Title: Oil pan removal
Post by: CHEAPRACER on April 10, 2004, 10:43:10 PM
Can it be done with the engine in the car? It looks like I may have to remove the steering rack and it may come right out.
I didn't find out about the different sized rear main caps of the later engine until it was too late and installed an earlier pan on a late model engine with no sealer or pan modification. Now I have mucho oil leaky. Thanks.
 I forgot to mention it's a '74 with a 2.3

Never done it, but did a 2.8 V6 once. Never again!

Just remove the two bolts for the rack and the steering shaft, then push it down out of the way. I cant picture the room in there, but you can always loosen the motor mounts and raise the engine up with a jack on the crank pulley. Better steam clean it first though.

I removed it about 2 days after the original post. Very simple, drop the rack, remove the starter, and it almost falls out. I also used new original cork side rails with nothing but silicon on the ends, let it dry for 2 days and no more leaks. The late model blocks use a 1 piece rubber gasket that is pushed out easily using the earlier Pinto pan and the early model gaskets won't work on a newer block. I found this out the hard way after seeing lots of smoke out the rear.
