the last few months.
Best wishes!

Mind, I am honored. Feel free. it is tuff to do this with no money and limited physical resources and no garage and by yourself but if you want it bad enough and you are hard headed enough you can get it done.
BTW: I looks like I am going to be an owner of a 77 Rallye Pinto with the special instrument package and the dash instrument package. Floors are ruff and parts of the bottom are rusted through but it will be good for parts. it also has the ralley wheels too. so if you hear of anybody looking for parts like this let me know. When i actually get it i am going to look real close at all that is available. it even has the big class hatch in good shape. Oh and the stearing column and steering wheel are already claimed for ME. LOL
If I have helped in any small way then the effort to keep this thread updated is worht it to me as that was the sole purpose for doing it.

Phil,
You don't have to go to that much effort. I plan to make them look like brushed aluminum instaed of chrome shiny. I think the look will be cool and not the standard chrome deal. At that weight my current bumper brackets weigh more than that, not to mention the impact bar and the shock mounts. All of the afore mentioned pieces will be gone and replaced by light weight brackets that will pull the bumpers in closer to the car. i think it will change the whole appearance of the car and drop about 100 lbs off the car.
thank you sir I appreciate your efforts.

here is the pictures of the bumpers
i was not going to make them perfect just tried to get some of the years of dirt off
the rear is rough let me know and we go from there. phil
yeah they are ruff and probably not of use to most but remember I am going to scuff down the finsh to look lke a brushed aluminum finsh so that should take care of most of the surface problems. as for the corrsion. i have this mexican guy who is a fantastic welder and really likes the pinto and has done all my welding work. they look good enough to give them a try.
Jim
This car is going to make me crazy. My buddy was going to take care of the carb problem for me and he told me when he got into it, it ran perfectly. After the carb bowl came off there was no dirt or anything. So did some research and found the using a carb like i have where 80 -90% of the time i am on the front two barrels, the back too barrels needle and seat will sometimes stick or not seat right and leak. So the obvious answer is i have to use the back two barrels more....
Hopefully will do my first cruise on Sat night. And don't forget my first car show on Sunday....
PUNCH IT!!! :fastcar:    ;D ;D ;D :) :) :)
Keep your eyes peeled for the 'fuzz' you know... :police:
Chuck :afro:
Went on a cruise today. what a great deal of fun. i wil post more tomorrow after the car show. i will try and get some pictures.....
I posted about the cruise and car show in the General pinto talk area. Here is the photo link in case you missed it. http://s93.photobucket.com/albums/l66/hellfirejim/sycamore%2007-25-09/?start=0 (http://s93.photobucket.com/albums/l66/hellfirejim/sycamore%2007-25-09/?start=0)
On the cruise the car performed great. I have not enjoyed it more at any time. Oh i am so sunburnt.....
next weekend i go back to work on the car as this is a never ending job. I often wonder what will come first retirement or finishing the car???????
jim
Jim,
Looks like a really nice show - glad you had a good time!
Dwayne
yeah it was great. You know that this is probably the biggest outdoor car show i know of short of a national meet as we had between 800-1000 cars all parked in this town. They literally shut the whole town down.
So I start again making it better. Right now my next step is to dis-assymble the blown motor for good pieces and get it out of my buddy's shop and add to muy collection of motor parts. Got enough parts to put another turbo motor together..... :rolleye:
I guess the gas gauge is next....... :read:
Actually it will be more like gas gauge, wiring of the lights for the gauges and installation of the a/f meter. Also have to get the holes left from the trim removal welded shut before the winter. My granddaughter is coming out this weekend and she loves the car so i will spend some time with her and then oin to the electrical work.
This post will be a little different. During the course of any long term project there are times when you just have to sit back and see if you are drifting off course. This is one of those times. My original goal with the car was to have a fun cruiser for around town. That has not changed but i have drifted from that. The most obvious example is the motor. I originally wanted a turbo and then at least supercharged but since i have been driving it around i realize i don't need all that power to have fun. The result of this is a re-alignment of objectives.
My goal for the last of 2009 and 2010 is to complete the mechanical portion of the projest. To accomplish this I will be doing the following:
1. The cylinder head will be sent out to be mildly ported and polished, better than stock cam and have the head shaved a bit to raise compression.
2. Since I have a 4 barrel manifold that is proving to work just great i will be swtiching over to a throttle body fuel injection setup.
3. There is supposed to be a new bell housing coming out this fall that will mate a 2.3 to a v8 C4 trans. I will purchase one of those and a C4 trans.
4. I will have the new rear center section [4:10-posi] installed.
5. the front end will be dropped about 2 inches.
6. The rear tires will be replaced with taller and wider tires
7. Rear wheel opening will need to be slightly modified to accomplish the new tires.
So what does this really do for me and advancing the project? Going down the line it looks like this.
1. This will give me about 150or so real horsepower. More than enough at 2500lbs. Compared at a power to weight ratio it will fall between a new Mustang gt at 300hp and the V6 at 200hp.
2. The objective of the car is to be a trouble free cruiser and TBI will give this to me at a cost of 1/3 the regular EFI and cost is very important.
3. This will give me a chance to make my driveline bullet proof. i can save money because i don't require a "built" C4 since a stock V8 C4 trans can easily hold the power i am making.
4. The new gearing with posi will add to the effect of more horsepower around town where i will be driving 90%+ of my time. Most likely a 1 hour time frame will take me to most places I want to go to.
5. this will be doine with dropped spindles. It will be to achieve the look i am going for, ealy Pro Stock Pinto.
6. The tires now are about 26 inches tall and i will be going to a 28/29 inch tall tire. That will fill up the wheel well better, give better traction and ease the gear a little. It will raise the rear of the car an inch.
7. Due to the increase down in front angle and the larger tires the front of the wheel well will have to be moved back to provide more clearence.
So there you have it. Sorry for the long post but i wanted to explain the shift in direction and why.
jim
Always enjoy your reports, Jim. My efforts have been on furlough with the heat of summer, I will be deep in it once the weather cools off.
It is also important to mention that I have a friend with a shop that is allowing me the use of it this fall. This will change my capabilities, progress and challenges a great degree. I anticipate a far deeper and thorough restoration since I will be able to have the car in secure shelter. More later.
Chris
Chris,
You are a lucky man. Havng a place inside makes all the difference. When winter comes for me the car goes up on jack stands and a car cover. Frustrating to lose that building time but such is life.
jim
I have a little more info on the throttle body fuel injection. The company I have been talking with has done about 200 of these 2.3 conversions. They are best known for their 300 Ford six conversions and have done about 2000 of them. The kit is complete with every thing except a return line and high pressure hoses.
This is not a tease because that is all I am going to say at the moment as it will be spring when i go buy one and put it on my car. At that time I will talk about the ease of installation and how it performs. It is not cheap but about a 1/3 of a regular after market EFI port injection but I feel this is the way to go. And for those interested in boost it can be converted to blow through but in does increase the cost by about another 1/3.
Life has Balance.......yeah it is going to be one of those posts.....
This saturday i buried a friend of 9 years who i worked with and for the last 4 years we were each others support system in our battles with cancer. He got tired of the fight and his lack of quality of life and layed down is sword. He was a very good friend.
But as i said before, Life has balance. Saturday afternoon my daughter and son-in-law brought my 15 year old grandaughter to visit. They had to run an errand so i took my gandaughter out for a ride in the Pinto at her request. While we were out we talked and she told me how cool old cars are and in particular my Pinto. I made a stop on a dirt road and got out and told her to do the same. I then told her to get in the drivers seat. When we both got back in she said she had never driven a car and I told her i knew that. I had her leave it in drive and just idle down the raod to get used to the feel of the car, steering and brakes. After she got comfortable I told to give it a little gas to where she was comfortable. (20mph) Long story short she is SOOOOOOO hooked now on the car. I am going to leave it to her when my time is up because she would drive it and appreciate it. it make me feel good to know it will be going into good hands.
The second part is what my kids brought me. Bryon found it at a flea market he was working. Pictures below.

Life is good!!!!!!
ypur lucky to have a grand-daughter that appreciates the car, and im very sorry for the loss of a good friend of yours.
Thanks. Knowing that the car is going to end up with someone who truly cares and will take care of it motivates me even more.
jim
very good story hope fully every time she drives it she will rember the "first drive"
And her grand father too................. ;D
Good news, my gas gauge came today. I wil be putting it in the empty hole in my A Pillar 3 pod from MAP. I also got some of those red caps that go over the lights for the instruments. Since the 3 pod sits at eye level I am thinking that the red light will have less effect on night vision than the white lights. While I am at it I will also cover the lights in the dash. Might look cool, who knows. Additionally I have to wire in the actual power to the instrument lights. Looks like this is going to be an electrical weekend.
For those wondering, the plastic behind the instrument cluster is typically coming apart and since I have an Tach on my steering column it covers up the gas gauge anyway. Putting it in the 3 pod makes the most practical sense.
Just a quick note. I tried my lights the morning at about 5 am and some of my gauges havw lights that work so i have a swtichable source of power for the instrument lights. Also going to install the gas gauge. yes i will take some pictures.
At work we have a fair amount of car guys and we are planning a get together on sept 12th at a local car show. Should be cool.
My momma told me there would be days like this..... :amazed:
i started by ulling the center gauge panel and put in the red ite cover. not much of an issue so on to the A pillar 3 pod. When i put it in the first time I just stuck it in so this time I took it apart and sanded and painted it. this will hold until i blow the car apart for final prep and paint. i added to the two gauges with the red light covers and installed my fuel level gauge. I got it installed, turned on the power and the gauges does NOT work!!! :rolleye:
I go back and check all the inputs through the wires and all is right. Now here is the part that bothers me. The ford gauge is 0 ohms fuel and 90 ohms empty. I measured the ohms and it was about 70 ohms. That fact plus the fact i know there is more than 1/2 a tank of gas in the car, more like about 3/4. So I have to go to auto meter and sort out it I have a good gauge and/or I bought the wrong one....Right now it looks like maybe wednsday after work will be my only chance to stop over at autometer. If not then it will be the last of next week. Frustrating but it is all part of messing with these cars.
jim, the ford gauge is a 0 to 70 the 90 ohm is a gm.
Correct. I got about 5 ohms to 72 ohms on mine.
Chris
is that zero empty or full? right now I am readying 70 ohms and it is 3/4 full. but even so chouldn't it have at least read something????? peg stayed below empty and didn't move. If I have the wrong one so be it, I will get the right one.
Did I mention I am still working on the gas gauge???????? I know the tank is full and the ohms read 70. Tomorrow I am goin to ground the tank and see if that is it. If not then obviously i need a new sender. if so it will wait for the spring when i drop the tank to put in all new grommets and such. also to put in the retune line. In the mean time I will just have to watch it close and keep at least a half a tank in it.
Number of Misc items today.
First is the gas gauge. It is installed in my three pod and looks good but doesn't work, sorta. I grounded the gas tank and the needle came off pegged up to empty. i know that is not right as i filled the tank so obviously the sender is bad and most likely the float is full and on the bottom. Not going to do anything now, will wait for spring when we pull the tank for all new gaskets, a fuel return line and a new sender.
Next is the front bumper area. Since the front bumper is off and never to return, the front beam was just sitting out there all rusty and looking like hell. so i wire brushed it, coated with rust converter and painted it flat black to improve the looks. You decide.
last item is a tool i needed but couldn't find. I have a lot of chrome trim holes to weld shut. the easiest way to do this is with a mig and a copper plate behind the hole to fill it in. The weld does not stick to the copper and supports the weld while it is filling in the hole. Pretty cool. anyway i just decided to build it. I got a copper cap [hasto be substantial] and a hammer handle for $9. I cut out a slice of the cap, stuck it in the handle ,and drilled a hole for a bolt and there it is.

So that was my weekend........
Not a whole lot to talk about at the moment as today sunday, it is raining but tomorrow i plan to go out and find out why the speedo does not have dash lights and if possible change it to red to match the the other gauges. i am going to try and get a picture of what they look like. I also plan to do the tach the same way. I know it is not much but at least it is something as we get closer to the end of the season and i have to put her up for the winter.
The good news is that i drove her for about an hour Saturday, life is good. Can't believe the lift it gives you when driving the car and I really needed it.
jim
PS: working on something i can't talk about but if it does work it will mean more new pieces before winter. I will let you know.
Well someday i will learn to leave well enough alone. :embarassed: The actual dash lights were not working so i pulled the instrument cluster and the white part just feel apart. Yeah i need one, I put in a request in the parts wanted.
As for the other deal it fell through so no matter I just wait till spring and the income tax check.
jim
Just want to say I feel your pain. Twists and turns and changes are all part of the game, when restoring/modifying one of these things.
Thanks for the nice comments/encouragement on my Cosworth Pinto, too! I've been following your project, as well as popbumper's.
Paul
yeah if you have been following then you know it has not been a trip down the yellow brick road....
I enjoy reading about other peoples cars and what they are doing and I especially enjoy the unusual stuff. Though I have the greatest respect for thoses that restore their cars, it is not for me. I need to make it mine and the way I want it. Looking at the 4.6 swap into a Pinto and the Cobra independent rear that grumpy is doing. Imagine the two of those together in one car:hypno:
jim
Jim i am with you on that i like to watch every ones projects see how they are progressing and get new ideas. And i like the 4.6 and really like the independant rear.
I watch them go thru the highs and also the lows which believe me i have experianced full spectrum of very high to snake belly low. But its all fun lots of fun. Dont give up on yours yet still alot of good weather before winter. Theirs always something to tinker with.
Not to diverge, but that is what I enjoy about the folks here - we're all different in the way we do things, and all appreciate what the other guy is doing.
I am like Jim - I really dig the mods guys do - which is way beyond my capability level. I am also just the opposite of Jim - I can't stand to NOT restore my car, which is why it is taking so long to get done. The hardest part of restoration is the "wait" :-\ - I can't drive it until I have all of the work done, and I really miss out; it gets depressing sometimes, but I still forge on to the goal.
I have lots of pics to share soon; right now my dash is out, heater box is open, and steering wheel is on the floor (I have another steering shaft I am restoring on the side). I bought a new inner fender, and it will be grafted in by a local HIgh School metal shop this fall (mine is BADLY corroded). Lots and lots of work, but it will be like new when done. ;D
Chris
I like all the projects going on here. Sometimes I can't believe the patience some of you have, then I look at my project, started in 1988, put away, restarted, done over, put away, and restarted again. I even built an extra two-car garage, just to have somewhere to keep this lump out of the weather! (Did I tell you my wife is a saint?)
When I'm finally done with the Cosworth Pinto, I'm going to have a "garage sale". I have stuff in the attic, waiting to go back on the Pinto, that I've not seen in years. I have personally dismantled at least five Pintos and a Bobcat, saving what I need and putting much of the rest aside "just in case".
I have an old Craftsman toolbox full of the little nit-noy thingies someone may really need to complete their project/restoration, and I'd be happy to send it on for the cost of freight.
I also have a whole box full of tail light assemblies. None of them were "good enough" or the right model, so here they sit. Like I said, there's going to be a garage sale/giveaway someday.

Yes there is some time but I have more time than money. Right now I am redoing my instrument cluster as the white plastic crumbled. Other than that I got my aluminum bumpers and I am going to try to see if I can get them from chrome to a brushed aluminum look.
Give up???? I doubt it, if she hasn't driven me away by now It just ain't going to happen. I can't wait till my income tax check next february, have I got plans to finish the mechanicals.

Not to diverge, but that is what I enjoy about the folks here - we're all different in the way we do things, and all appreciate what the other guy is doing.
I am like Jim - I really dig the mods guys do - which is way beyond my capability level. That is one of the benefits of modifying it. When I finally got it up and running it made such an improvment in my atitude about working on the car. My wait was close to two years but it has been worth the wait as it is just so much fun to drive and will be even more fun when I get the next set of goodies this spring.
yeah i too have a corroded right inner panel where the battery was. Actually I have a whole lot of body work to do but that will wait untill 2011 as 2010 will devoted to getting it to be as close to mechanically where I want it.
Like I said before I respect the time and effort it requires to restore one of these little babys but just not my style.

I have noticed that I am starting accumulate a lot of parts too. :look: I even have enough parts to build another motor that will EFI and turboed [BIG Turbo] but that will go into something else.
i hope everybody remembers to post up the pictures when they are working. I know it can be a hassel but you learn so much more that way.
jim
Nothing earth shaking, but a decision to go in a different path in regards to my gas tank. I would have to drop the stock tank, replace all the gaskets and seals, replace the sending unit and modify the tank for a return line for my conversion to EFI.
Instead I am getting a 12 gallon fuel cell [factory tank is 13 gal]that already has a sender and foam in the cell and all the fuel out and fuel in place. Once I pull the original gas tank I will cut out the spare tire well and weld in a circular top piece. Then I will attach the tank under the rear floor boards [hangs down about the same as the stock tank] and cut a square in floor for one of those double seal flap doors so when I fill the tank I open the hatch and open the flap and there it is. Keeps the gas out of the hatch area. If it was a sedan car i would have mounted it on the floor in the trunk.
The reasons why i am going this way are fairly simple. All new parts, safer, better match for what I need and for the EFI conversion and eventually my grand daughter will be getting this car and i want it right for her.
jim
i know the trunk model makes a difference but i cut a square hole and made a cage and droped my cell thru 7 inches and left 5 inches sticking up that let me have a 20 gallon tank i used the aluminum tank that has a ball valve and a vent and a heavy duty screw on alum cap. it also has a 90 ohm gm sender in it. i would think it would be safe in a hatch car also. I really like being able to pack on the 20 gallons. just sharing.

Nice install!!! I would normally have done that but as i said this will eventuaqlly be nm grand daughters car and i wanted to go the extra step for her which means I mount it underneath the car so all gas fumes and such are not in the hatch area.
But that is what makes ford Pinto. COM the special place it is. The open exhange of ideas and why we did what we di on our cars. The our cars is the important part of the sentnence because we all build them the way we want to and that is cool with everybody else on the board.
jim
Just a quick note, i got my new [to me] instrument cluster in the mail from Bill[thank you sir]. It is a beauty and this weekend it will go in. I als now have an extra bezel and I plan to make some changes in it to see how it looks..
jim
2 things.
1, got my dash done and will post some pictures as soon as I have time.
2. heading to springville, Il [about 3 hours] to the RT66 mother load road car show event and plan to meet pinto people and take pictures. yes of course i will post them.
Taking the ranger as the Pinto is close but not ready yet for that type of drive.
later
sorry been a little late on posting this but this is what my dash looked like when i was trying to re-install my instrument cluster. Why???? Because i didn't stop and think. it started with a speedo cable so i just kept taking things apart to get better access until I stopped and thought. I opened the hood and looked at the speedo cable. Since I had changed things around in the engine compartment the speedo cable was rubbinmg so I CLAMPED it to hold it out of the way. Noticed the capitalized word. After I unclamped it was a piece of cake... you would think that after 45 years of this stuff..... :rolleye: Oh well humble pie never hurt anyone. here are the pictures.

Morning, this post is more of a heads up. I am just about to go on vacation for a couple of weeks and part of the trip is to go to my buddy's place in South Carolina where we are going to assyemble a 8" rear. it has a High rib case with a 4:10 gear and new posi traction. Instead of just getting a 5 gallon pail i decided to do it right and get a carrying case to bring the rear center section home. I first ordered a horizontal case from Summit. What a POS. poorly made and didn't fit. I then ordered a vertical case (JAZ) and it is exactly what i need. So save your time and money and order the vertical case.
oh and yes i am really looking forward to my trip......
cool tach, Jim! Is that big blue thing a shift light?
:afro:
Yeah it is a shift light but the neat part is it is movable so you can swing it down and to the right so it does show. It is not the big as the face of the tach is i believe 3 5/8 or something close so the blue light is fairly small and will move so it is hidden. Just better fits the theme of the car and i saw it for $95 i think at summit or jegs.
jim
PS: Just got back from vacation and i have some picturers of the fordmeet i went to. Everything was turboed...great fun anf great people. Might be a bit on the pictures but they are coming.
Well this is my annual fall post. it is that time of the year when i have to put my little pony up on jack stands with a car cover for the winter as i do not have a garage. This year it is interesting as we have gone through a lot of mechanical difficulties and issues but came out with a running car. this also brings me to the point where i am happy and sad at the same time. Sad because i can no longer work or run the car and i will miss her. On the other hand i know that in about 4 months or so i will be able to start collecting all the parts for next year using my income tax refund check.
The goal for next year is simple and that is to complete the mechanical part of this ride. one i want to make it a good driver and two i want to get started on the rest of the car as the mechanical part has taken waaaay too long.
This is the plan:
Engine:
1. I plan to have the head gone over by JD Larramme with a basic port and cleanup, possible bigger valves and a little bit better street cam.
2. I will modify the intake manifold to better work with the EFI that is going on.
3. I will be adding a complete throttle body EFI kit that is complete with custom burned Prom.
4. Along with the EFI I am taking down the stock fuel tank anf it's issues and replacing it with a 12 gal fuel cell complete with sending unit and fittings. Some people would say that is small but the stock tank is only 13 gals so no loss.
Rear:
1. I have all the parts in hand for a 4:10 gear with a new posi in my high srength center section for my 8" rear.
Trans:
1. If that goes well, the I will put in a V8 C-4 with the new bellhousing.
That basically is the end of the mechanicals except that i will be adding 2" dropped spindles with new steel braided brake lines to drop the front a bit.
So if all that works out I am then going to open up the front of the rear wheel well openings so i can put on 29" tires. How wide i don't know just yet, hopefuly about 10"s.
I know it is a lot and that is why i am looking forward to it. here are a couple of pictures of the Pinto ready for the winter's nap.

take care
jim
Jim seems seasons go by quick any more youll be back on her before you no it. you still need to hand around here with us though. looking forward to seeing her back on the ground soon.
Thanks, I do visit at least once a day to see what is up.... Got to get my daily Pinto fix.
jim
Well it is almost christmas as i write this. Been one hell of a year for me and my pinto. We both have come a long way. Between engines and transmissions and such blowing up I still managed to get it to the car show in the fall in the town just north of here. All things considered pretty cool. but I have to say the best thing that happened was getting it straight that my granddaughter absolutely loves the Pinto and I am going to leave it to here to carry on. I just couldn't be happier.
As for me I would say the most important part is that i am still here. Can't bitch about that. I also got to meeet a lot of new Pinto people and that was real important also. One final point is that for the first time in 5 years I was not in the hospital recovering from some sort of surgury...
But most of all I am looking forward to next year. I am going to finish the car off mechanically so I can start on the rest of the car to make it better. My goals are , fuel cell, fuel injection, new ignition, and hopefully a C4 trans to complete the drive train. At that point it will be a sweet reliable daily driver type car that was built to have fun. Oh yeah I almost forgot my posi 4:10 rear center section...
So to all of you working on your cars keep the faith as it has taken 2 years to get to this point with many more to come I am sure. The best part about this is the journey. Meeting all the Pinto people, looking for parts and such is just a lot of fun and helps keep me sane or as close as I get.
So Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Old school I know but don't forget the reason for the season.
I hope you get all the goodies you have asked for from Santa.
peace,
jim
PS Here is a picture of my baby patentienly waiting till spring to bring the sun, warmth and new parts.
I am getting old , I forgot to mention that I will be putting 2" dropped spindles on the front, Opening up the rear wheel wheels slightly to accomadate bigger tiers and upgrading the alt.
Ok way to medicine :lost:, I also forgot that I will be having the cyl head done with a clean up Port & Polish with a mill job to get the compression up to 9 to 1 and a bigger street cam.
one more time.....

This is not about my pinto but something i picked up because it was just too good to not get. it is a 94 ranger and it came with a 5.0 V8 and a C4 transmission for $800. it is not perfect, actually it is what we call a 20 footer. looks good at 2o feet. Body is good just needs some TLC. glas and interior are good so no complaints.
just sharing.. ;)

PS: Pinto stuff... i justt got a rear window gasket from Frank and i had a rear hatch rubber from Bill so i pull yhr hatch off and clean it down to bare metal and attach my spoiler for real with panel bonding epoxy. I need the rear window pulled to both of these. the list just keeps getting longer.... :read:
Jim,
Nice looking truck for the money. My best friend recently bought a '94 Ranger XLT extended cab 2WD with 2.8L/5 spd. The body on it looks like new and the seats were intact but dirty - cleaned up great. It had to have a new headliner but that was only $142 installed. Truck is amazingly smooth and tight in spite of the fact it has 141,000 miles. He paid $1500 for it and considers it a bargain. Runs a lot cheaper than his Hummer H2, and that was his point in buying it. Has probably already paid for itself in gasoline savings!
Dwayne
Dwayne, I have really noticed how much cheaper it is for parts and stuff than my Pinto. In some cases at 50% less. Unfortunately it has to sit until the Pinto reaches the next stage so i can pass it on to my grand daughter.

yeah it is one of those twin scoll deals without an internal waste gate. A 23T was where it was going. I know of course it won't work on a 302 but maybe it might work on a 331??? :surprised:
Do you have a T3/T4 combo unit?

Good pinto news. I go get my taxes done tonight. when the refund comes in I get to start collecting parts for this year. Can't wait....
jim
Yesterday was one of those special days. I was at my grandaugher's 16th birthday party. I got her a t-shirt from the rocky horror picture show. She was so happy she did a happy dance.
I then pulled out a plain envelope and gave it to her. It had a chicago bears key fob [her team] but on the key fob was a brand new key to pinto. yes it was her key for HERR pinto. After it sunk in what it was, she was so happy she vibrated. Just to see such pure joy made my heart smile.
i also found out that her and here father had already made plans for them to come out and work on the car this year. Beyond a father and daughter deal it will allow them to get to know the the car.
i just couldn't be happier. As if that wasn't enough I got the final ok to start my new aggresive chemo treatment starting thursday coming up.....
Life is good!!!!
AWesome Jim! Rocky Horror Picture Show - what a hoot! Congrats, I think that's great. This is a good time of the year for birthdays, hers was yesterday, mine is TODAY!
Always wishing you well in your struggle. You're gonna be just fine. We'll chat again once my pinball stuff slows down. Cheers!
Chris
Best of luck with that new treatment, Jim. And tell you granddaughter :happy_bday: for all of us!
Dwayne
Jim,
Another thought... why don't you ivite her to join us here at the PCCA? You know she'd be welcome!
Dwayne
that is an excellent idea. I hadn't thought of that....
jim
Jim:
Tell you what - you have been an inspiration out here despite your health issues, and I have enjoyed speaking with you on a few occasions. Mention joining the group to your granddaughter, and if she wants to, I'd be willing to pony up the $20 so she can join. LMK what you think!
Chris
is that what it costs to join?? Been so long i forgot.
yes jim its 20 dollars for teh charter membership and congrats to the granddaughter on the pinto ownership and being 16
Let me know Jim, offer still stands.
Chris
thank you i will talk with her and see what she wants to do. i will pass on the congrates of her birthday and pinto ownership.
BTW: here name is Kris.....
Well I think i should start with the good news, I just went through a new type of chemo and that went well but we did have a bit of a problem with a reaction to the Pre-meds that put put me into intensive care. But i am home and all is cool.
Now even better news I just got my tax refund back so I am ordering some more parts and buying a 77 Rallye. I will be taking most of the interior but it drives good with a 4 spd and has the rallye wheels. Anybody wants the rest of the deal when i am done I would like to get $300. for the car and i will through in the rallye wheels too. Word of caution it does have front floor rot and maybe some into the front frame rails but a good drive train.
Anyway i am excited about starting the new year and getting this car mechanically done.
peace
jim
Ahhh the excitement of buying parts. I just ordered the fuel cell and mounting kit. I have made arraignments to have the new 8" center section put together and made arraignments to have my cylinder head done. Of course this is tempered by the fact there i still snow on the ground and i have an "outdoor" garage but i will be getting warmer soon enough and i will be ready to go.
peace
jim
PS: I have decided to mount the fuel cell in the hatch but will have a steel cage around it with aluminum sheeting to seal it off and protect it from that pass area. The actual fuel and return lines will be out the bottom and protected from hitting anything underneath. Only the venting and the actual fill will be above the floor and of course the sending unit.
I know a flurry of posts but here is the latest update. I also ordered my 2" dropped spindles for the front plus some longer stainless front brake lines from speedway. They are good people there and a good place to look for parts.
Anyway the story goes that this dropped spindle setup was originally designed for the 11" brake conversion but was found to work just fine if you want to keep the 9" brakes. I do because they are new. It will require some clearencing on the brake caliper but nothing special. What is a little clearencing when the rest of car has all custom parts anyway??????
peace
jim
Be sure to take lots of good pictures as you do the conversion!
Mike
I will do my best but it will be done up in my buddy's shop so I can't promise.
peace
jim
Jim:
Are those stainless steel brake lines from Speedway pre-bent, or are you (or your buddy) bending them as you install? I ask because I have my motor out and it's time to replace some lousy lines with better ones myself. Thanks!
Chris
these are the flexable lines that are lined with teflon. when nthey come in I will take pictures and post them for you. Not cheap but a good deal and stronger than the factory rubber. i think it was $49 for the pair. Details to follow.
peace
jim
Outstanding Jim, many thanks, hope all is well your way. I'll get back "online" with you after my pinball stuff is over.
BTW - Did you speak with Kris about joining PCCA?
I sent her an e-amil but she is an active 15/16 teen. i will follow up shortly.
Take care of your business and when you are done we will get together. I am doing better just time i think..
Good news, I had christmas in february. My dropped spindels arrived along with the braided brake lines. nice pieces and i will try to get some pictures to day and post.

Just read my last post here, sorry about that, the meds get a little rough sometimes....
Anyway a post of good news to all like me who are waiting for the sun so we can go back to work on our cars. It was in the high 40's today and wet which means the snow on the ground is going away. When the snow is all gone it won't be long!!!!!
hang in.

Some good news and progress. I was over at my buddy's shop dropping off the new center section to get built with the posi and 4:10 gears. That should make the Pinto be a bit quicker about town. [it's natural habitat]
While i was there he showed me his latest project. It was called the BOSS 600. it is a 600inch big block ford 460 based motor with the latest in cylinder heads. These are the new reproductions from Jon Kasse called Boss 9 heads. Just works of art and good for about another 150hp over the wedge heads. This is an alky injected motor and should produce 1300 hp. yeah i know it is not a Pinto but can you imagine that in a Pinto??? :hypno:
(http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l66/hellfirejim/BOSS600/BOSS600019.jpg) Yes it is a Hemi!
Last bit of Pinto news, i ordered all the fittings for the fuel cell so when it gets warm enough I will be able to get started.....

jim
Glad to hear that you're doing better and that the weather is beginning to cooperate.
Mike
Thanks Mike,
I am not doing to bad. Got another procedure thursday [18th] but i expect this to go much smoother.
The weather is slowly getting warmer so i can start soon as the temp got upto almost 60.
By the time it gets warm the parts that I ordered should be here and i can start the fuel cell conversion which will be the first thing I do or at least that is the plan.
jim
Jim,
Having a plan is a good thing!
Will keep you in our thoughts and prayers as you face this latest procedure.
Hang in there!
Dwayne
Well I am back, somewhat. They tried but missed again. another couple of days in intensive care. But i have escaped home and the good news is that I don't think there is any more for a few months.... One can hope.
By this weekend the rear will be at the shop setting it up. I got word that the fittinggs i ordered for the fuel cell are in and need to be picked up.
Now we just wait for it to get warmer so i can actually go outside and do something. of course i also have to heal too.
Hang in all, we will get there.
jim
Hey Jim, good to hear your out and feeling better. Cant wait to see all that cool stuff installed on your car. Will be waiting on pix.
Jim,
Glad you're back... even if only "somewhat"! Hang in there, buddy!
Dwayne
Thanks guys i appreciate it. I can't wait to get started. But honestly I really can't wait to get further out from the procedure and i can get back to semi normal. Once i catch up with the fatigue then i will back on track.
of course getting warmer won't hurt either....
I stopped by after therapy and picked up my fuel hose and fittings for the fuel cell. BTW: My therapist said I was still certifiable. Good thing as i still would like to fit in here.... :showback:
While I was at my buddys race shop we were talking about my other project and he gave me a early large iron 351 windsor block. these are really rare. That is going to be the bases for 408 motor going into the Ranger.
So now we just wait untill it gets warm enough to start working. 22 degreess this am.

Simply amazing and very humbling...... :o :embarassed: 8)

Some good news. Saturday will not be the best but sunday it should be sunny and about 70 degrees. Looks like i get to start working on the Pinto.........
Finally I have something to post. I have a 4 bl carb, electric fuel pump and a Holley fuel reg. Commonly called a POS. It needs to hold a pressure reading and it drifts off. It looks like this:
This has caused me much aggravation as it causes carb problems. When right, this carb feels just like fuel injection. However I just got tired of "messing" with it and bit the bullet and bought a quality Fuel reg at about 3 times the price of that cheap POS. This is what it looks like:
Not fully installed as I ran out of energy and needed a couple of bolts to finish the install. Seems energy is on back order around here...
Here is a link to the other pictures. if it is nice enough this weekend I will finish the install and fire her up from her winter nap....

jim
Glad to hear you will be able to get back at it soon, Jim. It's been warm here but I have been lazy (not really). Got through the pinball show and have been up to my eyeballs in board work since. Well, it's a way to make money to put towards the car, so I shouldn't complain. Plan to get back on the car myself this weekend; gotta finish prep for the inner fender installation.
Sorry I have been out of touch.
Chris
No problem chris as my world has not been particularly stable either. I just got my computer back [bad mother board] and I will post up some more pictures shortly.
jim
I know it has been a while for me posting but a bunch of stuff has gotten in the way. First a mother board on my computer went out and then blew a rear wheel cyclinder on my truck. Serious hits on my car money. But it was put back in prospective when I got my last blood test and the cancer activity was cut in half. maybe, just maybe this new stuff is working.....
So here is the final picture of the new fuel regulartor. I got a little carried away and it only was about 2 1/2 times as expensive as the POS holley unit. I installed it and after sitting all winter hit the gas pedal twice and it started right up. This carb does not have a choke but it was still idling sweet. You never get puinished for buying good parts.

Jim: Great to hear the good news about your health!
Keep it up (health & Pinto)!
Mike
Sometimes you get so into your project that you don't see the simplest solution. I am in the process of installing a fuel cell. I thought that I would need to cover the spare tire well so there is enough room for the cell to sit flat. So i preceded to take quite a while and make a circular pattern to fill in the top of the wheel well.
Then I was talking to someone about this and they said, "why don't you just put in a flat plate and be done with it. Duh!!! Sometimes....
So this weekend i am measuring for the piece i need and then I will go to our local scrap yard which allows walk abouts on saturday mornings and find the piece that I need. They only charge by the pound on saturdays. i have gotten many pieces from there.
On to the next adventure.
peace
jim
I guess I have been away too long from my scrap yard. They no longer allow people in because of theft and ins. Bummer....
Some good news. I went and picked up my new 8" center section Saturday. it was an hours drive each way but worth it. In the guys smalll transmission shop he had a home made trans dyno. As luck would have it he was testing a trans and i got to watch. seriously cool. He had a lot of neat carsin the shop. Everything from early mustang to a chevelle to a hemi cuda [not stock] to a drag race car sporting a 638" Big block motor.
So it is back home and the paint is drying. With any luck it will be installed soon and it should really transform the car. I went from a 3:08 open rear to a 4:10 posi. Remember this is just an around town toy.
peace
jim
PS: I also plan to get he 2" dropped spindles installed at the same time. The combination of the two items should make a difference in the "attitude" of the car.
This is an off topic post so if you want stop now no problem.
I went to the first Sonic Cruise on monday night. Had a good turn out for the first time. The Sonic people were smiling. There only problem now is room. Here is the link to some pictures I took. As soon as I can i wll bring the Pinto.

Edited5/27/10 There are Pictures of a Pinto.
Looks like a nice cruise-in! Does that Pinto belong to anyone from here? I especially like the Rambler convertible and the Edsel.
Dwayne
No that belongs to my chassis guy. the engine if you noticed is a BOSS 429 style engine. However it is 600 cu in and makes well over 1100 hp. This is normally an 8 second car. The last time it was at the track it tripped the 1/8 th mile timing lights with the BACK tires. Yes it was skying. it normally carries the front wheels but this new motor has a lot more torque......
But he is a Pinto guy and has been through many years. It start as the usual 302 swap and then went through many variations of small blocks [some turbo] to the present big block ford. The motor is a work of art.
So what do you know the last post was Pinto related......

Everybody stand back, presenting my new garage with the blue roof :hypno:
Ok a little more serious now. I was going to put the old front bumper back on the Pinto today. When I started to do it I just couldn't....So i went back into the shed and pulled out a 1977 aluminum front bumper. I know that everybody says they don't fit but being a hard head I figured I would try it myself. Guess what? they fit!!!
I took off the big steel beam from the car and bolted the aluminum bumper to the front mounts with 4 5/16th bolts. It is not going anywhere as the factory only used 6 bolts for a package easily weighing 40lbs. I am not worried.
This picture shows the only thing i added was a thick washer.
I just trimmed the fil panel and it was done. I used the stock mounting points for the bumper and the flat pads for the bumper shocks.
This is the results. The good thing is I have a 77 parts car that has very good bumpers. :lol:Here is a link to the rest of the pictures.

Looks like a good fit to me!
Dwayne
yeah i like it. Now i have to do the back. the part i like is it gets rid of close to 75-80 lbs of weight at the extreme end of the car.
not a whole lot to report as it has been raining continiously. I did get the piece of metal I needed to mount the fuel cell. I just have to get it fitted and welded in. I am also going to try and get the rear bumper mounted also but more rain is scheduled. Damn i wish i had a garage......
On the good news My grand daughter is coming out this weekend and the first thing out of her mouth was can she drive the Pinto. She just got her learners permit. I figure why not, it is her car.

Dueto a family emergency my son-in-law is spending this month with me so i put him to work. We went up to the 77 parts car and stripped it of interior parts and bumpers. Now I just have to get it installed. i will take pictures of what is happening but I can tell you that i got the good sporty steering column complete. going to be a major change in appearance.
more to come shortly.

first i want to acknowledge that the views for this little thread are now over 20,ooo. amazing, simply amazing.
Well it has been an interesting weekend. I put the pony back down on all fours to drive it before my granddaughter came out. it wouldn't start. no fuel pressure. The first thing I did was add some gas. Fuel gauge not working. Then I starting goin back through the fuel system to see where there was fuel and when I got to the rubber line between the metal tank fuel line and the fuel pump I discovered that all the rubber hoses had been changed before, this was the only one not changed. :hypno: yeah I don' have answer for that either. anyway I fixed it and it started but just didn't run right. It wouldn't clear itself out. I first checked the plug and the coil but no change. I then went to my 77 parts car and stole the spark plug wires and that fixed it. this is of course dodging rain drops and 90% humitity. Runs better now.

jim
As long term projects go this one has stayed pretty close to what i started with the exception of the final turn of events with my grand daughter. Because of that I have made some mid-course adjustments to get the car ready for her. It now appears that I need to make another adjustment and that is in the carb. It looks like i am switching to a 2barrel carb sometime soon. a lot of reasons but basically to improve the drivability of the car for her.
more when it happens.

jim
Ok here is the more as it happened this weekend. I adapted the adapter to fit and mounted the carb. I had to make a new linkage mount. it is made but not made 'pretty' yet. You can see a copper tube and that is to extend the vacuum hose for the mod valve. everything is temp mount. it starts fine but it has a leaking accel pump diaphram from sitting. As soon as i get that fixed it should be fine.
here is the link to all the pictures.
http://s93.photobucket.com/albums/l66/hellfirejim/Pinto%20Carb/ (http://s93.photobucket.com/albums/l66/hellfirejim/Pinto%20Carb/)
PS: I know they made aftermaket air cleaner for the 5200 carb, anybody got a line on one?????
When i put it back together it would barely idle and ran rough. I did the trick of spraying around the base of the carb and sure enough it changed so i had a vacuum leak. Took it back apart, resealed it and put it back together. Much better but still had the bog when I hit the accel. I replace the accel pump diaphram and that helped a little but it still wasn't right.
The main deal was I couldn't see the accel pump shot. So I pulled the carb back off and tore into it. Now keep in mind I am working with a holley 2brl built for Ford and is progressive. I am not the smartest guy when it comes to carbs and I had never seen the inside of this one. So I pulled the top off and I finally got the air to blow through the feed holes to the accel pump. I had a feeling that it was not as simple as that so I pulled off the sqirters and tried to blow throw them and couldn't. As fate would have it I still had the carb from my 75 and the squirters worked well. Anyway I put it all back together and it started and ran like it should except is was rough. Number one header pipe was not as hot as the rest so I pulled number one plug and it had not been firing. I had another old set of spark plug wires and I grabbed one and check for resistance. Put it on and it smoothed out. Now it is responsive, idles clean and in gear it idles at 800rpm.
Most of this was just basic mechanics and a little bit on knowledge of carbs along with a whole lot of luck. :amazed: BUT I got it done and it works. Now i have to order the air cleaner for it. it will cost $16 plus shipping.
I am glad I didn't have to pay somebody to do this.

jim
Here is the last installment on the great carb swap. I painted the accel cable bracket and made a new copper vacuum line for the trans with 2 adel clamps to hold it. i contacted Vee Dub Parts Unlimited [vwparts.net] and ordered an EMPI air cleaner 1 3/4 inches tall. It is not an exact fit but really close I had to use longer bolts and nylocks. It also has a hole and fitting [included] for the pcv hose which I am not using as I use another system.
Anyway it is on, clears the hood and looks great.
jim
PS: they have taller air filters also.

Jim,
Just wanted to say you are doing an awesome job! Took me two days to read all this (at work between working).
You are a real inspiration. I have a niece who is now coming up on 6 years since they found a tumor in the back of her head(medulla blastoma or something, I don't remember) and she is 5 years cancer free and starting high school. So I have some clue how hard it must be for you at times.
Russ
Thanks russ,
This car has been a god send. Whenever it gets bad I just go out and work on the car as there is always something to do. it takes my head to another place if only for a few hours.
Life isn't always easy but it most definately is what you make of it. keep at it.

Jim,
the car is really coming along! I have been following along on your updates on the car & I am impressed. I wish I had your motivation to get working on my car, so it would be done, but I don't
matt,
I understand how you feel as there are times i don't even want to look at it. What i have done is make a list of what i want to do and when I go out there I pick something off the list [big or small] and just work on it till i am tired. some days it may only be a half an hour. other days it could be most of the day, just depends. If you follow that, then sooner or later you start accomplishing things and that motivates you to keep going.
Anyway it works for me. Good luck with your car.
peace
jim
Jim:
Glad to see you chugging along and keeping up. I >TITALLY< relate to "not even wanting to look at it", good grief, some days I am SO overwhelmed, and with Summer temperatures at 100+, I could care less. This Fall promises to be active.
Stay well Jim, thanks for keeping us on top of your progress.

today's post is going to be a little different. Not your normal i did this stuff but perhaps some insight I can share with those just starting on this journey of Pintodom....i won't be offended if you just move on.
To those of you still left the best way to explain this is a line from a kenny rogers song, "You got to know when to fold them". No I am not done with the Pinto but one of the projects. i replaced my front bumper with a 77 aluminum bumper and it was a piece of cake. the rear is proving to be awhole different matter. The first thing I did wrong was pull off the rear bumper before i had the next bumper ready to go. this is a good lesson to remember.
I have been trying to make pieces to fit but it is a hard deal particularly with the heat we have been experiencing. Yesterday I decided enough was enough and I was going to put the stock bumper back on. i got everything ready and this am early 7:30. I was out back trying to juggle the 40lb bumper into place with a floor jack. I wasn't doing too good of a job. I noticed across the street that a couple of guys were setting up to trim some trees behind the store so i walked over and asked if they would mind helping me to jocky it into place. No problem. I got the bolts started in a couple of minutes and then finished installing the bumper.
The next thing I did was probably the most important, i took it out for a drive to nowhere. yes i just took it out and enjoyed the car. There is something special about driving our little cars. good for the head.
So what did we learn? first before you tear it apart be sure that the new piece is ready to go if possible. Unless it is a saftety issue do what will give the most bang for the effort. A lot of small things will sometimes give you more satisfaction than one major. I know this is not always possible but when you can it is a good policy to follow. probably the best advice is not to keep them torn down for too long as driving them is still the best part even though they are not finished.
So hang in there and do what you can but remember we are doing this so we can enjoy the pleasure of driving them.
Ok enough for now, i promise the next time i will have something else done....
Peace
jim
Sounds like good advice to me, Jim. I think sometimes people get so caught up in the work, that they forget the goal of actually driving and enjoying the car!
Thanks for sharing!

We are supposed to be able to drive these things?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
That's a good one guys. You really had me going there for a minute.

I have to back off the Pinto work for a while as I am going to try a new procedure. I know tha sounds like a bad thing but in reality it is not because if this procedure works as advertised then it will have a very positive affect on the outcome of the my war.
Not getting excited as i have been down that road before. We shall see but there is hope after over 5 years of this stuff.

today I have to follow my own advice. I really didn't want to work on the car this weekend. it was just one of those weekends but as I have said before that even if you don't really want to work on it, try and do something even if it is small. So today I installed the new [to me] black sunvisors aloong with a new [to me] emergency brake cover. not much as i said but at least i got it done and off the list.

Jim, I have been there many times over.
I agree with you just getting something small. It's amazing that something as simple as sunvisors & ebrake cover can be so fulfilling.
Posts in two parts today. First the Pinto stuff for those who are not interested in the second part and that is totally cool.
I have decided that I HAVE to get the fuel cell done before anything else. So I re-started the work on it. I have the piece of sheet metal cut out in the basic shape and have just started to get it ready. I have notched out where it fits around the back pass roll bar support. Since i allready had made a template for the fuel cell I put it into place and simply painted where the hole is for the sump to fit through. I have the four corners drilled and unibit holed so the next step is to cut out the whole where the tank sump goes. i will get it tack welded to start with and then I will cut the pinto flooring for the lines to pass through. However I will have to wait till I can get the new license plate stickers. just came due at the wrong time. :reek:
The second part is good news and that is the radition is on its way and I will get my next [and some say final] treatment on thursday late afternoon. Since I won't be transportable until after 9pm they said i will just stay overnight and go home in the morning. Then the maddening part is I will have to wait a month for the radiation to do it's stuff and then get a scan to check it out and a visit to the doc to see what we are going to do next. The best part is I have been off general chemo since march and that helps reduce the side effects. I don't know what the side effects will be but it surely can't be anyworse than last time and in fact they said it should be a lot easier.
This is a very good thing. How much of a good thing we shall see but as long as the good lord is willing to keep going so will I. More news as it happens.
peace ;)
jim
Jim,
Glad to hear you are working on the Pinto again!
Am especially happy to hear the health-related good news. Hang in there and NEVER give up!
Dwayne
Jim,
Great news on the Pinto, but even greater news on the chemo. We're all pullin for ya man!
Just a quick note to let you know that the procedure went well. I am having to take a few days off just to get back to ground zero but all in all it is doable. it is killing me not to be able to work on getting the fuel cell in but it will come.
peace
jim
Jim,
glad to hear the procedure is going well. We're all pulling for ya!
Back in the saddle again and working on the Pinto though at a very reduced pace. This radiation stuff really kills all your momentum.
As last noted I had cut out the corners on the 16 gauge base plate and then took it up my buddy's shop where he cut out the sump hole. We discussed it and we came to the conclusion that the hole would be too tight around the sump and just recut it a "tad" large. Scientific measurement.... :read:
I brought it home and placed 4 stacks of car mags to get the base plate up enough and I dropped in the fuel cell. I then placed the hold down clamps in place and marked where i needed to drill the holes for the bolts. I drilled the holes {thank the person who invented the uni-bit] and went and got bolts, lock washers, regular washers and nuts. We welded the washers and nuts to the underside of the base plate. Reason for the regular washers was to spread out the pulling load from the clamps. This is what you see in the first picture.
The next step is to create and place under the base plate are two bridge supports just to be sure that there is no movement while going down the road. All of this is fitted into the spare tire well.
This pickture just shows the fuel cell sitting in place.
Got a lot more to do but you get the picture. Also for those of you concerned with the cell just sitting there, it will be surrounded by a steel cage and aluminum sheet sealing it from the passenger compartment and adding another level of protection.
peace
jim
Just a short note. I worked on making the bridge fuel cell supports today. Was a cross between fabrication and blacksmithing. One is ready and the second one is close. I hope to have it ready tomorrow in the am. The final step is the vertical supprts but that should be fairly easy deal. This whole deal is going to setup so it can be unbolted and removed if it was ever wanted to be returned back to stock. Can't think of a single reason for it to be stock but you never know.
Hopefully I will be able to get it done tomorrow, the old body just ain't what it used to be but I am trying.

Sorry guys but I tried but it was simply not going to happen. A combination of just to hot and a beatup body said no. So now i wait till probably friday due to heat and then rain. Really want to get this done......getting close.

You're smart to stay out of the heat - it isn't worth it. Friday will be here before you know it! Here's wishing you a great week!
Dwayne
Well it is good news and not so good news. I have nearly completed the suport for the new fuell cell. I have all the pieces made and even got a couple of spot welds done. So all i need is to "clean" them up and paint them. I also scored some remmants of vinyl to use as a padding and metal to metal insulator for about $4.
now for the frustrating news. I was simply going to bolt the support frame in but i realized that some of the bolts are not accessable from the back side due to crossmembers. Simple solution is to use nut-certs in the sheet metal and just bolt it together. I went all over town to try and fine them. Most looked at me like i had ten heads. One even said they didn't have it even though they admitted they didn't know what i was talking about. :showback:
So I have one more stop before doc appointment and then on to the internet to see if i can find what I need. it is a 5/16 thread nutcert.
Still the good news is that the major fabrication is done and now once the nut-certs are in play it will be a matter of cleaning and bolting together. Also a major will be to remove the old gas tank and all the associated crap and have a clean installation.

Update on the Pinto and me
First the Pinto. I found the nutserts but now i need to go buy an installation tool. the are really proud of them. Close to $100. It seems that when you get about 1/4 inch they get exspensive. of course i find this out after making everthing 5/16 size.....
Work stops on the Pinto until next week as it is time for a small vacation to Houston for a few days. Be back working on it next week.
About me. The Doc was really happy with the results so far. The scans show that the cells are in necrois [sp] which means they are dieing. What is important is that this usually shows at about 60 days out no 30 days out. so they are happy and my blood test for cancer activity fell in half. so life os pretty good.

What is important is that this usually shows at about 60 days out no 30 days out. so they are happy and my blood test for cancer activity fell in half. so life os pretty good.

With news like that life is very good I'd have to say.
Jim,
Glad to hear the treatments are working. How encouraging! Enjoy your vacation trip!
Dwayne
Vacation was great and of course too short. I also got some more good news on the health front. My blood test for liver functions came back normal. Why is this good news? Because in all the years they have been doing this NOBODY has ever come back with a normal test, they are all elevated. Life is good.
Ok to Pinto stuff. I need an installation tool for a 5/16th nutsert. Anybody got any ideas????? I need to install the nutserts for the installation of the fuel cell. The tools I have found were a hundred dollars and I need to do 4 nutserts.... Anybody have one I can borrow????
OBTW: I sold my other project 94 ranger to concentrate soley on the pinto to get it done....

Jim,
Welcome back from vacation (hope you had a great time) and congratulations on the blood test results. That is cause for celebration!!!
Sorry I don't have the tool you need. If I did, you'd be welcome to borrow it. Maybe someone here will be able to help you out. Hope so anyway.
Take care!

Well just to prove the old adge that nothing is as easy as it looks. i had the rear center section for my 8" done professionally and we finally got to put it in. I thought it was going to be a slam dunk but no. when we road tested the car there is a rythmic sound in the rear. We think it is the spider gears, but not sure. so out comes the new rear gear and in goes the old gear. what waste of money i don't have. I will take the rear back to the people who did it and we shall see what happens.
I guess progress is not always forward....

Ain't that the truth?!?!?
Dwayne
If your mechanic is a stand up guy he should go through the gears again for free. I had a set of gears in my Duster that had a rythem to 'em for years. Some gears are just a little off but they will last forever.
Agreed, I am pretty sure that will happen with the gears and I will return them as soon as my world slows down a little. However the real issues is the cost of R&R the rear gears twice has killed the budget for this year. I am real close to putting it up for the winter. maye even next weekend.
Such is how it goes sometimes, there is alwyas next year........ :-\

Well it is that time again as I just put the Pinto up on stands and covered for the winter. Seems like I spun my wheels alot this year and didn't get much done. Like I said there is always next year.
Just a teaser and NOT a Pinto but something i just picked up. it is a 1950 Ford F2 [3/4 ton] pickup that is mounted on a 1986 S-10 chassis that has had a V8 conversion. Absolutely a ball to drive. it's main purpose in life besides putting a smile on my face is to drive it. Nothing fancy just a driver. I drove it back 175 miles when i bought it. Got lots of edges which is all the better as i can then make it mine.

Now to tie it back into the Pinto, I can be driving the truck while i work on the Pinto so i won't get frustrated when i am working. But you thought I couldn't tie it back together with the Pinto. :drunk:

Interesting... I wouldn't have thought a truck as beefy as a 1950 Ford F2 would fit on a Chevy S-10 chassis. Looks like it would be a fun vehicle to drive and be seen in! Enjoy!

Hi all. I just wanted to let you know that I am alive. Been going through more chemo for the last 3 months and have been away from it all. As some of you know I work outside so it hasn't really changed much except it is minus 4 right now with a wind chill of minus 25 degrees.
The Pinto is all covered and awaiting spring as I am too.
take care

And if you're as smart as I think you are, you'll STAY covered!
Glad to know you are still kickin'. Hang in there, Spring is just around the corner!
Dwayne
Thanks for the update Jim
I am sure everyone agrees with me when I say we are all glad to hear you're still kickin. You will beat this, as you have a great attitude & that is a majority of recovery. Here's hoping things keep going well & you're able to get back to the project noce it warms up
Hey Jim, good to hear from you, been away for a while so I'm catching up on old posts! Love the ol' F2!!
Thanks all I appreciate the thoughts.... It is snowing...... again!!!
That old F2 has moved to the top of the list to get the front end wiring done before spring. Then at that point it becomes a driver only and I can get back to working on the Pinto. In case you are wondering, a friend who has a body shop offered the space to work on it this winter. Haven't been able to do much but I am getting there.
it's job will be the stress reliever from the Pinto... LOL
