Title: Dash Pad Replacement
Post by: dale the pinto man on September 16, 2006, 10:02:59 AM
I removed my old Dash Pad, The original one was all cracked and part of it cracked of.  I would like to know if I can buy the plastic cap to fit over the metal dash, and if that won't work were do I find an original pad replacement. I've looked at several companies offering the plastic cap. Has anyone bought the plastic cap and placed it over the metal dash, and if so how does it look. I live in Arizona and the heat just takes its toll on interior parts. Anybody have any ideas?
Thanks in advance

I put a cap over my old dash pad and It's a good fit. I don't think it would work to well on the metal without the pad. (just my opinion) I would look in the parts section of this forum or try e-bay. things are always showing up there. I also just noticed a post in general pinto talk 77pintocw just had his redone at just dashes. the post gives the address and website.
Good luck with it
Joe

I recovered the dash out of my Ralley using a good grade of vinyl and some real good spray glue.It took about 2 hrs. to get it done.

Thanks for the reply pintoman. You said you used a vinyl, did you use that over your old Dash Pad or did you place the vinyl over the metal surface? The reason I am asking is because i removed the old Dash Pad, I'm thinking the plastic mat that can be purchased has to go over the original Dash Mat. I think I will go ahead and buy the plastic mat and maybe build up the metal dash with foam so the plastic mat will conform. what do you think?
Thanks for your interest.

I trimmed all of the cracks on the pad. Then i filled in all of those cracks with some of that expanding foam used for filling cracks in walls.I cut off the extra and then sanded the pad smooth. With that done I took some 1/8th inch foam and glued it down. Then I glued the vinyl down, using a heat gun to make the vinyl pliable so I could rap the edges.

I have an aftermarket plastic dash cap on mine and people would swear it was stock. It's a great fit and looks really nice. the old pad is still there with the cap on top. I am not sure where it came from but whoever put it in did a good job

Thanks Pintoman, Jpinto72 and 78squirewagon for your replies, I do appreciate them. Before I became a member of the Pinto Cafe,I removed my old dash pad and chucked it, thinking that I could take care of the dash problem down the road. I know now that I should have kept it. Well live and learn I guess. Thanks for the interest I will let you all know how I solve my dash delima.
