I don't know if this question has been answered before, sorry if it has.
I am trying to find a pair of coil springs for my 73 1.6 runabout, because the coil springs fitted are from another model.
The problem is that I have only found 74 and up coil springs in online stores.
The question is if the 74 coil springs fit the 73 suspension.
thank you
The 74 spring will not fit the 73 without cutting a couple coils off. The springs have the same diameter but have different free lengths. The 71-73 spring free length is about 9-3/8" while the 74-80 spring free length is about 13-1/8" based on the used springs I have. Racer Walsh sells mini stock racing springs for both the early and late model Pintos but I have not tried them www.racerwalsh.com.
I'm not sure about spring lengths but I'm almost 100% positive I've installed an older 71 spring from a 1.6 Kent into my formerly owned '74 with a 2.3 and the only difference I remember was the physical diameter of the metal used for the spring. It was a totally gutted car and I needed to loose about 2-3" in height and this combo worked perfect.
At this moment the car is fitted with a pair of cut ford cortina springs, with very bad results.
I recently bought some new bushings and shocks, but I am afraid that without the correct springs they will wear out very soon if I put them on.
I have made a post here asking for a pair of springs, and also in ebay.
Does anyone know the specifications of the 73 coil spring? If I knew tecnhical info maybe I could find here something similar.
Is there any store that sells aftermarket springs that could fit my suspension?
Any advice welcomed, thank you.
try to find a store that caters to the auto repair trade NOT the retail trade . try MOOG they may be able to find what you need. most big companies have interchange tables as well as complete spring specification tables that include wire diameter, load ratings, free and compressed lenghts as well as inside and outside diameters and the type of end finish on the springs as well
