Title: I feel Stupid
Post by: FCANON on April 26, 2007, 03:07:54 PM
After all these years of working on 2.3Ls I have taken my wife's wagon apart to replace the intake and the exhaust manifolds. I pulled the water hoses and pipes to cleans paint and replace. after that I forgot how the hard line from the intake to the heater core is routed...arrrggggghhhhh.

Does anyone have pics or a description.
I might be missing a piece since I only have two hard lines.

Thanks
Frank

What year car Frank? If it makes any difference. I can get info on my 74, 76 or 79 for you.

It'd cost you $30.00  :)

Dave
PS. Inside joke....

OK...this is a 76..it shouldn't make a defence in the years.
instead of 30 how about a pic of me in a wet T-shirt?

Thanks
Frank

Unfortunately I do not have a scanner but will try to describe the routing shown in the Ford manual.  From the intake manifold elbow the water flows to the carb choke housing via a short offset hose.  From the choke housing water flows via a short straight hose, metal pipe with several bends (goes around the back of the carb and then forward and up and over the valve cover), and then a hose to the heater water valve.  The heater valve connects to the passenger side lower heater pipe via a short hose.  From the other heater pipe the water flows to the water pump via a hose, metal pipe (routed along the valve cover and bends around the cam sprocket), and then a short hose to the water pump.  The manual shows the heater water valve mounted vertically with the diaphragm up and the actuating rod down.

looks like the one that isnt making sence to me is the one that goes under the intake manifold....
U dont recall if it goes behind the head or valve cover or over...crap

The manual does not show it going under the intake manifold.  The manual shows that bent pipe leaving the carb heading rearward towards the fire wall, then along the fire wall towards the valve cover, then heading forward along the base of the valve cover (driver side), then up and over the valve cover near the carb.

Possibly the choke water housing is not aligned properly.  One nozzle should be aimed down towards the intake manifold water elbow.  The other nozzle is aimed rearward and down a little and is connected to the bent pipe described above via a short hose.

The Ford manual I have covers both the 75 and 76 years.  It is possible Ford made a change that is not reflected in my manual.

well I've been miss informed a bit on her car . its a 77.

theres no water line front the Thermostat housing to the heater core. this runs from the edge of the Water outlet on the intake manifold to the heater core. I'm not sure where the Pipe goes over the head or behind the head.... this Pipe or hard line has about 4 90 Degree bends in it.

Thanks

The 77 Ford manual is not as clear on the routing but it looks the pipe with multiple bends comes from near the front carb base heading towards the valve cover, then it bends rearward on top of intake manifold, then makes a horizontal turn towards the valve cover and heads forward near the base of the valve cover (carb side), then up and over the valve cover near the carb.  Where the pipe heads up the side of valve cover there appears to be a mounting clamp to the valve cover (diagram is not real clear on this).  The manual does not show it, but I assume there is a hose with a couple bends that connects the manifold water elbow to the start of the pipe in front of the carb base.  Seems like an unnecessarily torturous path.

The 77 appears to have an H pipe fitting ("crossover tube") before the hoses connect to the heater/control valve.  This would allow water to circulate when the heater water control valve is closed.

Of course I'm missing peices like the H pipe but heres a pic of the parts I'm trying to re install in the right location...

The diagram in my 77 Ford manual for the 2.3L Pinto does not show a pipe of this configuration.  The manuals do not always match up 100% and there are often mid year changes.  Not knowing the size and just speculating, I would try the placing the pipe over the valve cover as shown in your picture as if looking from the front of the car and completing the connections with hoses.

Maybe somebody who actually has this model could help.

Did you say it is an A/C car?

If so, sorry I have no clue.
