Post by: dandyferg on February 21, 2004, 09:01:21 PM
I have a 1980 2.3 engine and wanted to add a roller cam,  However I may already have one so how can I tell the difference?   thanks

If you have a roller cam, the cam followers (rockers) will have what amounts to a wheel that rides on the cam lobe.
A non roller cam will have one piece cam followers and the cam lobe "slides" on it.
Roller cams didn't come on 2.3s from the factory until somewhere around 1990-91, I think.
edit...
I just did a little research, and it appears that 2.3 Rangers first had roller cams in 1987, and the 2.3 Mustangs first came with rollers in 1991.

Thanks for the info!!  It looks like I have a standard cam.  Do you think I would benefit more from a standard hp cam or a ranger roller cam?   thanks

A roller cam has less friction, and thus frees up HP in that way, you can also get more agressive cam lobes, IN THEORY, for the roller followers. However roller cams cost more.
