Hey all, has anyone converted an automatic car to a 4 spd? I have all the parts, I am just concerned about tailshaft differences. Does the four speed shifter come through the floor in the same location as the auto? I can't reall afford to go out and buy new carpet to make this swap work,so I need to know if the locations are the same. Please help. Any info would be appreciated. >:)
I'm 95% sure that they'll use the same hole. The auto is more flexible so I think they'd put it in the 4spd hole.
Yes, you can even use the same trans mount.
Hey dyceman; The other guys were right. There is even a hole for the clutch cable. Changing the pedals are easy also.
Good luck
I did the swap in a 76 wagon. Wasnt that hard.
Youll have fun. ;)
;D I think I'm goin' for it. The original 2.3 will be coming out in the next week or so, with the other going in in it's place. The four speed will probably be going in with it. I saved all the cables, mounts, pedals,etc....... I figured out that after driving around in a automatic full size van all the time, I need the manual in the Peel. Thanks for all the input. John
Four speed is in. Runs hard. Only problem I had was the brake pedal. The donor car had power brakes, mine has manual. Different pivot point for the pedal. Had to bust out the die grinder and modify the stock pedal to match the manual pedal. Git-r-done.
John
Cool
I think it took about 2 months to break a diff. after swapping in the 4 speed. :-\ I grabbed the rear from my donar and threw it in. They worked together better anyways. My 76 was an auto wagon, the donar was a 74 Runabout 4 speed.
BTW, I had 3 friends with me when the diff. broke. After they got out I was able to limp the car home. The friends that would ride with me knew there was always a chance they might have to walk or help me push one of my cars home. They were the die hard friends. ;) ;D
