Title: Quick question: MII IFS
Post by: ADaughen on January 01, 2007, 03:03:52 PM
Anyone get one of those IFS kits out of the street rod magazines?

I need a new rack and pinion, 5-lug conversion, new front suspension... etc.  I dunno if one of these kits pretty much just lets me bolt it right up to my '78 Pinto.  I figured it might be easier to just replace the whole assembly with one of these kits.

You do not need the complete kit because the 74-80 pinto has the same crossmember as the Mustang II.
All the parts are the same so you can just replace what needs to be replaced.
Actually the Pinto had that type IFS before the Mustang II.

Hello ADaughen,
Those kits will bolt right up to your 78 Pinto suspension.
The only factor to consider is wheel choice.
You will need to run at least 15" wheels

Thanks guys.  Ohio winters haven't been kind to my '78.  The crossmember is not in the best shape.  And the choices are, either tow it somewhere to have someone patch it up, or replace it completely.

As it stands, I have a nice set of 16" Ford 5 lugs sitting in my garage.   ;D

Now the task is to find a MII kit that "fits" my ride.   :(  Mos of the kits (Heidt's or Suthern Rods) show different MII kits for different years and makes.

Hello ADaughen,
IF rust has taken over on your cross member... you should just junk the car and find a more suitable starting point.

That's not really an option I want to entertain at this time, Pintony.  :(

BTW, do you have the rear hatch off that '77 wagon?  And do you know if it would fit my '78?  Has it rusted through, around the window?

Edit:
Further review of the "kits" shows 11" disk brakes with single piston (60mm) calipers, (fits 14" wheels).

The two piston ones are more than two times that price.  And require 15" wheels...

I think I am going to need to piece my own "kit" together if I am going to do this or I'll end up with something that won't handle or stop like it should.

Hey ADaughen,
I'll have to re-check the hatches I have to make sure or you can buy a NEW hatch from me..

Well, I just re-saw 78pinto's swiss cheese cross member, and now he's doing a 383 twin turbo setup...  I think my strength issue, isn't.  I'm going to media blast it, patch any through and through and coat it in POR-15.

The ~$700 I save will go into exaust or fuel system, it looks like.

Thanks guys.

BTW, I got my sticker.  Almost forgot I ordered one.  #368.  :)

Pintony, I'm still looking for a hatch for my '78 wagon.  Please let me know if you have/find anything.
