I have a mini stock that has a 4 speed manual pinto transmission but I have no idea what it came out of. I want to find the gear ratios of this tranny. Is there anyway I can do that?thanx. wnk.
Is there a tag on the trans? If not, you could count the teeth and calculate it.
I have the same issue, I race at several different tracks. One track is a 1/4 and my transmission works great, however when I race on a 3/8 track I have to use 3rd gear and get smoked on the straight away because my third gear is too high.
I need to stock gear ratio for a transmission that came in a 2300cc. I heard that Ford made two different transmissions for the Pinto and I would like to know because I am tired of the VW and Honda's smoking me on the 3/8 track, when they are on a 1/4 track I smoke them.
I also heard that you can change the gears in the rear-end to compensate, but I have no idea what to put in.
Please someone help the Pinto racers
I am 99% positive that you have the following gear ratios:
1st - 3.98
2nd - 2.14
3rd - 1.42
4th - 1.00
Reverse - 3.99
You will find that this transmission works great on a 1/4 with a 8 rear end, but on a larger track it doesn't. I am trying to find out what transmission to use on a 3/8.
what is the calculation? Can someone break it down for me?
Thanks

Thanks to this site I finally found out what type of transmission I have as well as my rear end.
It looks like I have a second gear of 1.97 and 3:40 7.25 rear end.
This is what I did to find out why gears I had in my transmission:
Since I already had my motor is was easy.
1. I lifted the rear end and placed it on jacks
2. I put the car in second gear
3. I marked the shaft with nail polish on both shafts (front and rear)
4. I turned the drive line once, and had someone else in front count how many complete turns the front shaft turned.
I did this for every gear, but I was only concerned with second gear because that is what I use while racing.
I was trying to figure how to get a longer second gear, before I went out and purchased a new transmission I need to find out what I had.
Now that I know my second gear is 1.97 and I will replace the transmission when I race on the out of town track that has a 3/8 track to 2.14.
1.97 with 3:40 rear end works great for a 1/4 mile track, and I have heard from several pinto racers that on a 3/8 track 2.14 second gear and a 3:40 rear end work great.
I would like to thank William from Arkansas, great advice.
