Title: EFI in a pinto?
Post by: waldo786 on May 22, 2007, 10:59:27 AM
I'm curious if anyone out there has put EFI in their pinto.  Will set ups from later model engine's work, and if yes what cars/years will work (for the 4 or the 6)?  I could always get one made from the components.  Also is there much info o aftermarket on how to get more power out of the 4 or 6 cylinders naturally aspirated?  Were these the same engines in the mustangs for a while?  Thanks!

The 2.3 EFI turbo is a popular swap. The engine generally comes from a thunderbird turbocoupe or merkur XR4Ti.
You could swap in a naturally aspirated 2.3 EFI out of a mustang.
The wiring is not too bad and you will need to run the EFI fuel pump and lines.

Thanks for all the good info.  I do have another question though, if I don't want to have a turbo, will later heads from the 2.3L and or intake with efi fit on the block?  Could I do a conversion that way?

Yes, the EFI intake will bolt to the N/A engine that is in a Pinto IF you drill and tap one mount hole. Keep in mind that you will need to make a few modifications to the car as well.

Thanks for the all the info again.  When you say modifications, are you referring to the computer, sensors, etc. or other modifications?  It might be simplest to do a throttle body injection swap.  How good are these heads and intake for flowing?  I know it's just a 4 banger, but I like the reliability and drivability of FI.  Is there any kind of aftermarket out there for these engines?  I'm looking at a '77 hatchback with a 4 banger 4 speed.

Answers in order:
1) Yes, and some cutting and drilling to the car.
2) From what?
3) Not very.
4) Yes.

Almost anything you do will require you to do custom fabrication/modification somewhere (IE: Where do you plan to put the fuel pump? how are you going to make the hood close? Where are you going to mount the ECU? How are you going to install the 02S? How are you going to connect the fuel lines? There are hundreds more.)

With enough time and money, anything is do-able. You need to look at your goals, and decide what direction to go.
