Just to let you 2.0 guys know a new but harder way to put electronic ignition on your 2.0
The 2.3 distributer has the same length shaft and the housing is a drop in to the block. BUT the 2.3 shaft is a bigger diameter at the bottom where it protrudes from the gear so it wont fit in the lower portion of the block right where the oil pump shaft is. What can be done since the shaft is the same size where the shaft bushing in the distributer housing is the same is to cut the lower shaft from a points 2.0 distributer and weld it to the upper portion of the electronic 2.3 distributer right above the driven gear. Yes I have one and can say that with the electronic coil and the blue tab ignition box it works great. What started it was I had an 86 ranger with the factory 2.0 that gave up the ghost on me. Well after pulling the motor and not having one to go back in it I was looking at the input shaft and the bell housing sitting in the truck and lo and behold a Pinto 2.0 was a drop in to the block EXCEPT the top 2 bolts or studs as they came from the factory. I had the back-up motor from my mini-stock on the engine stand and said :wow: and went for it! Had to handmake a rear sump oilpan and custom motor mounts but went in fine. Sorry, Back to the distributer, I needed an electronic ignition so my brother-in law and his twin brother have a garage WITH Milling machines and Lathes. I took both distributers to him and he made one that worked great. Ive since junked the Ranger and went to put the motor in my "new" 73 Pinto wagon and the distributer had gotten sloppy. Last night I went over to my dads garage and did some checking and tore it down and found an 80 Pinto 2.3 distributer and put the shaft in it and its like a new one again, NO SLOP! Not sure if there is an actual wear problem or not but will keep tabs on this one to see since I never really checked it originally before I dropped it in the truck to see how sloppy it was to start with. Im not sure how much a good machine shop would charge either as I did some computer work for him as payment. Also just for the record he turned part of one shaft down and hollowed out the other one and pinned it before he tig welded it. Wiring up the box is also simple, Red to positive of coil - White to small wire on starter solenoid!
