Title: PINTO COMPRESSION FOR A 2,3L
Post by: PintoCDN on June 13, 2007, 03:23:48 PM
Hello,

I checked compression for my 78 Pinto and it is 135-140 lbs. Is it a normal value for that engine as with the oil addition test thru spark-plug holes, comp. raised to 190 lbs.

Thanks.
Jean

135 to 140s a little low.Adding oil and getting a 50 to 60 psi jump indicates it needs to be rebuilt.Your head is sealing but the rings are leaking down.

What will be a normal compression for that engine?

I believe it should be between 175 185 lbs depending on the year.

It's usually more important to look for pressure variation from cylinder to cylinder.  If they are close and you have no oil burning issues it may not need to be rebuilt.   If you add too much oil it can act as a filler, not only a sealer which can raise the compression ratio.
