Title: Experimental shade tree 2.0 intake
Post by: Redeless1 on July 06, 2007, 06:58:43 AM
I don't know if any of you have done this before, but I have "discovered" something interesting that may score me a Holley 2bbl intake or 4bbl intake (with adapter) out of my stock 2.0 intake. Here is the lowdown-
A 2.0 engine core I recently purchased came with what the owner said was the original carb. Upon closer inspection an EGR plate and valve was attached to an E1 prefix carb tag. It obviously was a 2.3 smog carb.
The egr valve and spacer plate unbolts from the carb.
The spacer plate bolts to the 2.3 intake with the same pattern as a 2100 Motorcraft 2bbl, which is the same pattern as a 350-500cfm Holley.
I have drilled out the threaded stud bosses for the 5200 in order that a soon to be countersunk bolts will seat the plate in place of the original 2.0 studs for the 5200 carb. Using a standard 5200 gasket between this plate and the intake will seal it fine.
The plate will need to be mounted upside-down, this exposes smog pathways cast into the plate, and will allow for a countersunk bolt provision, which must be made. The egr spacer plate will need to be ground out for the necessary throttle bore dimensions. This will require one of the thick 2100 carb gaskets to seal, or- a solid phenolic plastic spacer plate (and thin paper 2100 gaskets) used on the 7200 variable venturi police package 351Ws- which I just happen to have laying around.
The next step will be to cut the cast provision for the egr off and plug the hole (anyone got any JB weld).
Once this is done a standard Motorcraft 2100 or Holley 350-500cfm carb will bolt into place.
A new throttle cable/linkage will need to be made up- but that shouldn't be difficult.
I know, it may sound complicated- but it really isn't. I think a nice intake and carb combo can be made without breaking the bank.
Any thoughts out there on this?

Good info.

I almost did that with Connie's car. The 2.3 has the removable EGR plate that has the same pattern for the larger carb. I found a plastic spacer with an "E5.." (ish) part #. We just decided to go EFI turbo. I was looking at how the carb. would be set-up and connected, and all the tuning that I hate doing. I had a manual kick down adapter that I made for the tan car that now has a T-5, and I found a T/C donor....

I plan on going turbo as well, but with the 2.0. More carb will be required, so I figured an experiment with this would be interesting. It may never see the car, as I am still trying to decide on a blow-thru system or a draw-thru set up.
Either way, I just like toying with stuff like this.
