just got 78 pinto crusier wagon, low miles, been sitting, runs when key in start, then dies when key in run, help?
:welcome:
Try spraying a little silicone lube in the ignition key hole and around the switch lip to get some inside...sound`s like it`s a little sticky from sitting...don`t use WD-40 as it`s a dust magnet...Hope this help`s!
Might also be a bad ignition switch. Happened on my old 78 sedan.

I had the same problem with my 73 hatchback earlier this year. It ended up being the switch on top of the steering column near the pedals. If you drop the column you will see it. There is a metal rod that connects to the key. When you turn the key, the rod moves down and engages the switch that sends power to the appropriate place.
Another 1-UP for Tigger... ;D
Do what Tigger suggests.

Try also the ignition control module first, can get one for $20 and its alot easier to install. My 76 had a similar problem except it would fire after i let off the key while the engine was still spinning from residual energy. Thus it wasnt turning fast enough to start but it would spark atleast. If id left the key in run and sparked across the solenoid, or push started it, it might have started but i didnt think to try that. Anyways, its something to try. If it doesnt work, its only $20 (atleast for mine it was). Another possibility is a bad engine ground. Make sure the ground strap is connected from the throttle cable bracket to the firewall. Thats where the ground strap is at on my 76 atleast. Both the one i have now and the one i had in the past.
Hey Tig, The switch on top of the column...That IS the ignition switch.

My 78 cruising wagon did the same thing. The ignition switch is located under the dash. One must drop the steering wheel to get to it. Ya, I played the crank and let off game for a while but your car has to be really tuned well to get away with it. Pintony posted some numbers. Just change the linial switch...Done deal!
Hey...My steering wheel just happens to be dropped...heres a picture.

LOL you posted while I was typing out my response. I got the warning and chose to ignore it and post anyway because my son was crying. :sorry:
