Title: Two Liter Mikuni Side Drafts
Post by: UltimatePinto on June 12, 2007, 12:15:45 PM
Have just purchased a set of Mikuni side drafts for my 2000cc from another member of this forum.

Anybody have any experience setting these up?

Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Al

I've never worked on one and you probably already know about Esslinger in Cal. They sell that set up so maybe they can help you out with some info. Good luck!

Thanx,

Looks as though I'll be in touch with Esslinger anyway as I did not get any instructions or details for the units from the person I purchased them from.

Am almost certain though that the # 4 cylinder unit will have issues occupying the same space as the master cylinder for the brake system.

Will cross that bridge when I start putting my Runabout together again.

UltimatePinto,
Yes, I have quite a bit of Mikuni experience.  Can you post a picture and give me the model numbers?

Will try to get some pics for you this weekend High Horse, and very much appreciate your help.

After taking a quick look, I don't see any type of ID # on them anywhere.

On one side it has Mikuni Corp, Made In Japan in the casting, and on the other there is a sticker that says, " Not For Aircraft Use ".

In all fairness to the person I purchased them from, he did send me a fuel pressure regulator with the units as an extra, and said that they only took about five pounds of fuel pressure. He said that he's having trouble with his scanner and can't get the original papers to me yet.

Besides the master cylinder question, ( 72 Runabout ), my intrest is in how the units are balanced, as far as they can be, to insure as even a fuel distribution to all cylinders as may be possible.

Having said that, the unit they will be feeding is posted somewhere in the forum with pics of it on a dyno. It will sport Schoenfield headers when installed and I would guess that would be where the balance act would come in. The headers being the end part of the equation, as the induction system, valves, and combustion chambers, are pretty much identical.

It would be nice to figure that all of the tube lengths in headers would be the same but are they ?  In this particular case I can't see if it would make all that much of a difference. The headers have one of the largest size tubes ever made for the two liter, and go into a three inch collector.

They are almost large enough to swallow the whole engine. Had to move the passenger side motor mount to accomadate them.

Anyway, I have an Offy manifold on there now with a Holley 350 and the dyno said 161 HP @ 7000 rpm, and will play with that for a while. The Mikuni's caught my eye though and I couldn't help but purchase them hoping to squeeze a lil' more out of my 2000.

UltimatePinto,
Generally Mikunis are synced using vac. gauges that screw into little ports on the side....but I don't want to say to much till I see what you have.

Tried to post pics, but when I clicked  " Gallery Image "  I got a " Website Can Not Be Found "  message.

Will try again later.

UltimatePinto,
Yes, you have quite a set of carbs there...I don't know why but I was picturing only two of them. They are the old style, full mechanical slide carb. No vac. operated power valve. This is good. The down side is they have no accelerator pumps for that break out burst. This means that for you to get a good off the line performance then dialing in the vac. advance on the distributor will be an important ingredient in the tuneup. You are definitly going to need a set of Vac. gauges with dampers to sync. the vac. If you don't have a set then I can lone you one.
OK...The most important thing to know with individual carb to cylinder feed is that the carbs be identical...Well..Physically they are, but how about internal cleanlyness. Why??? And the only reason??? If one of those carbs is running lean compared to the others it will burn a hole right through your piston.
I don't know the history of those carbs like how they ran before or if they have been lying around for a while but if I was putting them on my car I'd want to be sure they were absolutely clean and that all the internal primary/secondary porting is correct and that the floats were the same as far as bouyency. And that is just the beginning.
I'd be happy to speak to you on the phone.
