New to the whole Pinto seen but I like it none the less. Stock 77 pinto runabout, I think the carburetor throws to much fuel in, cause I can barely make a 30 mile run on a 1/4 of a tank. Is this normal for the Motocraft Carb.? I don't have any manuals on how to fix the problem (if there is a problem at all with the carb.)
Thanks a bunch guys...
Long live Pintos!
Nick
It sounds like you are getting aroung 10 mpg. My gut instinct tells me that is not normal. My Pinto got around 27 mpg on the highway @55mph when I first bought it in '86 and it was bone stock.
Two things I would do:
1. Replace the float in the carburetor. It is rather common for them to "sink" due to the float becoming saturated with gas. While you are in there, you might as well change the needle and seat too.
2. Check your ignition timing.
There are many other things that can contribute to poor mileage. How you drive, gear ratio, tire pressure, general engine condition, etc.
I thought I was having carb trouble too, till I came out of a grocery store to find a sizeable puddle of fuel under my car. Turns out i had a fuel line dry rotted at the tank. This allowed fuel to siphon out while it was sitting still.
hey guys.. thanks again for the info... I got another question though... the advance plate for the distributor? If I flip it so the limiter is in the long notch will I get a better advance curve and an easier start? Cause right now it takes way to long to start.
Will it work in my 77 if I flip it?
Thanks again guys
Nick
oh and I completely forgot one other thing.... what does the advance plate look like?
