Eeak! just got a call from the body shop. Got my motor in and running and it's blowing oil filters (they are expanding) he has tried 3 different filters (no fram) 2 - wix (napa brand) and the origional Valvoline from the old block (which I know is almost new). He's thinking nothing is plugged because he filled the motor w/oil w/valve cover off and the oil went in and saw oil flowing to the top of the motor w/the valve cover removed. (how many places would oil be coming out of that you could see w/valve cover removed? he only noticed 1 place at the rear of the motor and shut the motor down quick.)
HE want's to believe it's the oil pump (got it here http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&viewitem=&item=290009206993 ) but it sounds to me like something is ??plugged?? just not sure what it could be.
Any Ideas?
CookieBoy,
That oil should be oozing out of the holes on each cam lobe and at the cam bearings. One thing I realized with my 2.3 when I took the motor apart the first time was that the Overhead cam acts a centrifuge and spins the heavy metals (or some) out of the oil over a period of time. It is very important that the plugs be removed at each end of the cam and a stiff brush be shoved through it. Also, I took a drill bit of similar size and made sure the lobe holes and bearing holes where open. If you used a new cam then your problem is elsewhere but if it is a used cam then it should be reemed. The heavy metals can build up and be quite hard.

OK... here's what I found out so far... it's a standard Melling Pump (not hi-output) and has failed. According to tech support at Melling there is a valve stuck in the pump and it's pushing out 100+ psi and is defective. Not repairable, replacement required. Melling would have warrantied the pump and paid for the labor to have my motor pulled back apart and the replacement pump put in. However since I bought it on Ebay (not a private seller but an Ebay Store) they offered to replace the pump but would pay no labor.
I ordered a different brand from Napa... should be here in 2 Days. Mechanic will not let me order another Melling.
Hello HH,
The 2.0 cam is not hollow.
There is no oin in the cam.
From Pintony
When my Melling pump faied it was brand new and produced OVER 150 lbs of pressure.
Brad... you had a Melling do the same thing... and it was new too? Is this an indicator that Melling = crud
seller claimed that in 15 years never heard of this happening...
Yep, I wont use a melling> I know Esslingers have had probblems also.
mechanic/body guy said... NO MORE MELLING! wouldn't even consider a replacement Melling. To much work to put the motor together, install it, get it running to have to pull it back out and start all over... can't blame him. I ordered a different one from Napa (forget brand name) and if I remember to check I'll post info on brand here later. The local Napa has in the past carried Perfect Circle but they now use another brand.. just can't recall the name.
I had to change mine while the engine was in the car. Unbolt the rack and drop it, pull the pan bolts, work on the pump while the pan is still in place.................. >:(
The brand Napa (here in town) now carries and got for me was Clevite... ever heard of it? is Clevite OK?
Yes, Clevite is a good manufacture of parts.
Thanks Brad, that's what he has now so... cross fingers and hope for the best.
Clevite is a very good brand. I have used their bearings in every motor I have done over the past 15 years.
Clevite 77s baby!
