Title: Speedometer cables
Post by: douglasskemp on March 11, 2007, 01:34:58 AM
Ok, so I will be making a trip back to Tucson, sometime in late spring to swap the 87 Mustang for my brother's 69 F100.  I am thinking about towing the red 78 sedan back out here as well.  The 78 is about as plain Jane as they get.  Standard interior, no A/C, 2.3/4spd, and the least amount of chrome I have ever seen on a Pinto.  If it weren't for the bumpers, it would have no "chromies" on it at all.  If I do bring it here, I will also be bringing the T-5 and 8" that I have been planning to put in it since before I went into the service.  I will be bringing the driveshaft from the T-5 donor Mustang, as well as a bell-crank style bell-housing and it's associated items.  What I have noticed is that nobody has said whether or not the stock Pinto speedometer cable will work in the T-5.  Now I know it would be easy to just look and see, but I don't have that luxury.  When I take this trip, it will only be a week.  Two days there, a couple days to do DMV stuff and pack, then two days back.  What I am trying to do is compile a list of things I need to make sure I grab while I am there.  If I need to grab the Mustang speedo cable, should I grab the extra MII driveshaft I have, is there anything I may have over looked?

Fox driveshaft
Bell-housing
Flywheel
Clutch & PP
8" diff
T-5 trans
Red bucket seats
MII center console
14" AR wheels+BFG tires
Front sway bar
sport steering wheel

I think that's about it.  Thanks!

Not all fox Mustang driveshafts are the same length:

I have looked at a bunch of them, and they are different lengths depending on the engine/tranny. The best I can tell you is that what I used worked, and the V8 ones seem to be the same length. I have a MII V6/c4/8" driveshaft, it is about the same length as a M/T 6.75" Pinto one (too long).

The pre-87 Mustang ones have the correct yoke size, the later ones take bigger u-joints and the Pinto ones won't fit.

Also, beware the front yoke. The C3 yokes have the same splines and will fit a C4 or T-5, BUT they have a smaller OD.

Thanks for the quick responses TIGGER & 77turbopinto.

I searched for "speedometer cable" and not "speedo cable", so that explains why I didn't find it in my searches.

On the dshaft, the TF thread was a tad confusing.  It sounded like if you use a 4cyl dshaft, all should be well since they had the tiny Uj in the rear.  The fox shaft I have is out of the same car I got the motor and trans out of.  2.3EFI, T-5, 7.5" rear.  It has the correct fwd slip yoke for the T-5 and made a good seal since it didn't dump ATF until I had the thing dangling in the air, and slid it out (that was a fun blonde moment!)  I understand about taking the flange off of the rear Uj, since OBVIOUSLY it will not fit the 8" yoke.  It appears to me that this is one of those typical 'gray' areas of engine/tranny swapping.  I will just have to break out the rule when I get to my Dad's place.  If the rear Uj doesn't fit the 8",  I am going to go ahead and bring both the fox shaft I have and the one I have out of a V8/C4/8" MII.  Worse comes to worse I have them splice the ends together at the correct length.  Can't be any tougher than swapping a three-on-the-tree for a NV4500 5spd in my dad's old Chevy pickup.

Thanks again!

In the TF thread I mentioned that I used an 84 2.3 GT Turbo for a T-5. It is a different length than others, but it seems to be the same as the 5.0 one.

I belive the tranny will be in the same location in all Mustang IIs, so that shaft should be the same as the one I have from the V6 (too long).

No gray at all. Just measure the driveshaft, you will need about 45.5" on center of the joints for the T-5 to 8". Also get a Pinto u-joint and see if it the same WITDTH at the caps. If so you are all set.

What year is your fox d-shaft from? That will tell you about the u-joint.
