I'm planning on building a 9" rear end for my wagon and wanted to know if anyone has any advise on what to do and what no to do. i plan on shortening the axles myself and welding them back together. thats what a local axle shop told me they would do anyways, so i figured i'd do the work myself and save the money. So if anyway has any tips that would be great!
Thanks,
Matt
:stop: Cut and reweld the axles? If you're going to a 9", you must plan on a #-load of power, the only option (in my opinion) would be to shorten and respline if the taper on the axles allows it. A better bet is to bite the bullet and get aftermarket axles, especially since you'll probably be upgrading from a 28 spline to a 31 or 35 spline setup.
In my earlier days, I thought I could piece together a 9" for a common bowtie product cheaper than just buying one, since there were housings that were the same width.....if aggravation and time has a price I'd have been MUCH better off just going with a Moser or Currie housing package.
