Title: Any and ALL help will be greatly appreciated.....

 :text_yb_please:

A buddy of mine has a 2001 Hyundai Accent with a 1.6l engine in his shop. the problem was the timing belt broke, and now he has no idea how to time the damn thing. We have gotten NO HELP from hyundai or any other online source, and im wondering if any of you guys know what i gotta do to get this thing outta his shop. its wasting time and precious bay space.  by the way, its a DOHC with only one cam being driven by the belt, the other cam is being driven by the primary cam with a chain mechanism, the chain didnt break, so were asuming the cams are in time with each other. however, the cams seem to be out of time with the crankshaft. any pointers or backyard redneck okie tricks will be helpfull, and graciously accepted. weve had this thing for a week now and gotta get it out! thank you.

Hello bluefordpinto,
Put the crank on TDC for the #1 cylinder and have the cam lobes pointing directly opposite the follower.
All valves for #1 cylinder should be closed.
If it has a dizzy it should also be pointing to #1 plug wire on the cap at this time.

you might also want to find out if the engine is of the 'interference' type. or not.  an interference type motor will bounce the valves off the tops of the pistons when something like this happens.  it means BIG money

those are interfeince engines... you will need to check the head and valves for damage...

I know parts for those are kind of high .... but you might have lucked out.

I had one appart that tossed the belt on the high way..it was a mess.

Best of Luck

pintony, thank you for your help, it worked, however we now have a rough idle, ran a compresion test, and found a bent valve on the #3 cylender. We find this odd because it is a non-interference motor.  :what: but anyway. thanks guys for your help. we have a new cylendar head on order, and were gettin the thing out next week. if your ever in Banning, CA be sure to let me know, and ill buy you guys a drink.
