I was wanting some advice on what rear end to get (8" or 9") and what ratio would be best. If I do this project it will have a 351cleveland with a c6 tranny. I would be doing a lot of highway driving so I would like to try to keep the rpm's down. Any advice would be appreciated.
For the rear: How much money do you want to spend?
An 8" is very durable and good used ones that will bolt in are around $150. (give or take) where there are NO 9" rears that will 'bolt in'.
I would stay around 3.00 for the gears. My V8 car had 3.45's and it did not like the highway. 3.00's are still OK for me (215-60-14's), but if I need to replace them for some reason I am going to 2.79's.
Plan to do major work to the tunnel to get that C6 tranny in there, the C4 is tight. I installed a kick down cable kit (like you will need), and to do that took some tweeking of the tunnel and that thing is small.
Bill
I agree with Bill, the C6 is major work...i'd do a C4

Actually, the 9" rear from a 1957-59 Ford or Edsel and 1963-65 Hi Po 289 Fairlane, Mustang or Comet bolts in quite nicely.

4 lug on 4.25" with no modifications needed to the housing or shock plates?
Bill
nobody said anything about keeping it 4 lug and info on a 8 OR 9 inch was the question. besides theres plenty of rims that will use the dog dish caps if you needed to keep it stock looking.

Nobody said anything about him wanting to change it either.
He asked for opinions, so I mentioned that the
ONLY rear (of those two) that will
"BOLT IN" (meaning no mod.s at all) is an 8".
Yes, others can be made to fit, BUT that is not a
"BOLT IN" like
I was talking about.
