Title: how do you tell what rear end you have?

hey every body I am trying to figure out what rear end I have. how do you tell? can you tell by the vin or what?

To figure out what rearend you have, the 6.75 rear has bolts from the rear that attach the rear cover, and an 8" has bolts from the front that hold on the center section. 

As far as gear ratio goes, the 100% accurate way is to count the teeth on the ring and pinion gears and divide the number of teeth on the ring by the number of teeth on the pinion.  The easy way to do it without removing the cover is to jack up the car, put a chalk mark on the driveshaft (lengthwise) where it'll be easy to see for you to count, put the trans in neutral, and rotate a tire while counting the number of rotations the driveshaft makes.  If it goes around 3 times for one rotation of the tire, it has 3.00 gears; 3 and a quarter turns, 3.25 gears; 3 and a half turns, 3.40 gears; or, like my 8" has, 3 and 3/4 turns, 3.73 gears.
