Title: Has anyone done this? V6 Auto to 4 Spd
Post by: Cookieboystoys on October 31, 2006, 10:39:26 AM
Has anyone done this? converted a V6 Auto to 4 Spd in Pinto Wagon? I don't think Ford ever offered the Pinto V6 with a 4 spd so I wonder how hard it would be...

Here's the scoop.... 78 Pinto wagon has V6/Auto and a 76 Mustang parts car with the V6/4 spd tranny for the donor.

some questions I can think of would be...

1) would the 4 spd tranny for the 76 V6 mustang be the same as the tranny used on the 4 cyls in Pintos? I'm thinking tranny mount here and wonder if the tranny mount for a pinto would work with the 4 spd from the mustang...

2) would a different drive shaft be required? I wonder if the drive shaft would have to be changed due to size of the 4 spd vs. Auto and what would I need to get one from if needed... possibly a drive shaft from a pinto wagon w/4 spd?

I'm sure there are more questions I need to ask but this is a start...

no ,the trans in the mustang II is called an srad.and it is not the same as the pinto trans.if my memory serves me correctly the srad uses the same trans mount as a c4,    2.i dont remember if i had to shorten the drive shaft or not. been many years since i did the swap. i have thought about doing swap again.

if it uses the same mount as the C4 then I could use the exsisting mount but then have to wonder is spacing the same and if it would all line right up.

if it did then drive shaft should be fine.

Ford made different length shafts. I was able to find the length I needed when I did my swap. I posted a link to t/f with driveshaft lengths here somewhere.

Thanks Bill, but was kind of wanting someone who had done this swap to give more specific info on mounting the manual tranny and give more insight on their experience... such as tranny mount needed and does length change requiring different or modified drive shaft.

Hey Brian
If my memory serves me correctly the mustang has a longer input shaft than the pinto so the bellhousing is deeper making the overall lengh greater.I was considering the swap some years back and it looked like more than I wanted to deal with at the time.I'll look through my books and see what I can find out.

Thanks Doc, there has to be a reason no one does this swap

I had to also cut a small half-moon shaped piece out of the tunnel for shifter cleaance.  The shifter is really close to e-brake handle too.  To make installation easier, install the removeable bellhousing FIRST then put trans in.  You may also have to clearance the tunnel "nicely" with hammer, to make room for clutch linkage.  You can also use wiring from the M2 for the reverse lights.  You can change just the pedals and not the entire assembly too.  Many different mounts can be used, it's best to just install it and then match one up.  I can't remember the driveshaft length, I will try to measure the one I have and post it later. If I think of anything else I will post it.  I'm fixing to make mine a 4 speed again, it just is not as much fun with the c4 plus it is slipping. It really is not a hard swap, seeing as you have a donor car. I can do mine in less than an afternoon.

Thanks, perhaps I'll just wait to see how yours turns out. It would be next summer before I could even consider it as the parts car will be hard to get to during the winter. I am interested in doing this to mine... just depends on what all will have to be done and how hard it is to do.

I like 4 spds  ;D

Not a hard swap. I have done 2 of them.  Easily done in an afternoon if you can obtain a parts car.  We didn't have the correct drive shaft, so I cut one down.
