All the wires in my mustang donnor car are chewed to hell or fried and are a complete mess. I wanted to know what are all the wires i need to have the motor running again. btw its carbed not efi. thanks
Well, in any basic carbed motor there are three electronics subsystems: Ignition, Starting, Charging. Since these subsystems intermingle, it can sometimes be difficult to tell them apart.
Charging: Alternator/Voltage regulator
Starting: Starter/Solenoid
Ignition: Ignition module/Coil
If your car is the same vintage as the motor, then it should match up to the Pinto harnesses. They use the same alternator, voltage regulator, ignition module, and solenoid as a early V8 fox mustang, and I am pretty sure they can use the same coil. The plug/connector off the dizzy to the module is exactly the same in my '78 Pinto (2.3), my '69 F100 (390 with '76 electronic ignition),and my 77 Mustang II (302), and they're all the same as my 87 Mustang (2.3)
After you have the basics, you can run things like a tach, sending units, elec. choke, etc.
thanks alot for your reply, Well my motors a 88 turned 4bar so do you think the harness would still be compatable?
Well, since the donor harness is trash, just match up the Pinto wires to the places where they would go on the V8. You may need to lengthen wires, which is okay except for the resistor wires in the Pinto harnesses (maybe someone can chime in on where those are located and what color codes...HINT, HINT) do NOT try to lengthen those wires as they are setup to be a certain length, for resistance purposes.
Electrically, the V8 and 2.3 or 2.8 should be nearly identical.
You should be able to use the Pinto harness for everything, but may need to change where the alternator wires are depending on where it mounts on the V8 in relation to where it mounted on the original Pinto motor; the length of the sending unit wires for temp and oil pressure; length of wire for the electric choke (if so equipped); and length/placement of distributor wires.
All the rest of the under-hood harness should do you just fine.
alright, thanks alot for your help apreciate it alot hope to get er going again soon. I'll let you guys know, Hope i dont run into anymore surprises!
thanks again
