Now I got started on the front speakers. Here's last Summer's attempt to install a couple of '80s Sanyo in there, which inspired me to change course and do something that looks more like a factory install.
Here's the install that I did today. There's a tri-axial speaker behind that Ford factory speaker grill.
Here's the other side.
Next time, I will notch the door panels to finish this off.
But, first I will find out way there's no sound coming out of the fronts. The rears work. I hope that the audio chip in the in-dash player isn't blown out again. Use more common sense than me and never buy an used in-dash player on eBay.
Did get a did get a phone call from Prestige Wheels while I was driving in my Pinto. Unfortunately in was when I was a bad reception area and the battery died....
Hey Doug,
I did not see the old speekers, BUT the new ones look GREAT!
This car never had factory door speakers. Although seeing them them in a sales brochure inspired this install. The old '80s Sanyo speakers with the plywood fillers were my first attempt at an installation. Then I took them out, cut bigger holes and installed 5x7 Lightning speakers mounted on generic looking Ford grills to mimic those old factory 4x6 (I'm guessing) speakers.
WOW and don't cutting those holes make your back side pucker a bit????
I got fiberglass. ;) I got a wire welder. :D I got temerity. ;D
Its been a while since I have seen them but I believe the factory speakers on my 79 wagon are 6". They are original and need to be replaced as well. Nice job on you install :drunk:
Turns out that my new front speakers are duds. "Infinite" ohms across the leads. Wish me luck returning them at Wally World since the box and the receipt are long AWOL.
To Pintony, next up is slicing up the door panels. This step does make me a little apprecihensive.

I thought you said you had a wire welder. ;D
Wire welders don't weld up vinyl or masonite. But I cut up the panels anyway after I got the replacement speakers.
Here's the other side. And one of the dealer brochure pictures with a factory installed speaker that inspired this thing. I'm surprized that the window crank came so close to the speaker grill in my version.
