Title: draining old gas?!?!
Post by: jimskatr103 on January 18, 2007, 01:32:14 AM
I've been trying to drain ten year old gas out of a v6 bobcat (76) I bought for a $100.  I have tried syphoning through the tank and through the fuel line that goes to the carb.  How would I drain it without dropping the tank?!? thanks.

I would also like to know what transmission came on the v6 (auto)?  c3 or c4?!?!

Since have got as much as you can out by syphoning and by the pick up, I suspect you got at least 90% of it.  Pulling the tank would enable 100% removable.  Short of that, you can dilute with new gas and syphon again.  Repeat this until you are happy with the remaining gas quality.

The Ford shop manual says the auto used in the 76 Pinto 2.3 and 2.8 was the C3.

JimSkatr103,
I agree with O.K. But the one thing I would do differently is I would dilute it with E85. Ethanol would really break up that varnish. And then when you feel as though you have run enough through it then go with the E10 and that will insure a clean fuel system. But I expect that you will have to look at the carb float bowl and float too. I'd put an inline filter in it for a while so you can easily empty out the trash upon occation as well as monitor the progress.

Hello Jim,
Check your door post for the data sticker...
If in the trans. space there is a W it is a C4 if there is a V it is a C3

Sick thanks guys!!!  after syphoning and what not, the gauge still reads high level.  I'll do the E85 trick and keep syphoning!  It'll take a while, as Colorado is freakin cold right now!!  But once done with the E85, will the v6 be okay to burn that up?!

JimSskatr103,
That engine could run on e85 but you have to help it warm up on cold days. 50/50 e85 with HighTest is a good combination. Your fuel level sending unit is probably frozen from sitting and I would just syphon till you are assured that the tank strainer is clean. A good sloshing certainly is in order and best acheived while driving.
Enjoy bringing your car back to running condition.

What is HighTest?

moon shine is the highest that i know of ;D but doesnt mean it will all get to the tank if ya know what i mean

personally i would pull the tank. varnished gas tanks will be rusty inside. once you drain it all out rinse it with water several times. then grab a hand full of bolts and throw them in the tank (once its dry and remember how many you had to start) then shake the liveing h3!! out of it somehow that will losen up most all of the rust. then rinse it back out a time or to let it air dry then put it back in the car

My 73 wagon had been sitting for 10 years when I started working on it. Trust me, Pull the tank like the others said. I did and cleaned and flushed it and I run 2 of the Mr. Gasket glass fuel filters with the replacable elements in them. 1 before the fuel pump, 1 before the carb. It ran great for a while but then the more I drove it the more rust started coming out of the tank. I have to clean the first element about every 2 weeks now. and just so you know I blew out the line from the tank to the pump and tore the carb completely apart and cleaned it when I had the tank off. Hope this helps.                the Blacksheep #22

What is somehow? A simple question for JimSkatr103 is how much water came out of the tank when drained. No water.no problem. Allot of water, get a new tank. Nut and bolting a tank is allot of fun till one is flip flopping it across the lawn for a half an hour. One could encapsulate it with foam rubber and carve it to a semi-spherical shape. One could then paint both lattitudical and longitudical lines around the circumference as to be sure not to roll it around the neiborhood in the same way in order to get all the intereor in contact  with the roughage. After carving away the foam one needs only count 300 nuts and bolts hang the tank and proceed with rinsing the particulate debris out with the hose. A hair dryer would be a good choise to dry it out with for like an hour because one does not want any water in there. I would be more concerned with how much trash has collected between the top of the tank and the spare tire well or what kind of rust is going on with the tank retainer straps.
Time for another cup of HighTest coffee.
