Sorry, just realized I probably should have posted to the the General Help area, not the FAQ area. I tried to remove it from here, but site wouldn't let me. Hope you'll excuse the newbie :-\
Okay, Here's the deal... I just bought my son his first car, a '79 Pinto Hatchback. It had been in storage (so I was told) for about 13 years, but had recently been used. So, I am assuming all fluids had been changed prior to our purchase. Over the weekend I changed the spark plugs (gapped at .034), wires, distributor(?), and rotor, plus flushed the radiator (lots of rusty water) til the water ran clear, added a coolant overflow jug. But, while I was wandering my way around the engine area, I found two hoses attached to stuff at one end but left hanging at the other end. I don't know where or to what these hoses should be attached to.
The first pic is a hose attached to a T-shaped thing underneath the air filter. This hose points directly toward the front of the car right now.
The second pic is a hose attached to an F-shaped thing, just to the left of the distributor(?) mentioned above. There is another hose attached to this and the other end attaches to something about 3 - 4 inches below the air filter.
Can anybody tell me where these hoses to nowhere belong?
Please pardon my ignorance, I'm just a city-fied woman who generally lets the local mechanic do everything outside of oil changes and pumping gas. But, this car is kind of a project car for my son and I. BTW, we did order the Haynes repair manual for this and hopefully I won't be irritating you all with my stupid questions. Any help though will be greatly appreciated.
on the second pic .that f looking part is the postive crankcase ventilation valve. also called the pcv valve.the smaller hose on this part goes back to the carbon canister under the driverside fender.i hate to ask is your car a federal smog car or a california smog car.
No, my car has lived it's whole life in Michigan. No smog/emissions criteria that I'm aware of, but why did you hate to ask? What should I be concerned about?
Here's a different view of Hose 1 in question. This is facing the air filter from driver's side of the car. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.
is there a vacuum diagram decal on the hood or anywhere under the hood? it might help witht the routing and may help in figuring out if parts are missing
