Not sure if this has been tried or not. But I found someone selling a '94 Taurus SHO for $500 fully complete. It's got the 220hp Yamaha V8. They are FWD but apparently the tranny from the late 80's Astrovan will bolt up.
Would be neat in a Pinto, although alot of work.
I was looking into that swap with my 73.
The SHOpony swap would ROCK in my honest opinion.
HIGH revving NA power in a light package.
With computer mods I have seen SHOs hitting 9000 rpm without breaking a sweat.

IIRC The bottom end is still the Cologne V6. So installation wouldn't be all that difficult. Chopping up the Taurus harness on the other hand... ;)
Now wha I'd wanna see is the '97-up SHO V8 in a Pinto ala SHOgun...that'd be hotness!
I can't remember seeing a single bad preformance report on the SHO engine. I think that swap would be excellant. Sho-Gun!!!!!!!

The SHO v6 and v8 have nothing in common with the cologne series of engines. I have read that they basicly used a yamaha-enginered valvetrain and pistons on a bored-out 3.0 block, but I'm not sure about that either.
The one thing I DO know is that they share the same bellhousing bolt pattern and flywheel as a 3.0 (rwd or fwd) so any trans you find behind a 3.0 will bolt up to a SHO engine. Sadly, for RWD that limits your choices to only (as far as pintos go) an A4ld automatic, which will need to be built up to handle a SHO and will still be iffy as they're weak transmissions.
There were 2 manual transmissions put behind a 3.0, and thats a toyo-kogyo 5 speed from an 87 aerostar, or a Mazda M5od from later 3.0 aerostars and 91 + Rangers. Also the Mazda B series trucks with the 3.0. However, none of these transmissions will work in a pinto as the shifter is about 11" forward of the stock pinto shifter.
But there is hope if you have the money. The 87 aerostar trans is the only one that has a removable bellhousing, so if you can get that bellhousing (good luck) then you can get an adapter made to use it with a t5. But your luck will be slim as they were only made for 1 year and the majority of aerostars are automatics, so they're as rare as hen's teeth.

Well either that or you could get the engine side of a 3.0 bell (stick or auto, as long as it's the right pattern) welded onto a T-5 bell. You would just need to make sure the alignment is correct or you'll be changing out your crank bushing/bearing every other week.
