Title: Frame connectors
Post by: 73pintoracer on April 04, 2004, 07:47:12 PM
Does anyone make frame connectors for a 73 Pinto. I found them for a 74 up through S+W, is there any difference. I`m new to the Pinto`s. Thanks Scot

8)i am not sure there is much if any difference, but subframe coonectors are not hard to make.
1: measure the three sides of each subframe end.
2: measure the distance between the subframe ends.
3: note any offset front to rear.
4: purchase box tubing the same size as the subframe, use .120 wall, and the proper length +2".
5: purchase four pieces of U channel that fits over the tubing and is .120 thick. you want each piece to be about 6" long.
6: this step will depend on how you want to run the tubing. you can contour the tubing to follow the floorpan, you need to make a few pie cuts and bend the tubing. you can cut the floorpan to allow the tubing to run straight. or you could go the halfa$$ed way and just run straight tubing. the first and third methods are easiest, and the second method is really only used when you are building a race only machine or when you want to minimize the amount of the subframe connectors that show.
7: if you bought your tubing 2" longer than you need, good because now, assuming you choose to contour the tubing, you get to fit the tubing between the subframes. once you have them fitted like you want, and have welded up the pie cuts, tack weld them inplace. dont forget to grind the undercoat and paint off the car in an area of about 2" from where you will be welding, and coat it with a weld through primer.
8: take your U channel and fit it inplace now to check for fit. if they fit properly you can now weld the tube to the subframes.
9: you may need to dress the welds to get the U channel to fit, then install and tack the U channel in place. if everything is still to your liking then weld the U channel inplace, and coat everything with some good quality chassis paint. when it dries hit it with some undercoat and you are done.
