Title: HY35 Holset in Pinto
Post by: uncleamin on February 24, 2007, 03:20:49 PM
Hey guys I've been doing a lot of research on what turbo to put on my pinto and I'm still up in the air. I was planning on just going with a T-3 but I would like to do some upgrades in the future.  I was reading that the holsets are very dependable turbos and can take a lot of boost. I know that there is a big issue about having enough room...major mods and all that...but from what I have been reading the HY35 would be the best fit for my car(a 79' sedan with A/C). Who all is using this turbo on their pinto?...and what exactly am I up against regarding mods to fit it in there? I have found bits and pieces of info on turboford and here but nothing in detail. Does anyone have the skinny on the HY35? Thanks. - Amin

A T3/T4 hybrid seems to be an allaround favorite for street/strip use. You can get them in a lot of different trims and a few A/R sizes.

Thanks for the replies....I guess the reason I was thinking of going with the HY is b/c I've heard they are built like tanks and they leave room for a lot of growth with your setup. I was told though, that I needed to get the one that has the front facing outlet as oposed to the one that comes off the side. Is this true? If so why? Thanks again. - Amin

I've got a HY35 in my wagon.  When I first did my engine swap (years ago now) it had the IHI on it and I had to beat the wheelwell down a little.  Good thing I did because my Holset fits great!   Don't have any up date pics on my cardomain, but they are coming soon.   A little bit about my set-up.  I used a 2002 Holset that doesn't have the front facing outlet.  I reclocked my housing so the outlet faces down and ran my intercooler pipes down.  Looks and worked out great!!!  I made my own 3" down pipe and I used a stock T3 wastegate actuator.  With the compressor housing clocked the way it is, there was no room to use the stock wastegate actuator.  But that's ok, I'll just turn up the boost controller! ;D
