Title: new engine in an old car
Post by: waldo786 on June 04, 2007, 09:07:05 PM
So I'm curious about story I'll relate.  I understand that in F-body Camaro's and mustangs, the front wheel drive version of the 3800 engine 6 cylinder, which is the same use as in other GM cars, can be taken out of the front wheel drive cars and adapted by switching the intake manifold around for use in the rear wheel drive cars.  What would have to be done to adapt a front wheel drive motor to work in a rear wheel drive application like this.  I guess what I'm saying is what would have to be done to swap in a newer fuel injected 4 cylinder from say a focus to the old school rear wheel drive platform?

This is some interesting information, thank you!  Still a bit confused though, if I take an engine from a front wheel drive vehicle and want to use it in a rearwheel drive application such as a pinto or bobcat, what needs to be done?  I see I could use one of those adapters if I have the right engine/trans combo they are made for.

You will need all the fuel injection wiring and PCM computer, because it will have to be fuel injected. It would be best to have a complete doner parts car until you get it running, that way you will have all the parts you need for the conversion. Plus you will have to create motor mount brackets, if some one does not make a kit for the engine that you select.

Not to mention you may need to alter the oil pan and pickup (I have not paid much attention to what a zetec looks like underneath to notice) in order to clear the crossmember.
