Title: Pinto fever strikes again!
Post by: pinnoman on October 11, 2006, 08:58:39 PM
Hey All,
New to this Forum and looking forward to talking to other Pinto guys.
You all know who you are.  Never seems to be enough of us!!!

My love of the Pinto goes back to when my Dad and Uncle raced a '74 pinto that was turbocharged. this was back in '75  when I was only 11 years old. I really didn't like the early body styles back then, until the last four years of model production, 1977-1980. these are the best looking ones in regards to front end styling. In 1979-80 my dad and uncle ( the racing guys) started a propane conversion on a '79 hatchback sedan that my dad owned and eventually was handed down to me. This was my first car that I got see the odometer roll over to 00000 (100,000) miles. I also had a '77 pinto wagon that my parents bought for me while I was in High School. Unfortunately, both the '77 & the '79 had some severe body rust that prevented me from doing any major bodywork as for a complete restoration. My major in college was autobody repair, and I wanted to learn how to R&R rear quarters and everythiing else, including custom paint and high performance mechanics. Now, nearly 30 yrs. later, I am catching PINTO FEVER again. However, in respect to the families who have had tragedy dealing with these cars, my condolences to them, I still feel the cars are safe as I have not had any life threatening problems. My fever comes from a car my uncle did back in '78 after he and my dad were done racing in '76. My uncle purchased a brand new '78 pinto hacthback sedan, drove it for a couple of thousand miles, and put it in his garage for two years. Nearly thirty years later, he still has the car,but it has only 12,200 original miles on the odometer, and was converted to propane for a short time, but also has a garret air-research turbo,an intercooler, a 5-speed transmission, ( from a Chevy Monza, as Ford did not have a real 5-speed back in '78 when this project was underway). The interior is all stock with the addition of guages for monitoring the engine. The body is all stock, with 14"s in the rear, and 13"s in the front, and a chin spoiler under the front bumper. This car is absolutely beautiful to look at.
