Title: C4 help
Post by: mrpinto on July 17, 2007, 05:40:24 PM
I am currently getting my transmission rebuilt, and was told by the mechanic that I need a piece from another C4 (if I can find one) I think he said it was the throttle something lever. It's mounted on the side and goes in above the valve body somewhere. For the life of me I can't remember what he called it! ???

Does anyone know what this is and what it does? I have been thinking about getting the transmission built with a full manual valve body, and I have been told if I do, I won't need this part. Are they full of it, or is this true?

Thanks

"Kickdown" maybe?

If so, it makes the tranny down-shift when you go WOT within pre-set speed ranges.

Keep in mind that a "Pinto" C4 is not the same as "other" C4's. They have less clutches and a different part to hold them. See what it would cost to convert it, it will make it MUCH more durable.

Also, if you have the money, get a rebuilt T/C in place of having the old one 'flushed'. Those tend to wear because Ford did not weld the fins, they just folded them over in the slots and they work loose over time. Rebuilt ones and new ones are normally welded or brazed in those areas, not to mention that they are CLEAN (the MOST important thing). The last thing you want is for the T/C to grenade, putting a bunch of junk in the tranny and cooler. Just the fins rubbing will put metal into the tranny, T/C, cooler, and lines (BTW: get a new radiatior and lines too).

(a friend of mine had his blown up Jeep tranny re-built, but the shop did not replace the cooler or lines; boom 1100 miles later. the cause was all the junk that was left from last time)

This isn't a Pinto C4, not 100% sure what it was donated from, possibly a Maverick. The whole transmission is being rebuilt, along with a new TC, cooler rad and lines.

The part I'm referring to bolts from the outside, and goes through the side, just above the valve body and has a lever type thing attached to it. Not exactly sure what it does, but the mechanic told me it can't run without it, or the transmission will burn out.
