Title: Pony Carb Rebuild......
Post by: TIGGER on January 21, 2007, 11:15:11 PM
So I installed my Pony Carb rebuild this weekend.  I must say I am not pleased this time.  The carb does not run right.  I can't get it to idle properly after I push the clutch in while coming to a stop.  It either dies or idles higher than it should.  It also seems to hesitate slightly at mid throttle.  It ran better before I sent it to them :-\.  The only thing wrong with it was that it was so cold blooded.  I had to warm the car up real good or it would hesitate and stumble.  Once it was warm it ran perfect.  On a warm and hot days it would run fine as well.  I sent Pony Carbs an email asking them to call me.  I will see what they say.

My dad comes on Wednesday, I think I will put the other carb I have on tomorrow so it can drive it without problem.  The other carb was a NOS one I bought off Ebay but it is for a 80 so it is different and difficult to adjust because it had all the emission plugs in it covering the mixture screw.  I have to use an allen wrench to adjust the idle mixture.  It too has a problem, something wrong with the float as it dies when you come to a stop on a down hill.  Because of the float thing, and the fact that I have to use an allen wrench to adjust the idle mixture,  I decided to send the old carb out for a rebuild.

Well... this doesn't sound good... I'm interested in hearing the end result.

Even under the best of circumstances problems can arise and I'm still interested in a Pony Carb rebuild.

Not to say anything bad about Pony carbs but it seem they tell alot of people the carbs they have have issue they have over come. I personaly think its a sales tactic.. But I do know alot of people that have had good results with their product.

I rebuild my own. and the holley/webber is a trick carb to use, I have tuned all mine. its not as easy to understand as a larger holley but there are weber books to help understand how they work, well worth the investment.

I rank this carb as the Stronberg of the 70's and 80's.  So much so that I'm putting two of them on a 3.3L inline six and I have one on my 1960 falcon with a custom built adapter.

Just my 2 cents.

Thanks Frank, Pony carbs rebuilt my Mustang carb and they did a great job on it.  It was tons better when I got it back.  In the early 90's, I rebuilt the original carb (not this one) a couple, three times and never got it to work properly.  Everytime it would fix something, but there would be something else that would go bad on it.  I think the carb has something internally wrong it it.  I was a poor college student at the time so a brand new carb was not an option.  Out of frustration, I ended up in a all you can carry(with two hands) for $25 u-pull it one weekend (I wish that place was still around).  I found a nice 79 4spd squire wagon that was t-boned.  The carb looked pretty good so I pulled it amongst about 4 sport steering wheels with centers and a bunch of other small parts.  I used the rear window from the wagon to carry it all up.  $25 and I was out the door.  The carb went on my wagon and worked just fine.  After a while it started getting cold blooded but I lived with it till now.   I never wanted to mess with it for fear of having the same problems again.  Other than being cold blooded, it still ran nicely.  Now I almost wish I never sent it down there as I am unsure if it will ever be the same :'(

So this afternoon, after we got back from the Dr's office, I pulled the Pony Carb off to swap it for the other one.  When I was swapping stuff over, I noticed that one of the vacuum plugs was cracked.  You could only see the crack when it was installed.  In your hand, the plug looked fine.  I decided to replace the plug and put the Pony carb back on to see if that was the problem.  Sure enough, that solved the dying and messed up idle.  The carb runs tons better but it is not perfect.  Still no return call from Pony carbs ::)  I will give them a call tomorrow and see what they say.

The carb was still not doing good so I pulled it off and put the other one back on.  All my problems went away.  I spoke with a tech at Pony Carbs.  I explained to him the problems I was having. He was asking a lot of good questions but I could tell that he was trying hard to find something wrong with my car.  It was not till I told him that I switch carbs and all my problems went away did he say to send the carb back to him.  Needless to say, the carb is going back to them on Monday.  I am curious to see what they come back with.
