Title: Rookie's Turbo Pinto
Post by: ctompkins31 on June 07, 2007, 08:08:26 PM
I am attempting a turbo swap. I have asked numerous ?'s in the past, accumulated lots of info, and may be able to free up the time to do some damage on my project. I worked in a bodyshop but have limited mechanical expierence. I do have some computer skills and I can follow directions. So please offer up any advice that u have. Here is my Orange Pinto Cruzin Wagon. Next to my 88' TC. In between the 2, on the picker is my rebuilt 2.3t minus the harness.

So far I have sprayed the engine compartment w/ POR 15. My friend powder coated the suspension parts. New Rack, new bushings, installed Granada rotors, GM calipers, and the best brake hoses that I could find. I later read a post that called for hoses from a 1980's s10 blazer. I believe mine a too long. Pictures attached.

A better picture of the TC. At least the important part. And the rebuilt.

Oil pan, and pick-up are swapped. Water pump, hoses, plugs, wires, timing belt go on tomorrow. Move the heater motor back, remove the turbo for now. I would like to have the engine in by the end of the weekend. I put posts in General help. Please give me your advice here or there.

Sounds like things are going good for you...

I just acquired an IHI/Warner turbo from what I believe to be a Merkur from the part numbers.  I think I'm looking at a 'low boost' draw-thru setup on my stock '79 2.3l.  I guess that if I blow something, it will kick-start me on the 347 stroker!

I also just received the adapter plates for the Granada/GM brake upgrade.  Now I have to plan on the 'new' rear and tranny.

Engine in. How do I mount the trans? Specifically. What could I use as a spacer/gasket so I may move the heater blower back?

What tranny are you using?

I have seen some talk about moving the heater box, but I don't know how it could be done to keep everything lined up. My opinion is it can't be done REASONABLY: in other words, too much time and effort when there are other ways to deal with it.

BTW: If you leave the I/C there without a BIG duct (like Curtis H. has), you will get less power, and/or hurt your engine.

Thanx for the link. I'll get with him a bit later, but I think I'm looking for dirt cheap right now!!  I'm sort-of getting things ready...

Ram clutches has a hydraulic release bearing for a T-5. Could I use this to retain the TC set-up. I already threw out my Pinto trans bell for the cable pull.
