Does anyone know of if a 13" painted wheel with poverty caps were available for the Pinto? If so, does anyone have pics? Better yet, does anyone have the poverty caps?
I love the look of painted wheels and poverty caps, it assists with the sleeper look I am pursuing. My 72 wagon, when finished, will be a turbocharged, bright white wood grain clad, black steel wheel with poverty caps beast from the nether-regions . A Pinto will make the PERFECT sleeper- the chicks think its cute, the unknowing masses think its a joke/death-trap, and I think posi burnouts laid when I dust a hemi-powered "whatever" is the cutest.
I like that look also. I know they also call those center hub caps "doggie dish caps". Mopar used them alot on their muscle cars. Back in the late 1970s I had a Mustang II and I used to take off my factory aluminum slotted wheels and put on my black steel wheels with doggie dish hub caps. They were steel and I do believe that they said Ford Motor Company on them, trimmed with black paint.
Redeless1, As far as wheels if you can come across the "Poverty Caps" I would try to find 4 of the 14" plain black steel rims from a Ford Fairmont. They are 4 lug and you could use 215/60R 14 tires on them and it would look sweet and give you more rubber on the street. You might even try 225 or 235/60s on the rear wheels. Good luck, and if you do it, post some photos for us. Cobrabob.
i had those on my '71. later i bought a new set & had new 7" wide rims put on the stock centers with a 1" negative offset. (4" back spacing for those preferring the more modern lingo). i liked the look
Now are you looking for the stock Pinto style, or just any 'poverty' hubcaps? There are some different sizes, so be aware of that. I know the ones that used to be on my 69 F100 (15" wheels) will fit the stock steelies (14" wheels) on my 67 Mustang, but WILL NOT fit the 13" Pinto wheels. Conversely, the Pinto hubcaps WILL NOT fit the 14 or 15 inch wheels. I am not sure about the 14" Fairmont wheels, as I have never tried them. Also, the early 80's Mustangs used 14" steel wheels to clear the larger calipers, and, as you may know, they are the same lug pattern (4 x 4.25") as our Pintos. The ones that fit my truck and Mustang are 10 1/2 inches across the back. I am not sure what diameter the Pinto ones were. I have some off of my 73, but they are pretty beat up and I can't remember if I had all four or only three of them.
I don't remember where I got the first pic, but this car has the stock Pinto poverty caps. The second pic is what the caps on my truck looked like. 1968 Mustang poverty caps look similar, but have a horse with three bars behind it (like the fender emblems from back then) instead of the Ford crest.
I have some FoMoCo poverty/dog dish caps off my old 85 PI Vic, but being for a 15" wheel they are more like wheel covers for the 13".
As for converting to the 14" wheel, that may be down the road, as I am sure the lack-luster 6.75 rear won't take much turbo abuse. But, for now, I won't change from 13" simply because of final drive ratio. I have a 3.55 rear, and this little NA 2.0 needs all she can get. A 14" wheel will probably happen after an 8" or 9" rear goes in, as gear selection opens up.
Obviously, and unfortunately, the poverty cap Pinto is a rarity- BUMMER!
On the forum page, scroll down to "your pintos" then down to "my car" started by "1975 pinto".
The picture on the post is a 75 Pinto with the hub caps you are asking about. These were not
common back in the day and will be hard to find now but not impossible.
there was a 3:73 ratio gear set available on the early 1600 pintos. if you stay with the 13" tire/wheel combo i personally don't think you will hace any problem with the stock rear as long as you maintain it well
Found this on the bay:

If you can find a 72 sales brochure there is a picture of a yellow Pinto with "poverty" caps and yellow rims.

this?
Those are it. The wheels are painted to match the color of the car.

Those are also the "Poverty or Dog Dish" caps which I used on my '76 Cobra II back in the 70s and early 80s. Those wheels were my Winter set. They were on stock black 13 inch steel wheels with radial snow tires on the back and regular radials up front. I even had them mounted white walls out on a Cobra !!
my car came w/black rims and medium lime yellow paint.
