Title: Shifting boot replacment...
Post by: dave1987 on May 21, 2007, 03:01:44 AM
The shifting boot on my 4-speed sedan is tearing badly. I was wondering if there might be another model car I might be able to pull one off of that will fit the 78 Sedan. All the pinto's I've seen in the wrecking yards have missing transmissions, and the ones that do still have the trannies in are missing the shifting boots! I'm guessing they're popular items....

You can use one from an early 80s Ford Escort.  I also pulled the shifter knob when I did my 78, and IMHO it is a lot more comfortable than the old round 'light bulb' that came stock on the Pinto.

Do the 80s escorts use ribbed rubber boots or leather sleeve boots like the the pintos originally came with? I'm working on restoring the car, so a leather one is a must.

Dave, where are you located with Pintos still in the wrecking yard?  Please do tell, a road trip might be in order.

I'm in Boise Idaho, but the wrecking yards I go to are in Nampa and Caldwell. The Caldwell one has two 74 hatchbacks stacked, and the one in Nampa has a 74 wagon and an 80 sedan. I've yet to find any other yards here with Pintos in them. The one in Nampa is called Jalopy Jungle and they've always had at least one Pinto in their yard at all times.

The one I grabbed looked just like the fake "stitched-leather" style that was stock on my 78.  I am not sure of the exact year so it may have been an early 81 model.
