Title: Manual Tranny??
Post by: drive80pinto on April 27, 2007, 06:11:23 PM
Allright well i think i am going to dump the V8 idea, although i really wanted to go along with it i think it will take to much time and im looking to getting my pinto runing early summer. Im going to put the Inline 4cyl back in but i still want to convert to a 4 or 5 speed manual so i can at least have some fun driving my pinto around. Im looking for a fun good on gas comuter car for work this summer. The problem is i can't find a tranny anywhere. I have looked on ebay on all online but can't find anything, I know i need a 4 or 5 speed from a cyl car like the mustangs, would the trannys from the ranger fit? they look alittle big to me. I have looked at one junk yard and they didnt have what i need. Anyone have a tranny lying around or know where i should look? I hoping to get one soon so i can start my project. I live in New York

What is your goal?

Do you want a "bolt in" tranny? If so, you need a 4spd and bell from a Pinto.

A 5spd (T-5) will need either a hard to find D9 or D5 (Mustang II) bell or the crossmember to be notched and will need to have the shifter hole moved forward and a different driveshaft.

I do know that the Ranger 5spds are NOT T-5s, I THINK they all have a hyd. clutch, but that is about it.

Im looking for somthing that will be easy for me to get and a 5speed would be nice just as long as the transformation isnt going to be to tuff. would the ranger 5 speeds even fit?

I have two of them I will never use.

Define "fit"

As mentioned the t-5 does not "fit" in a Pinto without work; I would doubt the ranger one would be different.

Sell: Yes

Ship: No

Start checking with all the yards in your area, you are bound to find one near you.

I have looked around and havent found anything yet, If we were to work out a deal with one of your transmissions i would pick i up you wouldn't have to ship it.
Are they in good shape? If they need alittle work like a rebuild kit that wouldn't be a problem. How much would you ask for one of them?

Change that to "It will fit into a Pinto" with a little work. Where's that positive thinking Bill. ;D

Yes, you are right.

Also change to: I might use those trannies one day, AND there is a slight possiblity that the Ranger tranny is the same.

Thank you,
Bill

none of the ranger manual transmissions (there were 4 of them, and thats just the 2wd versions) will work in a pinto as the shifter is too far forward.  we're talking under the dash forward.

There is a thread in another part of this site w/ tons of info on 5 speed swaps. I won't repeat it here, but 4 cyl Mustangs in the late '80s had a 5 speed available. I believe the Ranger would be ALMOST impossible to fit in a Pinto.

Drive80Pinto,
What's not fun about an automatic transmission??? Just put that trans back in there and get that car running so you can make one of next years regional meets. I am not putting down standard transmissions but there is allot of leg work involved.

i swapped out an automatic in my mom's pinto back in 1973 and put in the german 4 spd.  it wasn't hard but it also wasn't really necessary!  automatics can be made to work just as good as any manal and probably better.  one of the most kick-a$$ times i ever had was with a 1972  with an auto, skinny stock tires and a twisty road here in whittier, ca.  the thing was always and almost rolling over on its side but it was the most predictably handling cars i have ever driven. ut in a lot of steering , shift the thing manually and scrub the rubber right off the tires but it never missed a beat and surprised a LOT of people on that particular road.

I have both a T-9 and an AOD that I'd sell if you're that compelled to swap.
