When I replaced the head on my 74 wagon (2.3) i of course used a new FEL PRO intake gasket which appeared to have some kind of coating on it. I did not use gasket sealer on it. It runs ok usually but when the clutch is pushed in and i rev it up, it shakes pretty badly, atleast when its cold. I havnt checked to see if it does it when its warm. Im kind of wondering if i was supposed to use gasket sealer on that gasket or not. I cant remember if i did when I changed the intake gasket on my 76 or not. I know i completly cleaned the gasket surfaces on both the head and the intake on both cars when i changed the gasket. Just something thats been on my mind. Its probably fine but thought id ask.
Did it do that before you did this work?
Did you install a new head gasket?
Did you have the block and head milled or checked for flatness?
Did you use the correct torquing for the head bolts (TTY or "regular")?
Have you checked the comp. numbers after this work?
What do the plugs look like now?
Yes, as Fel-Pro indicates, install them dry.
Bill
I never had the car running before I did all that, I bought it non running. I was thinking the head had a problem was the reason I took it apart. It did blow no compression on #1 cylinder tho before i took it apart tho. Yes used a new head gasket (the whole set, head gasket, intake, valve cover, valve seals, cam seal, etc etc). Guess i did make that sound like i replaced only the intake gasket huh lol. oops. I cant remember if i did a compression test or not... it doesnt do it any other time tho. If it was low compression one one or two cylinders it would shake all the time kinda like a missfire. Plugs look good. I torqued the head to the specs listed in the chiltons book i had, using that torque sequence as well with a clicker type torque wrench. The head i do beleive was milled but i didnt mill the block, the block never left the car. I did take a wire wheel on a drill to it tho.
Did you re-use the head bolts? Were they 12-points?
Bill
Yes i reused the head bolts. I cleaned them up and reoiled them. I do believe they were 12 points but i dont remember exactly.
