Title: What am I?
Post by: CHEAPRACER on April 05, 2007, 11:11:10 PM
OK guys, last Saturday my Pinto was parked on a different side of my house, due to some concrete work being done, making it more visable to people driving by. A guy came while I was gone and asked who the Pinto belonged to and if he could talk to me. He was told that I would be back in a few and left. About an hour later he came back and walked me out to the street where the car was sitting and wanted to look at the engine and interior which I thought he was going to be just another courios neighbor that wandered if my car had a v-8 in it. After talking for about 5 minutes the guy straight-out asked if I would take 5k cash right now for my car, I said "no it's not for sale". The guy paused and said what about 6k, my mouth about fell to the ground. I politely told the guy that even if I was to sell it that 6k was too much and it's not worth that much. Well he finally gave up and explained to me where he lives if I change my mind.
My car is not spotless, it has the original paint that shines good in pictures but needs help in person and I'm not even close to finishing it yet. so did I make a mistake?

Hello CHEAPRACER,
Well you have to ask yourself??/
If you do not want to sell??
Can you re-build what you have for 6000.00???
How much do you think you have spent on your Pinto??
Most likely alot more than 6000 BUCKS I bet!!!!!

The only "mistake" you made was telling him it was not worth 6K.

If he (anyone) was willing to pay that, and IF you agreed to sell it for that #, THAT is what it was worth (it's market value).

The fact that you did not sell it gives the indication that it is worth MORE.

Bill

BTW: You can have him email me after Carlisle, he can buy my V8 Pinto.

I think you should park it in your garage.

CheapRacer,
Something is only worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it. And unlike most cars that were ever built the Pinto is a car that just about everybody had or had experienced somehow during it's operatinal life. (A good example could be found on youtube>>>Search chutemobile>>>and watch the whole thing). You did make a mistake by saying it is not worth that much. Probably a polite trigger mechanism on your part to turn him away. I suggest that you add to your poll "How many people own Pinto's for investment purposes"?. I don't currently but I may if the right car comes along for the right price.

ThunderPinto is part of who I am. It is my creative canvas,my escape from reality and my fortress of solitude. I wouldn't be selling a car..I'd be selling ThunderPinto. Not in this lifetime.

OH YA!!!!!  Get it in the garage.

Maybe he was casing the joint for a future theft. Or going to write a bad check to you. If you will part with it for $6000 I will send you a check for $10,000, you return to me $4000 and ......  You've heard I'm sure.

I'm pretty sure he wasn't a scammer, he was pretty knowledgeable about cars and gave my a list of ones he's owned and just sold. He just wanted a Pinto or Vega in great shape to start another project and he told me where he lives.

As far as the mistake in price, I feel it's not worth 6k because to me it still has flaws, issues etc. but you're right, if thats what it's worth to him, then thats what it's worth. My point was to him that it's not for sale but that was alot of money.

My garage is now taken and the Pinto kicked to the curb. It was stored there but with the increased amount of play toys (quad, bikes, waverunner) we just ran out of room. A locking car cover is on my Christmas list.

My Pinto cost nowhere near that to build only because of the wheeling and dealing with parts. Both the donor Turbocoupe and Pinto cost under 500.00 and between making and fabricating the parts myself and parting out the Turbocoupe, I saved money...but then again I got extremely lucky with my purchases but my time spent in this project is another subject.

I've had several different muscle cars starting at the age of 19 and I've loved them all but eventually sold them regretting it later. Thats what I tried to avoid this time. I only chose a Pinto due to it's lightweight, affordability, uniqueness, and I can stick a turbocharged 2.3 right in and suprise people that it's not a v-8 but my heart belongs to my old '71 Cuda but have you seen the prices on those things lately? I'll stick to my Pinto.
