Title: 75 MPG wagon with cranky right wiper
Post by: AaronHendrix on September 17, 2006, 03:14:30 AM
My wife dearly loves her 75 wagon, traded a 91 Infiniti G20 for it, but I had no idea how much fun it would be to find parts.  The last older car I had was a 70 VW Fastback and parts were everywhere.  On to the problem.....  Recently during a rainy day (imagine that, rain in Oregon!) the right wiper suddenly stopped working, then started again, not in sync with the left one.  It seems to me that either something snapped or worked its way loose because now the right wiper moves slightly when the wipers are turned on and is prone to smashing into the left wiper at times, ruining both blades.  Has anyone had this problem?  If so would you be kind enough to offer some advice?  Aside from that issue and a slight misfire, the car is in amazing condition, with an interior that looks like it just rolled out of the showroom.  Thank you for any help..

The wiper posts do have a history of having the little tab on the bottom break off (where the push rod mounts to the shaft under the dash). I have removed them and re-welded them on a few cars. Not a fun job. The only other thing it could be is the shaft where the wiper arm attaches might be srtipped or a damaged arm

Thanks for the reply 77turbopinto.  Is it difficult to get to the wipers under the dash?  I am even open to the idea of removing the passenger wiper altogether for the moment, but the rainy season is about to start and if I can not find a replacement or remove the existing wiper, then the car is driveway art except for dry days.  On a lighter note, I just read the classifieds on this site and if I had joined all of 4 weeks earlier we would be listed as owning two wagons now.  I can't believe I missed the chance to buy the $350 one that was in Washington.  Oh well, better that the addiction not get fed just yet.   ;)  Sudden thought..... did the shafts change over the years or did they remain the same?  The junkyard near me has a pinto, but it is a later model then mine, not sure just what year, but it has square headlights.  I'm wondering if it might be a doner car for that part?  Also, how do you disconnect the wiper arm from the shaft?  Thanks again!

That is the side that seems to go (both are about the same, but I have only repaired the right. Yes, it is a pain to get under there, if you have a/c it is even worse.

If you plan to fix it yourself, or at least remove and replace it, take the time and pull the front seats, center console, radio, guages (drop the steering colum down a bit for the guages), glove box door/box, and maybe a few other things. You MIGHT be able to leave a few of these item in, but they are easy to remove and give you more room to work.

Remove wiper arms: lift the arm at the hinge point an insert a drill bit through the little hole so it comes out the other side then gently lift the arm off. If the mount comes out with it.... well you know for sure whats wrong. Each pivit has three mount screws, be sure to seal them up well when you re-install them, as well as a good amount of sealer around the flange.

I was able to carefully weld the little tabs/arms back on. Be careful of too mucch heat as they have a little foam/rubber disc to keep them from making noise.

I do not know what years will interchange, sorry, but I do have a NOS assy. in a box with the part # E0FZ-17566-A. It came with one of my cars that had this issue, but like the others, I just fixed the one that was on it. Sorry, not for sale.

Here is what the thing looks like:

I had one break on my 80 pass side.We were able to climb under the dash with a wire feed and weld it back on not a fun job but it is doable after removing the glove box,it also helps if you are a contortionist

Bill:

Thanks for the info, you really gave me a better idea of what I'm getting into.  At least I can remove the right wiper for now so the car can be driven.

Earthquake:

After the speedo and a radio install on a 70 VW Fastback, tracing a wiring short under the dash on an 88 Accord, a clutch cable on an 88 Subaru, and enough behind the dash work on a 91 Infiniti to make me swear off Nissan forever I have become adept at working in the head down feet over the back of the seat position (That sounded really bad!)

Wish me luck

It is really bad, zoops big time, but it was better than removing it.I only had to stand on my head for a minute or two instead of 20 to 30 minutes to R n R it.Either way,NO FUN.

OK, the wiper arm and blade have been removed.  The small round toothed piece that the arm attatches to is still on the car and it can be rotated 360 degrees which I assume is not it's intended arc of travel.  I am going to leave it be for now, it's raining again and as I just got a suprise bonus check we are leaving tomorrow for a week of travel along the Oregon coast.... I may salvage a bit of my vacation yet!  See you in a week..

Keep in mind that if the arm is dissconnected and you use the wipers, the arm might damage things under the dash. If it were my car I would rain-x it and leave the wiper(s) off.

Sorry, been a while since I kept up.  It's not the arm under the dash that I removed, it's the wiper arm outside the car.  The "knuckle" for want of a better term, that it connects to had stripped.  The Mrs seems to be content driving it that way for now.  I may wait for drier weather before attempting anything under the dash.  When we were in an apartment I had convered parking, but was not allowed to work on the cars.  Now I own a house, but have no garage, only a driveway.  Go figure.....

Hey Aaron, I have a wiper arm & motor set out of a 77 Mustang II, but I am guessing (?) the wiper attaching point (the part with the splines that sticks up through the cowl) might be the same.  Can you get a photo of the part that is bad?  I will go out tomorrow and look around and see where it is and get a photo of it on here.

I didn't make it home until after dark tonight, but I'll try to get a pic or two of it in the next couple of days.

No problem...as you can tell I didn't make it out today.  It decided to snow in Tucson today, so I decided rummaging around in the trunk of my car was not the best thing to do, so I will check tomorrow...weather permitting of course.

Heres the answer to your problems!
Just take out the heater core box and ac if it has it, only way to get to it.
Figure on the whole day to do it if its sunny and bright.
Also while your at it might just pull the wiper motor and get a NOS one on ebay as well.
Good luck
