Title: How to install 5-Lug 9"rotors on 71-73 Pinto
Post by: Pintony on December 19, 2006, 12:28:32 AM
Hello group,
PLEASE DO NOT COMMENT ON THIS SUBJECT!
I'm trying to make this a purely how to section.

Here I will take you through the way that I do the Fatmans or Heidts 9" Hot Rod brake rotor to use ford 5 on 4.5 wheels. This rotor can be purchase through any HOTROD book or on ebay.
Now many of you may feel the need to use BIG Granada rotors. My experience is that.. IF I can lock the front wheels with a smaller rotor and 50 seriese tires then I have no need for the BIG heavy brakes.
My conversion uses all the original parts "except the rotors" of course.
Here is a photo of the parts I purchased from Doc.
Photo used by permission. Thanks Doc

Hello Group,
Starting with a streetrod 5-Lug rotor that has a min. thickness of .81" you take the rotor down to the min thickness removing .090. my cutter cuts both sides at the same time and I take .010 off each side 4 times on a hurried pass to save time. the final "Finish" cut is .005 and is cut much slower to make a nice smooth surface.
Here is 1 of the .010 passes.
The leather strap cuts down on the chatter from the what would be a loud ringing sound.

After machining and removing all the metal shavings off the rotor, fit the rotor to the spindle.
Using dry bearings and no grease seal.
The reason for not using a seal at this time is because you "MAY" need to fit a few times and might damage the seal.
NOTE: The use of the stock Pinto dust shield.

Test fit the caliper bracket to the rotor this is where you may need to remove a fw thousands of material from the bracket.
This one test-fit pretty good.
So I went ahead and installed the caliper to see how everything fit.

The STOCK Pinto rotor is "wider taller thicker"? How ever you want to say it.
The street-rod rotor is aprox 5mm or 3/16 thinner so you have to pay close attention to your wheel choice.
most wheels will work w/o a spacer.
The positive side to this is you can use a bit wider wheel and it won't stick out as much.

Notice how close the rotor face is to the caliper bracket.
If need be the caliper bracket could be thinned a few thousands.
